Motto Akemie by ALM Co. (Released on iOS)

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/motto-akemie/id6478916283

'Motto Akemie' is a 6 Voice FM drum synth and step sequencer for your iPad. Basically 6 'Akemie's Taiko' Eurorack modules in a box with a fun step sequencer.

'Motto Akemie' is a 6 Voice FM drum synth and step sequencer for your iPad.
Each voice is based on our renowned 'Akemie's Taiko' Eurorack module featuring similar controls and playful FM sounds from pure sinusoidal oscillations to mega clonks to chaotic self-feedbacking enveloped noise.

The built in multitrack step sequencer allows for quick polyrhythmic pattern creation with step modulation of all parameters, randomisation, swing and time division scaling across storable pattern banks and presets.

The iPad standalone version mirrors the desktop versions features and includes an additional ipad specific preset manager. It will also function as a AUv3 instrument plug-in. Note in AUv3 mode, only the first voice is MIDI addressable.

    Interesting!

  • Interesting development, ALM dipping a toe into the iOS waters.

I’ll have a look at that video later.

  • Definitely interesting! Do I need it? No. But I’m real happy to see these devs bring their products over to our platform.

  • I will buy this because I love ALM and their stuff. I only have a couple modules but they seem very in tune with the type of creation I enjoy.

  • Note in AUv3 mode, only the first voice is MIDI addressable.

This means that it's mainly intended to be used with the internal sequencer, right?

  • Yeah that seems wierd. I’d love to drive with other things..

My 5min review is that this is fun and immediate, with some cool capabilities. It does sound like the module. The p-locks on every parameter per step can kind of emulate CV control that the module has. It definitely needs a dark mode though!

  • Will definitely buy this in the upcoming days when I have some time to dive into it. Love what I see in the demos.

  • Ah nice, there’s a desktop demo you can download 🤘

  • So many p-locks…aka “gates”
    Irresistible

Not sure if you are being sarcastic but for each of the 6 channels the p-locks cover:
    Delay
    Random Skip
    Level
    Pan
    Start
    End
    Ratio
    Speed
    Wave
    Feedback
    Release 1
    Release 2

Not sarcastic at all…excited about the purchase

    An instant purchase-
p locks on groove boxes are unfortunately rare on iOS and a must have for me

  • so you can sync it to your host in auv3 mode right?

    Yes it syncs fine.

  • cool! thanks!

  • well, look at this. panning already integrated

  • What does it mean only the first voice is MIDI addressable

  • The sequencer is out of this world, really precious, and then .... they fuck it all up by not having midi out. Damn!

    And!

They screw things up further by only having just one drum (first) react to midi, it's not pitched either so: pretty much just a (pretty expensive) kick machine (regarding midi in).

I personally don't like the sound it makes either but I do get it's great if you are into chiptune and that kinda stuff😀

I probably refund it as I see no use for it in it's present incarnation: if that seq. gets midi out though, count me in.

This is more insightful than you might expect.

  • Is there a manual link?
Wonder why only the first drum takes midi in?

I mean I kind of get it, the module is not really meant to be a static thing, it’s meant to respond well to cv modulation, and so as just a ‘drum synth’ it’ can be underwhelming. The manipulation of the wave and other parameters is the cool part. I had a lot of fun triggering the predecessor to this module (Dinky’s Taiko) at audio rate. So I’m just going to use it standalone with heavy use of the p-locks for now (and hope they add a DARK MODE)

  • Pretty cool! It could really use undo and redo buttons imo.

    And copy paste functionality

Copy-paste and clear are built in already. Long hold on on the pattern select buttons (A-P) for the copy/paste/clear functionality.

I read the manual for the desktop version and figured that out.

On the desktop version, midi channels 1-6 will trigger voices 1-6, and the midi note will correspond to the ‘start frequency’ parameter. I hope this is added to the ios version soon.

To play the voices chromatically, turn the speed knob fully CCW. Then start-frequency will correspond to notes, and there will be no pitch shift (usually each voices shifts from start to end frequency via the speed parameter).

The desktop version also supports MTS-ESP microtuning. I don’t even know if that’s a thing on iOS.

Have you got this working on the iOS version? Long pressing doesn’t do anything for me (in AUM).

**Edited to say it works in standalone, just not in AUM.
