What visual art do you create? Is it good?

Yep, the old "is it good" forum trope is still going strong after over a half of a decade. 😂

That said, I'm not really all that great when it comes to drawing representational art. Tends to come off more as cartoony than anything, which is my strongsuit with digital art.

However, while I love digitally cartooning, I want to relax with traditional media. So, I turned on my "March 2022" playlist on Spotify and dove into using cheap $4 Blick Essentials oil pastels on Canson mixed media paper. And this was the result.

Yes it's pure abstract art, and yes I'm an amateur with basic knowledge of colour theory. 😂 Took me under an hour to make, but I'm hella chuffed with the results. ☺️ I may even make a piece of Ambient to accompany this piece and use it as an album cover.

SO, if you're into the visual arts (whether digital or traditional or both), show off your work below! I want to see what you make, especially if you consider it good.

i made very few simple drawings when i bough myself apple pencil but then very quickly lost interest in moving it at some higher level by studying some techniques and learning more (as with most of things in my life lol)

  • @dendy Those art pieces are incredible! 😃 You really have a great talent there, so hopefully someday you will pick back up your Apple pencil and dive into another five pieces.

  • thanks but nah, i don't think they are special :-)) but who knows.. maybe one day i will return back to this

In my humble opinion, they are unique and cool art pieces, and the third one is a mindf-ck in all the best ways.

but who knows.. maybe one day i will return back to this

    Fingers are crossed, mate.

  • Not really visual art, but when I make something I try to make it look interesting.

  • Hey, nice thread and already some cool art posted!

I draw a lot. All the art hanging in our home is something I've drawn for my wife. I like to draw maps. I draw detailed maps of places we've been but with our personal adventures and names of things drawn on the map. I drew a detailed map of "heaven" once that was pretty funny. My art is like graphic novel art because I can't draw realistically. I have had two one panel comics published. My wife encourages me to send out more comics for consideration but I hate waiting around for the rejection slip.

@jwmmakerofmusic . Cool art. I like a bit of abstract too. I use to paint a lot with acrylics, and also loved using pastels and make charcoal drawings.

    Those are dandy, @dendy ! You’re good.

@Ailerom, neat wood pieces. Are those cajon’s? A couple sure looks like they could be.

  • Creative people tend to be creative in more than one field (at least in my experience). Many of my artist friends were also painters/illustrators as well as musicians or writers. If you're creative, you have to create. :)

  • @Ailerom Those pieces are magnificent! Woodworking is seriously a great skillset to have. :)

@abf Feel free to share the maps here. I'd like to see. :) And yeah, I can't really draw realistically to save my arse myself. It is what it is. :)

@Dav Thank you kindly, my friend. :) Acrylics, pastels (dry and oil), and charcoal drawings are great mediums. ^_^ I live in a carpeted apartment, so any sort of paints are a "no go" for me (lest I spill, management becomes pissed, and I'm evicted 😂🫣). But, I definitely need to get back into charcoals someday. The "General's" brand I heard makes good ones.

@NeuM Agreed 110%! Creating more than one way is vital to the creative soul. Been mostly in a musical burnout, and didn't want to do digital art, so I'm like, "Wait a second. Abstract art has always been cool, and I've always wanted to give oil pastels a spin." So, that's where my creativity ended up, and the piece I made above inspired a piece of Ambient believe it or not. Sometimes creating in one way feeds into another way.

  • that's a nice pipe up there :)

I used to write quite a bit. That's always a good outlet also. Makes no difference what you choose to write, just get something down and see where it goes. Sometimes it's short stories, sometimes it's lyrics or poetry or whatever.

By the way, I used to paint with gouache, acrylics, oils on canvas. I recommend several virtual painting apps on iPad: There is the very popular "Procreate" (of course), but there is also the excellent "Art Set" painting app (which has some very convincing looking pens, pencils, chalks, pastels, markers, watercolors, oils, airbrushes, textures, etc.).

Indeed they are. One is a lap cajon I made for a friend in a wheelchair. The other is based on a firebox cajon. I made that one for myself as I really like the design the way it directs sound to the floor. The regular style one turned out fantastic considering it was made out of one of the shittiest pallets I've seen.

  • @NeuM How the bloody hell did I forget Art Set exists? Also, how the bloody hell did I already purchase it, and when? 😂 Bro! Also, both your pieces look amazing! Where have you been hiding this talent, mate?

I also like to dabble with writing (outside of lyric writing that is). Although I haven't written a short story in a fair 5 years, lol. Not exactly my thing, but if it floats your boat, I say "keep going man"!

@DavidEnglish Those photos are incredible works of art in of their own right! What camera(s) and lens(es) do you use?

@Ailerom That's incredible, not gonna lie. Especially when you made a regular cajon out of a shitty pallet. That's craftsmanship if I do say so myself. :)

    B) I want to see some more art by you, @jwmmakerofmusic ... after all, you started this thread! ;)

Yeah, no pressure or anything. 😂 Kidding, kidding, lol. I'm waiting for a client who just commissioned me to get back to me on what she wants (whether she'll describe colours and shapes, or a mood, or whatever), and if she doesn't in the next...37 minutes, well I'll just start a new piece while Facetiming with a friend.

I get image too big whatever I try (I'm down to a 5mb jpg and get "too big!") and weird thing is I, just the other day uploaded to XP4N photo thread without issue. I'll try again later but wanted to say that we have an old art thread somewhere.

Have we gotten a personal limit of uploads? Nah, that can't work ..can it? @wim

Thanks for that. I really enjoy timber work and just creating things that are useful. Even little things like this sheath for my carving knife.

Awesome idea for a thread by the way. :)

I definitely tried to find that first, because I did remember such a thread. But I tried the default DuckDuckGo and the "site:forum.loopypro.com" on Google, to no avail.

Yeah, I forgot if the upload limit is 2mb or 5mb. Hopefully @wim can specify.

A trick I've learned for uploading larger pics is to slightly crop them in the camera roll (I mean very, very slightly). Turns the png into a jpeg and reduces the size magically. 😂

That is amazing work! :) I love that, mate. In many ways I wish we still had Shop Class back when I was a youth. Alas, they did away with that before I was in highschool.

It's 2 and I'm being stupid, never mind: "I'll Be Bakk" 🤣 soon

    Hmmm, I wonder if @Michael @wim @thesoundtestroom and @yellow_eyez can bump that upload limit to 5mb. 😗🎶

  • Sometime I get carried away doing these stupid characters. It's good fun though. (No need to change the limit imo, Jim)

Actually that's not stupid. That's creative and imaginative and pretty damn cool. :) Can't wait to see more like that from you, mate.

    (Fair enough, lol.)

Most of the photos were shot with Leica cameras and lenses. They are directly related to the 35 guest posts that Leica asked me to write for the company's website from 2010 through 2017. I'm a freelance technology writer, so it was a great chance to try out some impressive gear.

    You should post something!

  • @Pxlhg That next piece is even more incredible! I like the details from the cables hooking up to the man's head like Matrix to the brain with the flowers growing and the tattoos and everything. What the hell that is so amazing! Hopefully @echoopera sees it, is flattered, and then admits he too is a visual artist! 😂

    @abf I'm with @NeuM . You should post something too, mate. :)

@DavidEnglish You're such a lucky ducky! I showed my friend Anja your site, and her mind was blown!

  • Okay, next piece of Abstract art with oil pastels on mixed media paper. ❤️ Did this while on videochat with Anja.
