A New Chapter for Older & Retired AudioKit Apps
Hey everyone,
I wanted to take a moment to share some context about why some of our older apps have been sold. I know this might come as a surprise to some of you—it’s been bittersweet for me, too.
The truth is, this wasn’t entirely up to me. Those early projects were created by a team of incredible people, and as time went on, most of the original team moved on to other things. Rather than letting those tools slowly fade away, we decided together that it was better to pass them on to people who could give them the love and care they deserve.
The good news is, they’re in good hands now. Space Mushrooms, the company that took over many of these apps, has a strong history with open-source projects. They’ve promised to keep the apps updated and, most importantly, not charge existing users again. That commitment really matters to me, to the original devs, and to the legacy of those tools.
At the same time, I’ve fought hard to keep all our newer apps under AudioKit’s roof—even when it hurt my wallet—because I know how much you rely on them. I’m fully committed to continuing to support and improve these apps like NERD Synth, King of Digital, King of FM, King of Bass, SAGA Synth, and more for all of you. AudioKit as an organization is staying focused on its bigger mission: building free, open-source tools for coders, musicians, and creators around the world.
Outside of AudioKit, I’ve been spending a lot of my energy on something I’m really passionate about—teaching. I’ve been an associate professor at IU Indy’s Music Tech program, and it’s been so rewarding to help shape the next generation of music creators and technologists. Kids here in Indiana don’t always have the same opportunities as students elsewhere, so it’s been amazing to bring them experiences they might not otherwise have—like inviting absolute legends like Roger Linn to speak to them. It's opened doors they didn’t think existed. Seeing the impact on their lives has been so fulfilling, and it’s really reminded me why I love this work.
And don’t worry, I’ll still be around to work on the most recent AudioKit apps. I have updates and new features planned for Nerd, King of Digital, and others. On top of that, I’ve been quietly building something new that I’m really excited about: a free synth that I think you’re going to love. I’m not sure yet when or where it’ll launch, but I promise it’ll be something special.
Thank you all for your support and for being part of this journey. You’re the reason I keep pushing forward, and I’m so grateful for this community.

USING THE AUv3s IN YOUR DAW:
You’ll now find Digital D1, FM Player 2, Digitalism 2000, Bass 808, Retro Piano, and VHS Synth listed under “Space Mushrooms” instead of AudioKit in your DAW.
Here’s how to get them working:
Thanks for the update, Matt. Here's hoping this works out well for all parties involved. 🤞
Are they the one taking over Audiobus too? Will we hear news soon about Audiobus future ?
Appreciate the transparency, Matt! I look forward to seeing where the future takes things. Is Synth One staying with you?
I also want to say I dig your mission and am grateful for what you’ve created and given away freely (or at ridiculously low prices haha)!
Thank you! Synth One gets offers to buy it all the time, and I’ve been fighting hard to keep it. That said, I’m 1/3rd of the vote on what happens to Synth One. But, so far, so good!
And, on another positive note, I think people are going to love the new synth I’m working on even more than Synth One. It's the biggest pure synth app I've ever made. We'll see 🤞.
What stood out to me...
Good on ya mate! ❤️ This is the kind of thing I like to read about - the musical (and artistic) enrichment of today's youth. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Music Composition and Technology (as well as a basic Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music), so the program you're teaching sounds similar to that. What does the curriculum entail exactly?
That said, all the best to you Matthew. I'm looking forward to whatever synth you're currently creating.
Thanks Matthew for the clarification.
And it touches my heart to hear about your teaching experiences. It is great to see happy and creative kids. I wish you all the best with this.
And I’m curious what synth there is in the making…
Thank you, Matthew.
Cheers @AnalogMatthew - VHS was one of my first apps, and a huge part of my first creations. I really have enjoyed the latest entries of yours, NERD especially. Sending positive vibes. Appreciate you sharing this with the forum. Sending you all the positive vibes.
(Obligatory that I respond with a Twin Peaks gif whenever I see one online as I grew up a stones throw away from the area 😅)
Isn’t it possible for them to include a legacy plugin in the bundle with the old identifier si as not to break people’s project? Users having to replace their instances means losing the presets and any parameter mapping or automation that they have done.
Perhaps you could pass on to the new developer about these issues.
You’re a good guy, Matthew.
Thanks for the apps and the update.
Good thinking. The identifier is the same, but the Manufacturer ID and apple account is different. I'm not sure how to get around these issues, especially with the app groups that are silo'd by apple accounts. If there's a dev on here that knows any secret hacks to help with this, I am happy to help get this going in the apps? Thanks all!
The curriculum covers a wide array of things from recording, DAW production, engineering, instrument building led by Moldover https://g.co/kgs/YGGmHxT, VST and Coding led by the man behind Unfiltered Audio Plugins and Soundlab.ai, Marketing, performance, etc.
Additionally, I run a free series open to the public. Sometimes it's livestreamed:

As a heads up, the AR909 app is in the process of being transferred to the original developer.
Learning from everything, we're trying to keep the Manufacturer ID the same for now. Don't know if it will work or not. For those with important settings of the 909 app, now might be a good time for mixdowns or screenshots, just in case. Thanks again 🙏
Not sure if this is relevant, but I use the Simplenote app, sold and maintained by Automattic. Its bundleID is "com.codality.NotationalFlow", which may relate to the original creators. The app was created in 2008, and it has been owned by Automattic for eleven years. So it may be possible for a dev to take over an app while preserving its original identity.

Seriously, a lot of developers would have let the app vanish into non-existence. Thanks for keeping this app running, even if it’s under a different developer.
Wow! That's absolutely fascinating. I'll have to check this out. I may even pick up a few new tricks.
Hey Matt,
This got me thinking. If the developer account that the original apps is still open, would it maybe be possible to keep the old version with the old developer ID in the App Store but not listed for sale? Might be too late or not possible for several other reasons I can think of, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
Even if that could be done temporarily, it would give those that are really nettled by this the ability to back the old version up with iMazing so that it could be installed on their devices to get them around the existing projects issue.
Probably there's only a few (but rather vocal) people seriously affected by this, but I thought I'd mention it in case that's not been looked into.
Thanks for the heads up @AnalogMatthew Sounds like it was a tough decision but it’s good to hear you kept the users in mind, and the apps will continue to get some love. Cheers!
Edit - I originally put the wrong handle for Matt. Thanks to @wim for the heads up. Now it’s fixed. Cheers!
Oooh this is interesting.
I just discovered the new owners of the VHS, Retro Piano, D1, etc apps is ...
The same developer that acquired Audiobus!
Hopefully they know enough not to change the names etc., so previous presets are maintained. Very hopefully.
Hi, anyone else having no luck with Retro Piano showing up?
VHS Synth and Bass 808 show up as auv3s (under dev. Space Mushrooms) but not Retro Piano - in any host, after a delete and full reboot - the stand alone works fine just no AUV3.
Any ideas?
Had the same issue although looking today, Retro piano shows up and bass 808 has now disappeared.
Have emailed dev.
I transferred the App Groups registered with Apple for those apps to their account, to help with this. Have a call next week to help as well. Thanks everyone for your patience. There may be some teething issues, but they're committed to keeping all of these fine Audiobus and historic iOS Music apps alive.
Love the thread title - invokes images of racing greyhounds and seaside donkeys living out their final days with the love and attention they rightly deserve.
Thanks, Matthew. Fingers crossed.
Yall, How is Retro Piano?
Good lookin out @analog_matt
@ejacul337 still missing as an auv3
