Here’s my submission. Four instances of Copperhead in NanoStudio 2. So weird for me not to use any drums, but I used FAC Bandit on the bass and some arps to try to get some good movement.

What a neat piece of music! Love how you managed to get that movement going within the given restrictions. :) Well done mate.

You can really see a full band with that one one helluva release!

Hmmmm. I have zero skills in synthesis but I bought Mariana, Aparillo, Twin 3 and Volcano 3 on the Black Friday sale. Looks like a very good opportunity to learn at least one more/less deeply.

Automation of the synth and effects are allowed and encouraged.

    Does this include preset switching?

show me 1 synth on iOS capable of preset switching automation which is actually working ( i mean it can do it in realtime during playback with no latency, so it is useable like Elektron's sound locks)

From my own quests, I remember that more than one FM synth worked with instant preset switching without dropouts.
Probably because their architecture and internal routing don't change.

did you try it really in context of track, in sync with other stuff in composition ? In my experience there is always sdelay at least few hundreds of ms whych may look like “instant” when you are just switching patches and plying by hand, but in context of laying song - random delay from few tenths to few hundrends of ms is showstopper

Yes I did, my idea was to use instant preset switching for sound design like in elektron p-locks.

  • QUOKKA x 4 might not be too shabby 😁

Nice didn’t even need drums :)

Ok, really enjoyed this but i could spend a month tweaking this so.
I used korg Electribe wave in logic.
1 patch is kick (some little high notes as hat fillers later.)
2 is snare (layered up and different volumes etc) other desert cities is the main fx used here.
3 a pluck part that I mess around with cutoff, attack/decay etc
4 is a stringy pad but I again mess around with envelope to create shorter notes and longer ones throughout

Now for the big reveal. 4 tracks, 4 distinct patches, soooo how did I get a white noise downer and riser? Transit. On the kick drum track when it’s not used! Turned off and on.
Other fx of note Saturn for beefyness, fav chorus for the breakdown sparkle, a touch of pro R2,c2,q3. Might be one or two others but can’t recall.

Lots and lots of automation of volume, envelops and everything!

I’m posting this one, not because I think it works well as a track on its own, but because the method of using AUM to and steadily bringing tracks in is great for making backing tracks to expand on in Logic later. I find it works better for generating ideas than starting as a blank sheet in Logic.

That’s the great thing about these challenges, it helps us look at music making in new ways.

  • Great work by @Fruitbat1919 , @Drrabbitfoot , @jwmmakerofmusic , @peanut_gallery and @squeals 👌
Thanks Jim for arranging it 👍

Nice movement of sounds using their envelopes etc. Enjoyed :)

Agreed! A lot of great submissions here!

  • @Fruitbat1919 That was a great journey! Love that you used Trooper Synth. I keep meaning to spend more time with that one.

@squeals Great chill ambient piece. The movement and evolving synth sounds, as well as the clever inclusion of downers/risers , was a great treat.

@jwmmakerofmusic I can't believe I've never even considered Twin3. Those sounds are so lush they just carry me away. You've created a fantastic soundscape!

@dendy Hilda is another synth I don't think I've ever looked at / listened to. That was a great advertisement for what the synth is capable of. Great listen!

Finally finished my entry. Despite this being created in Nanostudio 2, my weapon of choice was Twin 3, not Obsidian. I fed the first instance of Twin 3 (the pads) into Pro-R2 to get those pads sounding lush af. The rolling bassline was originally a sustained bassline, but I evolved it into a rolling bassline by placing Flux Mini 2 on the effect rack to act as a gate.

The third instance of Twin 3 is the simple plucked lead. Nothing more to it than that, lol. Just a little PWM, and got an evolving plucked lead. Finally, the kickdrum was created with Twin 3 as well. I used FAC Transient to make the kick punchier and Doctor Vibe to make it sharper.

I mastered the track in the Nanostudio 2 project itself using Grand Finale 2, NS2's limiter to prevent anything going above -1dB, and Youlean's Loudness Meter. This piece will appear on my upcoming EP.

This is great man! Happy to see you are digging twin 3, its one of my favs. Great jam dude!

I really like this a lot. Quiet a nice, subtle, subdued piece of music. Drums are as nice and soft as they need be. I like how to came up with the kick and snare. Quite clever to use Transit for the white noise portions, lol. I didn't think to make a rule about that. (As in a way it counts as a synth, but in other ways it does not.) But now I'm thinking "I should use Transit somewhere in my next piece of music". Though I'm rather adept at creating my own transitions in NS2 on Obsidian as well as automating filters and such. Lol.

Love this. Reminds me of early Jean-Michel Jarre if he were challenged to only use four instances of a synth to create a piece of music.

That’s the great thing about these challenges, it helps us look at music making in new ways.

    I agree.

Okay, part 2 of my reply is coming. (I don't want to make one mega reply, lol.)

Thank you kindly, my friend. Twin 3 is lush, but part of what created the lushness was also Pro-R2. That is possibly the best all-rounder reverb on iOS. Though I find that Pro-R2 tends to eat up CPU on my Mini 7, so I use it judiciously (usually just on a buss).

Thank you kindly mate. :) As I said above, Twin 3 is lush! Versatile synth, and quite easily the best all-rounder subtractive on iOS. Modulation is dead-ass simple. Only caveat is I must use the Pencil to help aid me when using Twin 3 on my Mini 7.

  • Thanks for the kind words everyone. I’m back in work tomorrow, so I’ll make a point of listening to everything on my way there & way back.
@jwmmakerofmusic 🤣yes it did feel a little cheeky. I was in two minds, but I genuinely found out by accident. I’ve always used it with sound! So I did have a few moments of why is there random noise in that part? Before I thought, hang on… 😂

I did try this with atoms. It was really good, I learned a ton about the app. But I had an issue with apps being deleted for some other reason and a lot of my things went.
If I’m honest, I’m amazed there’s only 2 tracks for the parts. It’s so not how I would work, but I think it does give a commonality to the sounds.

I massively enjoyed doing this, it’s helped me in tons of ways.

one of most analog-like sounding synths on iOS .. true gem .. in my opinion Bram’s best masterpiece.

  • This has been a lot of fun @jwmmakerofmusic i had been working on one, and asked about Drambo, when that was answered, I had already moved on until @Fruitbat1919 reminded me with his last enjoyable submission that I had one on simmer

  • @squeals fantastic use of arps and Transit! Followed you looking forward to more

Definitely my favourite track of yours posted in this challenge! Lots happening and the set up looks so interesting :)

  • @Fruitbat1919 some lovely sunny squelchyness driving this. Nicely offset against the more atmospheric elements. N one.

@GeoTony lovely. You might have got me to buy geoshreds!

@dendy i’ve got a love hate relationship with Hilda. It’s fantastic, it’s definitely a me issue. I tend to work in a manner that gets immersed, forgets things, bounce down and forget to save. It’s so good it distracts me. Lovely sounds, great track. In awe of your Hilda mastery.

  • @Nighur lovely movement, beautifully uncomfortable (in a good way.)

@Drrabbitfoot very nice mix of sounds, love the faded breakdown ending… waned more!

  • @jwmmakerofmusic i love the way this develops then settles into its groove.

@peanut_gallery that went somewhere I wasn’t expecting at all! Nice work, you don’t need drums. That bass slaps!!
