I'm getting massive CPU spikes in AUM using a 2021 iPad Pro

I found the CPU OK in the several days I spent with it (check your buffer size in AUM, maybe it's very low?). I did report to the dev that my iPad runs a bit hot while using it. He acknowledged it's a heavy app, I don't know if it can be further optimized.

Cheers for the response. I tried the buffer at 128 and later 256. Disappointing experience as I really like the app otherwise.

  • I love the way this sounds, like his other apps and his Reaktor instruments! To my ears they seem so thick with complexity or something. I'm not really sure what it is I'm actually hearing in them that I think I perceive. I do wish for MPE though.

I don’t suppose anyone asked if there’sa demo for desktop? I was only able to listen mostly as doing post diner tidy up😅

I haven't found one either ... I remember trying a desktop demo for Buzz Zone, but now I can't find the demo version for that either, so maybe they're no longer offering trial versions.

That’s my memory too, maybe the trial versions were too much work to maintain with a growing product line…

  • Is 9.99$ intro pricing or regular?

Intro. Regular will be 12.99, not sure when Intro ends

  • I notice in the Store specs it states the app works on Mac (M1 and above) too - but they also sell a desktop version, that’s more expensive.

Has anyone used the iOS version on a Mac, and if so is it missing features from the desktop version?

  • @Edward_Alexander

Buzz Zone has already been my personal favorite new synth of 2024 by far, with its MASSIVE sound design potential; being able to draw the envelope on pretty much every element of the sound, and being able to SEE it!

That’s quite the endorsement, and it’s only 5,99€ atm. Really tempted

All of their synths are separate downloads/purchases and there doesn’t seem to be anything missing from the iPadOS versions compared to the desktop versions that I’ve seen so far.

Does the iPad version work as an AU plugin on desktop?

Just checking as they state the iOS app is also Mac compatible, which obviously makes it more attractive for us Mac lads.

No. They’re separate downloads. If you buy one you don’t automatically get the other.

If you go to their web site, you’ll see they are clearly separated.

For example, I bought the iPadOS version of FM Zone, but have not yet gotten the macOS version because it’s a bit more money than their prior synth release.

Thump One is free for macOS, but not for the iPad.

I haven't used it, don't use desktop currently, but it does clearly state that, so the AUv3 should indeed work on a suitable Mac inside hosts that support AUv3. If it doesn't, the Appstore description should be modified to remove any mention of Mac.

They are separate downloads. Identical look and function for the user, but if you want the desktop versions, you get them from their web site, not the App Store.

I’m not looking at a Mac at the moment, but if the iPadOS version says it’s M1 compatible, then that’s not accurate.

That’s what I thought - seems a bit weird having a more expensive single Mac version, when you can buy the Mac/iOS version for a tenner.

I need both because my projects all ultimately end up on desktop for mixing and mastering. If you don't need your projects to travel between mobile and desktop, then none of this is an issue.

  • I just checked the macOS App Store. The app description for FM Zone shows the following:

"Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS."

But you go further down in the description to the "Compatibility" section and it says, "Requires macOS 11.0 or later and a Mac with Apple M1 chip or later." That part is wrong. The iPad version of the app is in fact NOT compatible.

And the other two ToyBox Audio/David Alexander apps available on iPadOS are not even shown on the macOS App Store. So, I have to imagine this was a detail that was overlooked by the developer somehow.

No, because the AUv3 would only work in standalone hosts. But if indeed it can't do that, it shouldn't say it is Mac compatible on the Appstore. I'll shoot the dev a message about it

This is not correct actually, someone told me just now that they have been using the iPad version in Ableton, no problem

This is easy to check on the AppStore page itself, on the bottom of the page. It should be compatible for M1 Macs, but not intel.

There’s another thing here and I’m wondering if it’s the responsibility of the developer or the responsibility of Apple.

There are in fact iPadOS apps which are listed by Apple as compatible with macOS, but they are not able to be used as an Audio Unit in GarageBand or Logic Pro on desktop. They might run as a standalone app.

As far as I’m concerned, if an AUv3 runs as a standalone app on desktop, it’s not really “compatible” because it doesn’t have full function. Fully compatible, as far as I’m concerned, means it works as an AUv3 on iPadOS and as an AU on desktop. Apple’s “Compatible with…” identifier is too vague and I think that’s also where we’ve been communicating at cross purposes.

Fred Anton Corvest’s apps (most of them) do this. Same for Moog’s older synths (their newer plugins are sold as separate desktop downloads at a higher price point).

Mistake made when I extracted NeuM’s quote. Hopefully you understood that I was saying that NeuM’s claim this ipad version does not work on M1 Macs was inaccurate, as I had a direct report from someone that they had used it no problem inside Ableton

My claim was accurate for GarageBand and Logic Pro. I don’t have or use Ableton.

And as I’ve stated in greater detail above, “Compatible” isn’t the same as identical function.

You said you shot a message to the developer. Did you ask why the iPadOS version is apparently usable in Ableton on desktop, but not in GarageBand or Logic Pro on desktop?

No, I didn't have that info at the time, but this is also not my battle, so I'll let you pursue that if you want to

I'll take you at your word that the iPadOS version of FM Zone works in Ableton on desktop since I have no way to test that, however according to the email from the developer I received that would be operating in an unintentional way.

You can clearly note how the email distinguishes between iPad and macOS / Windows versions.

    • Also, is that the Mac version of Ableton or the PC version that reportedly runs the FM Zone app?

  • edited December 2024

Hi Folks, looks like there was some kind of glitch, the iOS version should only be available for iPad, on desktop the plugin is available as a VST3 and Audio Unit, for the price on the website shown above.

We just updated FM Zone to 1.0.1 this morning, changes are:

    • Fixed MIDI learn CC display
    • Fixed parameter automation in AUv3
    • Miscellaneous GUI fixes
