  • What would sell it for me is if I can construct kits on the PC desktop and transfer the saved preset to iPad.

This exists! You can save presets from the Win/Mac version and load them on iPad.

  • Great, congratulations on the release 🎉 off to the app store, totally worth it.

  • Listening to the demos. I so want to get this but nothing sounds like I’d be upgrading from Drum Computer. I’ve got unfiltered audio bass mint to help.

Love iOS but drum machines apps, eh. Hardware still wins for me.

  • Plan to get this when the budget permits. Worth the price, IMO.

Hardware is great, though I'm not sure we'll ever see The Perfect Drum Machine. For $30 (or $40) the answer is "both."

Take back what I said. Clicked on the TestFlight link to see if it still works. It sounds really good . The online demos didn’t give an accurate representation

But can’t pull the trigger. I’m getting the same hot iPad running the app Gavinski got. And CHEWED through the battery after a short mess around Ugh

Ayyyyyy I’m not alone! I can run Battalion in AUM. With a couple effects. Any more and I start gettin the cracks, chirps, dspMAX. And the hotness. Will have to upgrade my device situation before I consider buying this one. And prolly a lotta the new stuff to come. Yay!!!

    Fantastique. Thanks

I often say: if it was hardware, with a dedicated touch screen, these devices would cost 1 to 2 grand, easy.
Samplr as hardware? Patterning 3 as hardware? About 2 grand a piece. I might be adding Battalion to this list. It looks delicious. 30 bucks is nothing compared to hardware, IMO.

I know, I know... How could I compare hardware to iOS stuff? Well, I was exclusively hardware for fifteen years.... before Samplr entered my life. There is, simply put, no other instrument in hardware form that does what it does so easily and beautifully. Painting with music. And Patterning is a hardware Drum Machine/Sampler worshipper's dream to program and to build an original groove. Yes, I worship Drum Machines and Samplers, love them so much. And I hate working on a laptop.

Now, this Battalion app ALREADY exceeds my experience with Elektron instruments, and advanced sound sculpting in general. No menu diving, it's tactile, it has variations and randomness galore. Simple to program. Limitless memory, bring your own sounds too!!! And, best of all, it SOUNDS better than the Electron stuff I've had. Yeah, I said it. In my first hour with it I had more fun hitting the randomization button than looking at a tiny screen trying to learn which menu to dive into and what shift button I had to press and what parameters I had to link to where is that damn manual again?... Hey, this thing is FUN TO PLAY, and I can't say that about the Octatrack or the Digitakt, which became tedious and I needed to cut them loose because they dragged my workflow down.

Wish I could afford a brandy new latest model iPad Pro, but this sings on my now "legacy" device.

Dude, fucking awesome app! Wow! Made my top three.

  • For an iPhone version, you could simply zoom the interface and add a side scrolling bar in the style of Fugue Machine Rubato, or a flick gesture like the one in Buttersynth.

Yes! That shouldn’t be too much work or killing the experience. And btw the depth and outstanding qualities of this piece of software are weighing much more on my experience, than maybe having to scroll can make it feel “uncool”.
It’d be such a shame if it weren’t released on the iPhone. I’ve been beta testing it on my phone. And I only used it there. It works great. And I do not think it’s too finicky. It runs well and I’ve done so much work with it already. To tell my bandmates “Yo, the last three songs we made, we can’t play them anymore” is really not a good outlook for me.

Please please please unfiltered audio. We need this! You have the version lying around. And just releasing it, would be at least 30€ more for you 😬

  • With huge apologies I just had a £700 MOT bill for my car so I can't buy right now... but I will in July!

  • Ran it for 20 min on a 2020 iPad mini. Temp went from 74f to 100f. battery 97to 84%.

Will do the same test later on an m2 iPad to be fair.

  • @trickyflemming I've been on the TF beta. How do I buy the app and keep all the great presets I've made in the beta version?

Yes, great app but definitely has heating and battery usage issues

If you update to the appstore release version, all your presets will still be there. Just don't uninstall the beta before installing the appstore version

This worked fine for me. Are the battery/heat issues something that can be improved from a dev standpoint, or is it just another sign that imma need to get new devices? @Gavinski

I dunno, tbh, the devs would have to comment on that!

From similar experiences with many other apps, the pattern seems to be that battery drain issues are usually more related to UI/visuals/screen refreshing, whereas high CPU tends to be down to DSP/audio ... the battery can be draining quickly even when CPU is at a comfortable level, and the we can get DSP spikes/dropouts when battery consumption is normal.

Earlier versions of other UA apps like Silo and LO-FI-AF also drained battery more quickly as I recall, but I seem to remember this improved with updates, and also with an option they added to turn off certain visualisations in these apps.

Battalion has a larger UI and needs more updating e.g. with modulation animations, which might explain the higher requirement for screen redrawing and therefore battery drain/heat compared to their other apps?

It would be interesting to compare battery/heat issues if Battalion was to include an option to reduce screen redrawing e.g. to switch off modulation animations?

That's right I think. But I'm also wondering if it's something about JUCE. Because this often seems to be an issue with desktop ports. I really don't know tho. And it's promising that the old UA apps improved in this regard.

Also, I wonder what the app's screen refresh rate is, whether it is related to system screen refresh, which I guess is usually 60Hz, or even 120 Hz with ProMotion on an iPad Pro. If so, that will guzzle battery like nothing else.

If the devs are able to limit screen refresh to 30Hz, say, that might make a difference. Maybe, if devs added a battery saver mode, like some games do, to limit refresh rate, that could help.

    But maybe also JUCE related.

@trickyflemming - any thoughts on this?

  • For example, the beta on my iPhone SE 3 never heated up the device much, even in AUM sessions with several audio pipelines...must really be a screen thing.

  • Tested for 20 min on the M2 iPad. temp 75 to 95 with that said, did not feel anything as warm as the iPad mini. Battery life 99 to 92%

All unscientific. in my opinion, the newer iPad should handle apps like these better. Your mileage may vary.

I also really love the sounds. As a fan of Drum computer, I feel like this app sounds better but just my opinion.

It's definitely easier for me to get sounds I like out of this than with Drum Computer. It really doesn't take much to get good sounds with Battalion. I feel like I can do anything with Drum Computer, but have to work really, really hard at it to get what I want.

Sorry Gav, when you say “update to..” do you mean go to App Store and purchase? Just to be clear. There’s no option to update (?)

Yes, that's what I mean. Buy the appstore version, it will replace the beta version, you'll lose nothing, don't worry

  • Bought.
Just want to reiterate (well, re-reiterate because I’ve already reiterated), this is the best sounding app on iOS.
If you’re on the fence, get off the fence onto the “buy this” side…..
