NEW APP: Synth One J6, Chorus Test - Can you tell which is which?

Spent around 40–50 hours dialing in the chorus for this. Nothing beats the sound of real vintage hardware. but this gets dangerously close. Good enough for rock ’n’ roll?

Synth heads, I’m sure you’ll be able to tell which is which. But what about everyone else...

Can you tell which is which for the tests?

Looking forward to your guesses.

Also, the video has a little preview of a quick preset I made.

Synth One J6 is an upcoming free app.
Easily the most lush, warm, hardware-sounding synth app I've ever made. It’s the next level 🔥
Using Machine Learning, it's an analog-like experience that even surprises me.

It’s been about a year and a half in the making, and if everything goes smoothly, beta testing should be ready later this week.

If you’ve helped create presets or reported bugs for AudioKit apps in the past, there’s a good chance you’ll hear from me soon. If you haven't by Friday, feel free to nudge me.

Can't wait to get this out!

  • 😩😭 😭

Why are you so kind to us? We’re not worthy.

  • wow so nice, very generous of you. drool!

  • This one has me foaming at the mouth…

  • Wow, great sound, looking forward to this one!

  • I could tell the difference between the two chorus’s. The second one sounds deeper and wider. I think it’s the Juno hardware.

I will post the answers on Wednesday. I might give everyone who answers right a chance to get the app early

I think the first one is the juno app…. And the second one is the hardware….. Both sound quite amazing! Great job on this one whichever it is!!

(I had to edit my comment cuz i literally am dyslexic)

  • Will it PWM :sunglasses:

    @samu

    More exclusive details, Shhhh 🤫

  • Awww, I'm a bit of a 'Pulse Wave Person', think of it as low-mood / high-mood and everything in-between controlled by the 'duty' that needs to be performed :sunglasses:

  • (Listening via iPad speakers and with no experience with the original synth….) :p

For some reason I thought the first example was the real juno.
    Both sounded cool.

  • The first one is hardware…it’s really close though.
I’ll put it like this… if you told me it was ALL the app I wouldn’t be surprised.

I’m looking forward to designing patches in this !!!

There is a hardware note and app note in each note pair. Good luck, folks!

  • I think the second is the real deal, it has a little bit more sweep. Both sound good, and in the mix no one will ever know the difference.

Can you at least charge for in-app purchases or have a tip option? I feel like you are not being properly compensated for your time.

There will be a tip option to give to school music programs I'm involved with. Tipping is completely optional, of course. All functionality will be unlocked regardless if you donate. Of course, any donations will go a long way and are appreciated 🙏

  • My guess is that the second one is the real Juno.

  • Going with 2nd = real Juno too.

    Ready to be wrong!

  • I have a feeling the second sound you hear it’s the other way around.

Is there a rough estimate when we should be looking out for this one, Matt?

  • excited about this. thank you for another free synth. very kind of you.

i don’t know which one is real and which is app. i lean towards the second one being real but part of me thinks they are both app sounds.

  • The second one has a little more phasing. They both sound good.

  • @AnalogMatthew My vote goes to Number 1 (I'm prepared to be proven wrong though).

  • My vote is for number 2!

    Loving all this discussion!
Thanks to everyone who checked out the video and was brave enough to answer.

    Regarding the Filter questions:

A desktop developer kindly donated some Juno filter code. It sounded decent at first, but like most vintage synth VSTs, it felt too top-heavy and lacked real analog character. No wild bass, no screaming highs, just that typical flat "software" sound with no quirky frequencies or life. (I'm pretty sure he doesn't read this forum, so, nobody send this to him 😂)

Since Synth One J6 isn’t an emulation of specific hardware, I swapped it out for a Jupiter 8-style filter for my upcoming Jupiter-inspired app, due in May. Then, adjusted the filter slope to feel give it a bit more depth. Ironically, it ended up feeling more like a real Juno than most "official" Juno code out there.

    What’s the difference?

    • Juno filters are digitally controlled analog. Bright and punchy, great for cutting through a mix, but often weak in VST form.

    • Jupiter filters are fully analog, warm, lush, and a little unpredictable. It has that rich, organic sound people associate with a classic Jupiter synth. That’s the vibe I wanted to capture.

Check out this video, to see me tweaking a preset. You’ll hear how this filter shines on lush, emotional pads, perfect for endless late-night tweaking while pretending you’re in Blade Runner.

On the fun tip... can you spot the filters?

    https://audiokitpro.com/mp3/FilterTest.mp3

    Here's a Filter Demo between:

    • Free iOS/iPad App, Synth One J6
    • $200 VST by a company starting with "R"
    • $1800 Vintage refurbished Juno

What are your guesses for each?
(All 3 sound clips are Init patches, C2 & C3 held, No Chorus, Full Resonance)

The first two people to guess correctly will get Synth One J6 a week before the release!
