The Four-Track November Music Challenge
Hello everyone. This discussion started in Fruitbat1919's thread here.
https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/62893/how-i-finally-started-finishing-tracks/p1
I have a new forum music production challenge idea for November. The challenge is to produce a piece of music that contains only four tracks (or less if you wish). This is similar to the Korg LE challenge, except this time the challenge is app-agnostic.
So, one track can be a drum machine, another track a synth, another track being your voice, and so on and so forth. If you wish to use four MIDI-driven synth tracks in something like Gadget or NS2 or Drambo, you can do that. Or if you wish to use three synth tracks and one voice track, that'll work too. Or if you want to record yourself playing four instruments on four tracks, go for it! But the idea is to only use a maximum of four tracks.
(There are two exceptions to the 4-track rule. The first is you may use a fifth track if you plan to vocode your voice as a carrier with some sort of modulator. The second exception is if you plan to use AUM, a fifth track is allowed to load in MIDI plugins such as Atom Piano Roll 2, any of the Bud apps, etc.)
Each of the four tracks can have unlimited effects plugins. Once you complete the track, please do upload it somewhere so we can take a listen. Also, be sure to take a screenshot to prove you only used four (or less) tracks and post it with your submission. (The exception is if you plan to make a Youtube video instead.) The hard deadline is November 30th, so up to the end of next month.
Also, once you finish your four-track piece of music, you can then render the unmastered version and use any app to polish it up and make it ready for release.
Best of luck and happy producing! I look forward to what you'll do. Any questions? Feel free to ask below.

Cheers for making this thread and taking the time to write this throughly @jwmmakerofmusic - stoked on this!
Hmmmm, 4 Koalas? moohoohawhaw!
Nice try. 😂 It doesn't work quite like that.
@jwmmakerofmusic can I use one track for one percussion app as I am one track for my drums? So basically:
Track 1: Drums (one app).
Track 2: percussion (one app).
Track 3: Synth (one app).
Track 4: Bass (one app).
No overdubbing on any tracks just the one app recorded at a time.
Sounds fun. I think I’ll give this a go, since I’ve been doing mostly 4 track stuff lately using Midi Tape Recorder, which only has 4 tracks and doesn’t do overdub.
That's perfectly legit.
Sounds good mate.
Can we use shift+Lift > shift+Drop on the Op1F
Lmao what a nerdy geeky TE gear head joke
Sounds like a fun challenge
Heh! Technically you could, but I think one "instrument" per track is more the spirit of the challenge. One instrument could be a bass, a synth, a drumset, etc.
Fun. No master bus allowed then?
Would a SessionBand track be allowed if just using one instrument from it, like the drum beat, and not all the other instruments?
Great idea @jwmmakerofmusic!
I've been in a music production creative block for the past 3+ months. This is what I needed.
Are we limited to iOS apps or can we use hardware too? I'm thinking the SH-4d would be perfect for this challenge.
Patterning with kit swapping... mooohoohawhaw 2!
If you want to get out of a creative rut quicker, try the option you wouldn't normally choose.
Master buss is allowed, lol. I just meant "four instrument tracks". We can have a master bus to polish our tracks.
That would count as one track, absolutely.
So long as you only use one instrument per track, you most certainly can record hardware, but one hardware instrument per track. Or two software instruments vs two hardware instruments.
Again, nice try bud, lol.
Definitely good advice in general.
Foiled agin! Ok, so how many drum kit sounds?
One drum kit per track. If you want to make all four tracks percussive, that's definitely your choice.
I decided to do this challenge in Gadget. I'm using Otorii on one of the tracks for my drums.
Give yourself a respectful challenge. Ns2
Gadget is so…what’s the word, passe lmao
Right, but what is a drum kit is my question. How many hits?
LOL! Then again, NS2 is too easy. :P Gadget requires a bit more "imagination".
You know what though? I just realised something...I forgot to add rules about mastering.
Here is the addendum - once you finish your four-track piece of music, you can then render the unmastered version and use any app to polish it up and make it ready for release. Best of luck, mates.
I'd say...maybe 12-16 drum pads.
So 16 pads in BM3 ok?
Sure.
Individual Fx per pad...?
Man, I am so unfamiliar with BM3, lol. I'd say...treat the 16 pads as you would a hardware sampler drum machine like SP-404, KO-II, etc.
Hmmmm, will have to look into those and restrain myself appropriately then.
(BM3 is awesome, especially on modern ipads!)
I may have to revisit it then on my iPad Mini.
Nice one @jwmmakerofmusic 👍
Thanks mate.
Great recommendation. I like the idea of mixing 2 hardware synths with a software synth and software drums. I haven’t done that before so should be fun.
