Humm ... who better to stage a rash of mysterious drone incursions and to make sure no one gets to the bottom of them than the authorities who just happen be in charge of such things and who just happen to need renewed funding right now?
Could it really be as simple as the old adage, "Follow the money"?
Just 60 years ago we hadn’t even managed to get a man on our moon. And 60 years later that’s still as much as we’ve achieved. 50,000 years ago - not even the blink of an eye in the life of the universe - we were living in caves and chewing on our recently expired ancestors limbs.
I think we have an exceptional over-estimation of our knowledge on what exists in the universe, and how others might traverse its interior.
Oh definitely. Since we don’t know, aliens could come in all types of forms. One popular theory is that the UFO’s/UAP’s themselves are actual organisms, based on their flexibility and shape changing abilities. My personal favourite is the multi-dimensional/multiverse type theory that they don’t come from space at all, and co-exist here, making appearances through ‘gaps’, also popular with a lot of ancient cultures and religions. Could explain why they don’t engage - maybe they can’t actually see us.
This is where our limited scientific and knowledge of current engineering potential gets in the way. Maybe in 50,000 years time we’ll have cracked it. Maybe they appear via dimensional cracks in the fabric of space, or maybe instead of using rocket fuel, they use time itself.
I guess why I said I wouldn’t put aliens last is that after discounting aircraft, drones, hallucinations, the planet Venus, ball lightning, gaseous balls etc. ….what’s actually left?

I can think of a few things, but nobody here would feel they were any more probable. And perhaps they aren’t. 😉
See ‘gaseous balls’ above 😉 There’s a whole bunch of gas related ephemera to consider - Earth/earthquake lights, Will-o'-the-wisp etc.
Unidentified means all the obvious stuff has been considered and ruled out, so what’s left is the stuff we don’t know about. Chuck yours into the mix along with my multi-dimensional beings!
Multi dimensional has always appealed to me as well, though given the hyperbole on that new google willow thing, maybe they’re just subroutines from another plane 😅
Another moment’s thought and that’s what they’ve always been; parallel versions of ourselves invented quantum chips far earlier and they’ve been poking holes into our plane ever since. Our turn soon!
I am a bit surprised nobody’s championing the “UFOs as tulpoidal materializations projected from the collective human unconscious, initiated by stress conditions in large numbers of people” a la Tom Bearden.

That's a good one. I could accept that more easily than extraterrestrial (actually, extra-solar system) visitation.
The patterns of sightings outbreaks might fit better than terrestrial manifestations of things or entities we just don't understand yet. Though that could also be explained by our tendency to notice things we've seen but not noticed before once the idea is brought to our conscious train of thought.
Instead of an exposé on UFOs, someone should do an exposé of the UFO "Industry" ("Buy my book", "Come to my lecture", "Watch my video" etc. ).

and, having had some pretty ridiculous experiences myself, i appreciate how difficult it can be to hold as true, an experience that others wont even consider
and so it is, if the doctors and priests of mainstream society will pay no mind, charlatans and the genuine will spring up to fill the void

The truth is out there, I hope!
What I mean is I believe it's more likely that something real, but not originating from outside of our solar system. I think that's more likely than beings there are beings here that came here from another system in the universe. I stated my reasons earlier. There are many valid arguments against my reasoning though.
@oldsynthguy and others have mentioned some better examples than I can of such possible earth-based causes up-thread.
We shouldn't discount the possibility that these are sightings of other forms of life here that we just don't understand yet. Or, they could be some physical phenomena that we don't understand. Or, perhaps they could be people getting confused glimpses of what we'd call "spiritual beings" - angels and/or demons.
When I used the word "things" I meant physical phenomena, and when I said "entities" I meant beings.
I'm not sure our human brains are wired adequately to decode some things we see without partially re-mapping our perception into something that fits into our idea of the world better. Maybe that's not entirely successful. Maybe we see another form of life, or a spiritual being, but our brain can't fully handle that so it rather unsuccessfully tries to turn it into something we can understand.
On another subject: there's absolutely no reason to assume there's one common cause for such sightings.

I think that’s exactly what’s publicly happening in many cases. In earlier times in Ireland for example, a sighting might be attributed to Aes sídhe, in Germany, kobolds. Ghosts, goblins, angels, demons, faeries, spiritual experiences….so nowadays in our more technologically advanced world we tend to think of them as creatures in spaceships. And ‘I encountered a group of aliens in a wood’ is going to attract less public mocking than ‘I saw some faeries’.
Since humans have been sharing and trying to understand experiences of witnessing ‘others’, ever since we have learned to communicate, there’s obviously something going on.
But I don’t think there’s a single explanation.

I tend to agree. Not least because the notion of stacked layers of wtf potentially drives a much more satisfying story.
Understanding the reasons for deliberately making up fantasy experiences along with the reasons for maintaining a practised lack of interest on the topic seems key to assessing and categorising reports.
