Having the occasional sale would generate some talk, but this app has not had a single sale in its 6 year lifespan.

Fantastic app, one of my oldest apps that I still use in almost every tune I do, together of course with ChordPolyPad.
I have always felt kind of bad for Laurent that there isn't more talk about these apps, as they have been almost feature-complete for years, but then again, looking at that latest list of updates there indeed were a bunch of features I welcome.

But as SPA and CPP have been "just working" (awesomely) but never are the focus of the discussions, and there rarely is anything to complain about with them, they have become the "secret weapon" for those in the know, but not many actually talk about them. As far as I'm concerned, the combo of SPA+CPP is what I benchmark other arpeggiators or chord apps against.

I’ve always enjoyed using SPA, the update has prompted me to have a close look at ChordPolyPad, I seem to have missed that one.

If you do, bear two things in mind:

    1. Each pad in CPP can also be an X/Y midi controller. Great for controlling LFO's, gates etc, for that specific chord.
    2. The true power happens when you connect the two, and let them trigger each other. You might appreciate this post (from 2016 no less) from @Kaikoo which was an eye opener for me at the time: https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/comment/230988/#Comment_230988

Ah thanks, I’ll check that out!

wanted to show that we can use CPP and SPA on desktop with Live (so without iPad) despite that it doesn't work as AU/VST :)

Great thanks, I’ll test that out tomorrow!

  • This updates been fun, made a sequence at work from the iPhone that let me mess with all the new features and learn em pretty quick. Great intuitive app!

It’s a great update. Lots of interesting new features.
Is anyone else not being able to use the scale option in line edit mode or am I doing something wrong? Regardless of which scale I select, with “scale” enabled I can always set the line to all chromatic notes / intervals without any constraint.

Noticed that the lanes do not reflect the scale (custom scale) selected… maybe it’s me..

It's definitely one of my top 10 used apps, out of several hundred, and definitely my most used ARP.

See the comment above tho. The quantization is still happening if you haven't turned "Scaled" off in the line edit pop-up

Ok, so it quantizes to the closest ‘in scale’ note? Would be nice if it reflected the scale.. but no biggy… Thanks..

Yes. I think it is left like that intentionally though, so you can see what it will default to if you turn ‘scaled’ off.

Well, it is just the first version. I don't know if an option to have it reflect the scale will be difficult to implement. It could be nice for 'manual' tuning.

I think it quantizes upward, not to the closest note. I haven't tested carefully though.

I prefer it the way it works. That way experimenting with different scales doesn't lead to a changes in the pattern.

    All it takes is a switch…. On/Off…
Maybe I will wrap my head around it soon..

    Bless..

CPP w Ableton Live (oops I meant to show SPA, but it works the same)

Sorry for dumb question but how are you connecting iPad to Mac? Is this a Bluetooth thing, or via an Audio interface?

To connect your iPad to you computer you just plug your ipad to you computer with the regular usb cable, like you were charging it on your computer, then head to the "Audio Midi Setup" built-in app on your Mac, Window, Show Audio Devices, and click "connect" on the left. Then head to SPA's MIDI OUT preferences and pick MIDI IDAM

I'm not using an iPad, I use CPP and SPA on my Mac.

Ah! Of course, sorry- forgot that the conversation was about using SPA on Macs😂 my mistake!

Will try it in Ableton, and failing that, will connect iPad to MacBook.

    Cheers @stelvio !

if you want to connect via bluetooth (you'll get a bit more latency):
on the iPad tap the gear icon in SPA, then Setup, then Midi Over Bluetooth, Client, then chose Advertise MIDI Service...
Head over to Audio MIDI Setup on your Mac, Window, Show MIDI Studio, click the Bluetooth icon in the Menu bar on the right (extend the window if you don't see it) and connect your iPad there. Then in SPA's MIDI OUT preferences, pick your computer

So I've been using the new update for like an hour and it's amazing but I ran into an issue (for a certain use case). Maybe I'm missing something though as it's so fresh...

Say you're using CPP to trigger SPA (in this case SPA needs to be set to Chromatic) and say you have a bunch of premade arps that you want to alter with the new random features. All the lines that were previously unused in your arp presets become destinations where the randomizer can place new steps. And that's great, except that it will likely cause harmonic clashes since previously unused lines won't necessarily be multiples of 12.
This happens even if Tune Relative is set to off in the randomizer

So one solution is to manually set all the lines to something like 0, +12 or -12 or +36.. which is no big deal but kinda spoils the fun and immediate nature of a randomizer

Another way is to use "Keep Existing Events" but I then miss out on a lot of the randomizer's fun features

And lastly, another way is to start from scratch and have sort of templates to randomize, with lanes set to only multiples of 12

Maybe there should be a way for the randomizing options to constraint lines to multiples of 12?

the mac version IS a separate purchase to IOS, before someone (usually) asks

Says it’s universal on the App Store, and I’m loading it without issue on the Mac (Logic).

    Bargain.

I could swear it was a separate purchase ,& have posted that previously on forum , also Chord app ,
but no mention of switch to Universal in Version history .

@stelvio seems I was talking to you in 2022 about CPP , did you buy a Mac only version then ?

Happy they are (now ? ) Universal , sorry if I gave bad info .

Yes been using CPP a lot so it's very likely we talked :)
And yes I did buy the desktop version (actually bought SPA 3 times because the AU update was also a separate purchase, but all good for me cause I've created so much with both CPP / SPA)

  • @stelvio just checking my memory/sanity . thanks .

  • Wait, has StepPolyArp been auv3 all this time?

I was just watching @Gavinski ’s video, and then his old video on it from three years ago, and I realized it was an auv3 app even way back then.

For some reason I was always under the impression that this was only an IAA app and that’s why I never bought it.

I thought the main thing about this new update was that it was now auv3 lol

    Wow. I’m dumb 🤓 sigh

Cheers for this - works really nicely using the app on a Mac - opening both Live and SPA, setting the SPA MIDI out and just picking SPA from the list in Live…saves me having to route MIDI from the iPad via IDAM!

  • This is a surprise gift for the new year! Just using the new variable line speed opens all kinds of interesting rhythms etc. and the random controls: fun!

  • Woah! StepPolyArp and ChordPolyPad are even available on Intel Macs. Who knew?
They work great as standalone midi controllers for my Mac DAWs.

  • Great news! Superb tool and amazing it gets updates in 2025, too

    either.
is it only for the newer mac chip computers though? or any of them?

Any of them it seems, take a look at the appstore to see what it runs on

  • I think I’m going to have to get ChordPolyPad, looks great in the vids, and Mac integration is a real bonus.

  • Best arp ever, anywhere, just got better!
