Thanks for the response. I’ll keep on open mind about future development, and being locked to musical time does make it appealing.
I think it's pretty cool and quite different from others, even the close "cousin" Bounce by Cem O. I did/do miss a few things especially when using one instance to several targets/synths but when I tried to formulate what, and even come up with some suggestions, I came up empty.
I was lazy and replaced it with Zoa in an older project using four targets so maybe I thought I could do as in Zoa, you can't🤣
I do appreciate the presets you've included, they tell quite a bit of the potential of the app, good work there..
Thanks! I'm glad to hear the presets were helpful, too...it can be hard to tell after using the app for quite a long time now.
Yes, it's a bit of a different workflow compared to something like Zoa's 4-part setup. It's possible to configure something similar with Mass, using MIDI channels, but nothing exactly like Zoa.
Black Friday sale? Cyber Monday sale?
how would you say it compares to bouncebud?
Not yet, playa bounce bud is though!
Hi, thanks for the interest. No sale this year.
Thanks for the question! They are very different. In BounceBud, note values are determined by the walls, and notes are played based on the position that a ball hits them or by MIDI input.
In Mass, Parts (the circles on the screen) all contain their own individual Euclidian sequence. The position of the Part is what determines the note, rather than the point of collision with a wall. This means you can play sequences without even activating the physics system, and allows polyrhythmic multi-part sequences that are locked to musical time. Parts can also output CC in addition to notes, as well as some internal events that affect your composition instead of sending MIDI. Sending CC can be done continuously, as a Part moves, or sporadically based on either the Euclidian sequence or collisions with walls and other Parts. Likewise, you can enable the note output on collision with walls or other Parts if you want to replicate something closer to BounceBud.
Mass is very deep, and capable of very complex patterns and modulations that can be related to musical time, or completely random and driven only by physics. That is the user's choice.
If you want to see a bit of this comparison live, checkout @Gavinski's video. He touches on this briefly.

@tom_ward
What an awesome response. you sir have made a sale and Fan.
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
Thanks for the reply, just purchased, very nicely done! Easy to use, with interesting results.
Thanks, that means a lot!
Yeh, me too! Thanks @tom_ward ! Can't wait to get into it!
Hey @tom_ward I have noticed that sometimes the menu opening and closing affects the output (i.e scale I think). This is a bit odd as I think a menu should be a dead item.
Also, an issue Gav raised and retracted was having marking on the parts. I think it would be good to have some sort of distinction (optional) between parts, instead of having to flip through the menu to get the one your interested in selected. When you have many balls in the air (ha!) there's no good overview on what is what - this is especially true if you get back to an older* project. When you're setting up a bunch of Parts for LFO service, (so cool!) it would be great to maybe see some data.
I mean, it's not super important but I think it would be beneficial. What do you think?
*yeah, I know it's a new app and an old project is max two weeks but I'm old🙃
Agreed. Maybe only while the menu is visible, we could have numbers shown?
Also, could we get a copy/paste between parts?
Wow, awesome, thank you!
Thanks for the feedback @Pxlhg and @Edward_Alexander!
Visual ID on the parts is something I went back and forth on a bit during development. Really the only marker that would fit on the part itself is the numerical ID. I think that'd make sense to have an option for that, so users can decide which they like better, with or without. In terms of when it should show, do you agree with the "only while the menu is visible" @Pxlhg, or are you looking for something that shows when the editor is closed also? I could see it being useful both ways, just trying to figure out the best way to support this through settings.
@Pxlhg The menu should definitely have no effect on output at all. If you have a specific composition/preset that this happens with, feel free to email it to me and I will check it out. If not, feel free to email (or reply here if easier) any other details so I can look into that. There's a contact button in the settings panel that will email me directly.
@Edward_Alexander yes, copy/paste is up pretty high on my features backlog right now. I'm currently in a triaging phase to understand if there are bugs to patch before getting back into feature work. I have this specific item split into two parts:
The first step will come in a minor release, probably fairly soon. The more expansive copy/paste logic is something I'm working through, and it will come in a larger release. In the meantime, happy to hear thoughts about how copy/paste can best support peoples' workflows!
I'll see if I can find the one I noted it on but it's not just one, it takes a half step sometimes, it's quite noticeable.
I'm not sure how much I will use it as an CC pattern thingy, but since it can do awesome stuff no LFO ever can it's very intriguing and thus I want more control, knowing what is what with a quick overview when going back and forth between apps... and so on. How this is concepted and coded -- I have no clue. Sorry! I have some ideas but can't express them in a sensible way, more like embryos maybe, if I think of something good I'll surely let you know.
When this happens, is it a half step on all parts, or just one/few? I have a hunch about what that is...will start testing some theories over here to see if there's a bug there I can fix. Thanks for bringing that to my attention!
Ah yes, the balance between control and spending all day operating the controls is a tough one haha. I also use the app as a modulator a lot, and I have some experimental changes here that I feel are useful for that specific case. For example, allowing the "info flags" (the little text flags that come up when you drag a part) to show at all times. This works really well for modulation because it's easy to identify a part by the CC it is sending. Many of these things will make their way into the app, and in some cases are already done and working but have performance or other issues to address first.
@tom_ward I was just thinking that an easy way to help with a part visual ID might be to allow editing the part name at the header of each part panel. (Where it says “Part 1” etc.) We can already swipe left and right through the parts easily enough.
Also, that “Duplicate part” function sounds great! (Really all we’d need over copy/paste)
Thanks for this thought! Yes, that would be a nice touch, the ability to rename parts. I'm going to put some thought into that.
Just want to commend @tom_ward for his activity and communication here it’s noteworthy.
There's not that much crossover tbh. The list of shared features would be small. If you already know how Bouncebud works, you'd see even within a few minutes of watching my vid on Mass that it's really a very different app. > @Uprightmusic said:
It really is 👍👍👍
Thank you! It's always kind of scary to put something out there that someone can easily provide criticism of, same with sharing music and other forms of art. I try to avoid (as best I can) assuming that I know all the answers, even to my own app. For me that allows critique and suggestions to seem more collaborative and enjoyable...and I think that enables me to want to come back and respond to things.
Took a punt on Mass last night. Glad I did, it’s wonderful.
@tom_ward i saved my project, and created a new folder, but neither of those things appear to be there this morning. Hope I haven’t lost everything I did last night!
Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying it!
You should still be able to load the autosave file in that kind of event. I'm curious about the missing file, though. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I'm going to look into that tomorrow, and will probably reach out with some questions.
Cool, thanks Tom. Have a good weekend mate
Revisited Mass today after watching a few videos decided to add it to my collection of midi generators and it’s definitely unlike any other the others I own once you get past the initial use phase. It’s pretty deep and intriguing once you dive in. Feeding it into the likes of Chordjam then out to AU instruments can hit of some magical results.
I for one hope the app takes on more appeal and continues to be developed as the dev sees fit. Looking forward to the ride.
Thanks, I really appreciate that!
I needed a couple weeks off. In the meantime I've been considering all the feedback, and what is sticking out to me the most when I use Mass myself. Development will resume very soon.
I just pushed a new tutorial on the physics system:
This is the last planned video in this series. I'll be moving on to more tips, tricks, and patch-from-scratch type content from here. Let me know if there's any specific areas or use cases you'd like to see!
