@craftycurate that's right. We added in a frame rate limiter to help with that. Unfortunately, Battalion already has that limiter in place, so deeper investigation is needed. I'll have to do the JUCE repaint debugging to see if we have a runaway animation somewhere. We checked it before the desktop release, but we might have missed an animation, or something may have snuck in! It's a priority, along with fixing in-app links to the manual and resources.
It's a corker I agree, and I've only scratched the surface
+10! App of the year so far for me, and I've only just begun to explore its huge capabilities.
Hi @trickyflemming, I've been enjoying Battalion a TON on iPad as expected. Being able to perform over the rhythmic layers so easily without being end of chain effects is a godsend.
I have one tiny request that would love to see happening: the perform depth macro resets to 100%, I think while all the presets should set that at 100% so all the performance layout knobs make changes by default, I think the double tap should send the knob to 0% instead of 100%.
My workflow is so that I set it at 0% and use the perform depth to make transitions and go back to 0%. The issue is that it's hard to dial 0% exactly with a finger, thing that is a non-issue on the desktop version as no one would play it with a mouse.
Would be that possible and would fit the app's scope?
Cheers!
It would also be useful if double tap on the modulation sequencer sliders would reset them to zero btw @trickyflemming. If you set something like velocity to a certain value there currently, for example, it's almost impossible to get it back to zero.
I'm all for it (should be standard) BUT you do have text input and undo. EDIT: I don't know why I didn't try but there is reset on double tap on all stuff I could test (not sure what you mean with mod. seq. sliders).
Yes, tho I noticed the undo is limited. Eg it won't undo an action like loading a sample. Text edit to reset a bunch of velocity sliders, up to 64 lol, is not a great solution. Definitely needs double tap to reset. I'll also paste in some feedback someone wrote on my YouTube video that I think is pertinent, for the devs. Excuse the formatting, text was extracted from screenshot:
"ALL of Battalion's
"fader" controls (including volumes, velocity,
pitch, etc. in the "SEQ" section) instantly
match the user's touch screen input position,
so it becomes basically impossible to make
subtle adjustments without overriding
preexisting values. That can lead to
accidental volume spikes. Faders in the "SEQ"
section don't respond to "double tap"
gestures. For example it's tedious to reset the
timing/pitch value for a single step when
clearing all steps data is not the intent.
The 8 track mixer "mute buttons" abruptly
mute audio instead of muting sequencer MIDI
data, so the tails of sounds get suddenly cut
off when muting a track. This makes
Battalion not viable to jam using the mutes."
Are you doing mistakes on 64 settings in a row, are you drunk? Jokes aside, there's double tap reset on almost all setting I can tweak, still don't understand what sliders you refering to
EDIT: Ah, now I got it, those value sliders. Yeah that def. would be a good thing.
Yes, the sliders for modulation on the sequencer page, and it's not about making mistakes and correcting those. It's just about the simple desire to change any slider to have a value of zero without effort or time wasted. It's also related to the problem quoted above, that all sliders in this app jump to a value when you touch somewhere. That makes it difficult to dial in subtle changes, instead you might get an unexpected lurch.
The recent release by sqsl, Strips, has a nice option for this. There's a button on the UI allowing you to toggle this behavior.
In one mode, “faders” are treated as touch strips - it means if you have 0 on fader and touch in the middle it will directly jump to the middle value. In the other mode, if you have fader at 0 and you touch in the middle, nothing happens until you start to move your finger, in which case the value will be change relative to movement.
Many apps would benefit from an implementation like this. Just as knobs in most apps benefit from vertical swipes for coarse adjustments and horizontal for fine adjustments
One thing I find frustrating, and maybe I've missed something, but it doesn't seem possible to only randomize either the drums or the sequencer? And the random sequences are virtually unusable, at least for anything resembling a normal rhythm. I'd like to sequence something and randomize the patch, but it doesn't seem possible. The lock doesn't work on any of the sequence stuff I've tried. And equally, it would be cool to try different random sequences with the same sounds, but isn't possible, although I guess you could lock as many parameters as possible. If anyone has any insight I'd appreciate it.
Sorry if it’s been asked/answered in this thread but where the hell is the INIT patch?! The manual isn’t available from the manual link.
In AUM it opens to a Default preset or choose Reset To Defaults from the preset dropdown to get a clean slate.
Thank you 😊
Randomize patch from Voice Presets section.
@anickt
Yo, thank you! How did I miss that? Still, I would like to be able to randomize everything except the sequencer with one button. I'm asking too much... Haha. What an app this is.
Okay, but there's no equivalent for the sequencer, is there? Can I lock a voice/patch entirely?
Not at the moment I believe. There's been previosu conversation about enhancements to the locking/randomisation system, and rumours that a more comprehensive and flexible randomisation system is on the cards at some point, but that first priority is the pattern system.
Go to the sequencer page and randomize away! Just choose a parameter lane (pitch, velocity etc.) and roll the die. There may be other approaches but I’m not that far in yet.
Oh yes, but randomizing every parameter for every voice is a lot! Just one button for voices and one for sequences would be amazing, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to implement.
Anyone know if you can direct sample into the tracks like in koala? Or if there is some kind of built in way to record audio input (for example from hardware)
I don't think so, pretty sure you just have to import
Thanks for verifying, anyone know where we could send feature requests? Would be a very helpful addition.
What about parameter locking per step similar to an elektron sequencer? Is this possible?
No, though it has step based modulation. My 20 minute YouTube walkthrough gives a fairly thorough overview of the features btw. Devs are active on this thread, but best place for feature requests is always via dev email, most devs have some kind of Contact page on their website and I'm sure UA are no exception
I made this on a teeny tiny iPhone SE 3 with heavy use of the last beta of Battalion.
Will @trickyflemming be convinced to restart iPhone support? Me, I’d buy it on day one.
