Yeah definitely the sort of thing I would use to build a track upon
Well go on, then 😅
Ok, I will have something ready for my January SOTMC entry as I’ve done November and Decembers!
Everyone did such intricate submissions with great arrangement and standout leads. Definitely giving me some GAS with these apps I’m seeing what everyone is capable of making. I went with a pretty simple loop and practiced my writing since I’ve been listening to Lupe Fiasco recently and wanting to get back into rapping again. So technically just three instrumental tracks lol.
4 track challenge
🙏
so... like how creative can we be with the "drums"... i mean, any kind of sample can go on a pad... ...must be some kind of parameters there... length?
Not really a limit on length. One track can be just drums only. Although a limit of no more than 16 is probably a good limit.
But like, one could drop a cat meow on a dum pad... so are you saying just conventional drum sounds? What about little fx bursts/crunchies... zaps n boiyoinoings? Slide whistle or dj scratch stab thingy?
I’m of the opinion that anything that makes a noise can be a drum sound. But, to add to your question: what about trigger loops loaded into a “drum machine”. I could easily have 16 of those and still record onto one of the 4 tracks. In the good ol’ days they were recording entire bands to 4 tracks by bouncing. So, is it that you can record anything you want as long as you keep it within four recorded tracks? or are you only allowed to use 4 different instruments on 4 tracks? It all gets rather confusing. In fact I think I just confused myself….
4 tracks man , like open interpretation but fairly simple I think
Each track should be mainly on single instrument or dedicated to live performance or vocal /samples
Does that serve your workflows?
My workflow is varied at the best…so, yes it does…😎
Yah I assume the spirit of the thing is four different instruments, but a lot of drum kits often have sfx too. Personally I would draw the line at full on loops on drum pads for this exercise, particularly melodic ones.
Yep. I agree with the loops bit. I don’t think sfx should be ruled out if it’s in the spirit of this game and if they’re part of the drum kit. They’re just percussive elements like any other drum sound.
This sounds reasonable.
Two things:
Here's another one. I'll be back to listen to others' entries.
This is awesome - what did you use?
Tracking and rough arranging was Drambo. The drums were Sitala, but the other 3 tracks were Drambo devices. Vocals were recorded in Ableton then dumped into Drambo Sampler for sequencing.
There's some really inventive stuff that's been posted. Thanks for coming up with the challenge @jwmmakerofmusic
@Fruitbat1919. This tune had a great groove. Very much a live feel. The bass was awesome. Really cool contrast between the drums/bass and ethereal synth sound. Dang, the tempo change! Nice one.
@JWMMakerofMusic. I like the vibe of this tune. Had an epic feel to it. Nice groove. And nice synth lead noodling. That bass is nice and thick sounding :-)
@Dav. This is was a really pleasant listen. It reminds me a lot of the kinds of stuff they used to play on WNUA in Chicago in the 90s. Spent many a night listening to tunes like this as I was studying.
@yellow_eyez. That bass is so deep! Really dig the African percussion. The contrast between the acoustic percussion and glitched out sounds is really interesting. Cool little journey you take the listener on. Oh dang, that part at 2:30 is crazy. :-)
@GeoTony. I really like this. Great moody, somber vibe. Damn GeoShred is expressive.
@KirbyMumbo. This is cool. Dig the rap and the backing tracks. The synth chords reminded me of Weather Report in heavy weather days. The busy drum part added a nice contrast to the vox and synth.
This sounds like fun.
I’ll listen to all the jams you have posted and try to get one done here in a couple days!
@ecamburn Thank you so kindly, my friend. I actually didn't suggest the four track challenge originally. I just simply came up with the guidelines and such.
I still need to catch up on listening to everyone's works. 😅 Last two nights of sleep were rough.
I apologise for being unable to give decent constructive thoughts on your piece as my brain simply refuses to comprehend rapping . I tried, but it is my failure, so sorry. Glad you posted as I love that we have such variety of musical tastes here and I've commented as I do want to encourage people to post their music even if it's not to my taste
What can I say - summed up the challenge in style! Reminded me in the later parts of one of the Halloween theme tunes. Seemed a simple piece yet so effective, well constructed and entertaining. Thanks for sharing.

This is a very improvised attempt. I will do a 2nd take more arranged, and maybe 2 more tracks because I fucking love this idea of 4 track challenge. I was obsessed with this idea but not recording anything because comments as "Oh, too raw.... u need more production, better sounds, more structure", etc...
So thanks for this idea. Can we do it monthly or something? haha
Like it a lot!
Must it be done on an iPad, or are my computer and Zoom R4 ok to use?
Whatever is used, it must remain as four tracks. Recording it into an iPad would be ideal, but in keeping with the spirit of being "app agnostic", being "device agnostic" isn't so strange. Just make sure to take a screenshot. Cheers and good luck.
I’m afraid I’m with @Fruitbat1919 about rapping but I know that’s my problem 😊
Enjoyed @ecamburn ’s warnings about using 5 and not 4… very nice 👌
Musically @raimundoarriagada did it for me, excellent track 🙏
All great tracks given the restrictions !
4 tracks, 4 minutes, 4/4

Happy November everybody. I enjoyed your track, @jwmmakerofmusic. Your uptempo music was an inspiration for this. I’m gonna listen to the others. Thank you!
Here’s what I did to my 4 track challenge by adding tracks through to 15! Lol completely off topic.
