Hi, I tried the beta Battalion. It's a very cool app!
Regarding beta/TestFlight-Battalion's "GUI, UX, sound output, etc.", I did not encounter/experience any serious issues so far, in my test environment (= old iPadPro2017).
[Note: I have not done rigorous testing. I just tried a few factory presets.]

    *
Below is a report of issues that occurred in my environment. I apologize if I’ve reported non-problematic behaviors of TestFlight/beta Battalion app as issues.

    *

The Lock icons(🔒) inside the red highlighted area in the screenshot above are not visible, but the Lock feature is available for these parameters. So I think that there are invisible Lock icons. [I think this behavior of beta-Battalion is an issue.]

-This behavior occurred with both AUv3 and Standalone TestFlight-Battalion, in my environment.

    *

When I tested a Lock icon(🔒) feature, I accidentally made a user preset where the Lock icon was displayed in an odd position. However, I have no idea how to reproduce this behavior of beta-Battalion.

-I will send this user preset to @trickyflemming and @amusesmile via PM feature of Loopy Pro forum.

    *
When a Lock icon(🔒) is set on a knob or switch or etc., ‘preset switching speed(?)’ slows down when a "<" or ">" button is tapped repeatedly.
-In my environment, setting 1 Lock icon causes a slight decrease in the speed of preset switching.
-Setting 6 Lock icons makes it easier to see the decrease in the speed of preset switching, in my environment.
-Incidentally, when I made multiple user presets including multiple ‘translucent Lock icons for user preset’ and switch from one user preset to another by repeatedly tapping the "<" or ">" buttons, the ‘preset switching speed’ is not reduced. (Sorry if my explanation is not clear.)

-The above-mentioned behavior(= slow preset switching) occurred with both AUv3 and Standalone TestFlight-Battalion, in my environment.

[Note: The above-mentioned behavior of the beta-Battalion(= slow preset switching) may simply be due to the fact that my iPad is old and has low processing power.]

    *
When I enabled beta-Battalion's TOOLTIPS feature and tapped and held a knob or switch or etc. with my finger, no TIPS appeared, in my environment. [Having said that, it may be that the knob or switch I tapped and held did not have a text of TIPS in the first place.]

-The above-mentioned behavior occurred with both AUv3 and Standalone TestFlight-Battalion, in my environment.

    *
[Note: I think the following two things are not issues at all. But I report them just in case.]

    1.
If ‘Unlock All Control’ feature of beta-Battalion is used after a Lock icon(🔒) is attached to the BPM of Battalion, this Lock icon is not unlocked. [Having said that, the behavior of Battalion may be a developers’ (= @trickyflemming and @amusesmile s’) intent/design.]

    2.
If a user preset is saved after attaching a lock icon to the BPM of Battalion, when this user preset is loaded, there is no Lock icon on the BPM. [Having said that, it may be a developers’ intent/design.]

    *
    My test environment:
    TestFlight UA Battalion 1.1.0 (1.1.0)
    iPad Pro 10.5 inch (2017)
iPadOS v16.7.2 [But it should be the latest v17.7.5 in my environment. So my report may be incorrect. I’m sorry.]
    Host apps: AUM, Drambo

  • @trickyflemming @amusesmile
Tapping the RESET SIZE button of beta-Battalion will further enlarge the originally maximized screen. [I think this behavior of beta-Battalion is an issue.]

-I guess the RESET SIZE feature is for Mac/Win, but I’m not sure.

  • In standalone mode, is there no way to drag the tempo up/down? When I tap on the bpm, I can enter a new bpm into the text field, but I can’t see a way of dragging up and down so that it can be changed incrementally….

Why not just use oneshot because its more than 8 tracks. More tracks are actually needed for acoustic drums in general. I used to think all I need is a kick and a snare but 16 track kits are easy to use.

    Then use Battalion with oneshot.

Regular kits mixed with synth type drums.

I guess you dont get sound mangling from Battalion on all tracks but guess you wouldnt generally mangle acoustic much anyway.

    My ocd is gone.

Been trying to make an everthing drum template.

Now its either a sample player using host goodness.

    Or Battalion.

2 different types of drum ways.

If I need acoustic or plain drums. Just use host samplers.

If I know it will be gliitch electronic just use battalion with the option of loading as many plain samplers as needed or see how 2 x Battalion might work. Working on a crossfader option between battalions also.

On the mixer page, you can set multiple voices to trigger off of one voice. For instance, if you set Voice 2 to Trigger 1, then every time Voice 1 fires, Voice 2 will also fire.

Not so sure about that. My question was addressed to the dev so I’ll wait to hear what he prefers. He seems pretty active here.

  • It's super good at making dystopian sort of electronic beds, or 'soundscapes', sort of abstract experimental drones, a bit like Noisespace, but also different. Haven't tried any 'funky beats' with it yet. But as an experimental droner its brilliant.

Posting bugs here is preferred! We can keep everything in one place. Emailing us directly is fine as well.

  • I just tried sequencing Battalion using DigiStix2 as a sequencer (I appreciate its polyrhythmic options), and it works a charm, using the GM option.

Doh, my bad, I thought you preferred seeing system info (device, iOS) automatically in TestFlight.

Alright, here it is then. I’ve earlier sent some reports in TF, hope you see them, too.

[edit] @audiblevideo thank you for fixing that post. Please don't do that again.

It's fine to make a thread in the Other section for something like this. It's not OK to link to it in other threads where it has no place.

Please remove the link and the mention of that thread from your previous post. Anyone who cares to read such things can visit that section any time they feel like looking for such topics. The rest don't need to have someone announcing it elsewhere.

The forwards/backwards arrows for preset browsing in many sections of the app don’t work well @trickyflemming - eg in the Tone section. Even with a pencil it’s almost impossible to use them, in my experience so far. Especially the forwards arrows are problematic, the touch areas need expanding. A challenge, maybe, I know, when there’s so much crammed into the UI.

    .

  • The app will crash if you midi map in Drambo and press the arrows next to presets.

It will map about 80 parameters and crash if you map the dice.

Not that you map these parameters anyway.

    Just saying.

Yes I'm also finding it difficult to tap on the controls too. Seems to take several taps to regiser a hit. Also finding the forward/back arrows problematic and the dice control in the Voice Preset box is quite hit and miss.

    Issue(?):
Even if an instrument's MUTE switch is enabled on the VOICE page of Beta-Battalion, tapping an area(?) to the left of the MUTE switch may cause noise(?) to be output.
-This behavior occurs on both Standalone and AUv3 TestFlight Battalion.
-I made a video file about it. The download URL is below.

    noise.MOV
    9.5MB
    Expiration date: April 4, 2025
    https://we.tl/t-72LvQxw3Nh

    Note:
I did the following 5 tests. And in all 5 of these tests, the above-mentioned noise(?) was output by the steps/way as shown in the above-mentioned “noise.MOV” video file.

    1️⃣ Standalone beta-Battalion, iPad speakers
-The above-mentioned “noise.MOV” is a record of this test 1️⃣.
-I used only the 2nd instrument in the default preset.
-The same or similar behavior (= noise[?]) occurred when using a factory preset "AW After Awards 110". (Note: The above-mentioned video file does not include a test of a factory preset.)
    2️⃣ Drambo as a host app (44100 Hz, 1024 samples), iPad speakers, AUv3 beta-Battalion
    3️⃣ Drambo as a host app (44100 Hz, 128 samples), iPad speakers, AUv3 beta-Battalion
    4️⃣ Drambo as a host app (48000 Hz, 1024 samples), lightning earpods, AUv3 beta-Battalion
    5️⃣ Drambo as a host app (48000 Hz, 128 samples), lightning earpods, AUv3 beta-Battalion

  • why are some ua apps fullscreen and some not?

  • Beta Build 1.1.0 on iPad Pro 10.5 / iPadOS 17.2

    Feature Request:

When saving a preset, the UI isn‘t optimal for handling the virtual iPad keyboard:

    • The virtual keyboard covers the lower half of the ipad screen, so the cancel and save buttons are hidden. One has to manually close the keyboard to be able to save the preset. Maybe position the buttons right below the textbox for the filename.
    • The cursor movement feature of the virtual keyboard does not work. But at least one can tap on a letter in the filename to position the cursor
    • Save action could be triggered with the return key

I hit this too while testing. Super annoying. We'll definitely fix it.

  • @trickyflemming @amusesmile Obviously i realise that this is not it’s designed for use, but I’m wondering whether Battalion can be routed so that the sounds designed can be played chromatically via incoming MIDI?

I realise that they can be used melodically via the pitch automation in the sequencer but there are some really lovely physical modelling type synth engines there which could easily be used like a ‘regular’ synth as a bonus feature if it were possible.

Is such routing possible or can MIDI only trigger the different individual voices in a one shot way?

Separate thought i had while testing the app: i know it might not be the most stylish visually but i wonder whether one of the colour options should be such that the different voices have their own specific colours and when a particular voice is selected, all of the voice-specific controls shown onscreen also change colour to reflect the colour of the selected voice? Not the prettiest, agreed, but might be useful to keep on top of what voice you’re working on at any given point. Just suggesting it could be a selectable option within the colour settings? Cheers.

    Yes to this

Was not expecting an iPhone version. After a short play, it’s brilliant. The zoom is pretty much mandatory but great to have on the phone. I recently picked up LION on the desktop and Battalion is just as rammed with out-there fun stuff.

Where’s the zoom function? I can’t find it

This is probably an iOS feature. But you can’t play polyphony tapping on the iPhone display after you enable zoom. It’s because of the three-finger tap.

Ah thanks. I thought they were talking about a feature in the app like in toneboosters apps.
