iPadOS 26 Thread

Well, I can't help myself sometimes, so I went ahead and installed the public beta of iPadOS 26 on my iPad yesterday (iPad Pro M1). So far no troubles to report with Note, Loopy Pro, Logic or AUM. But I thought I'd start a thread where folks can track if they run into any glitches.

The UI feels rough around the edges, so I'll repeat the standard disclaimer that you should not install this beta if you're doing important production work on your iPad. And I honestly think that five years from now we're all gonna be like "hey, remember liquid glass?" with an eyeroll. The new windowing system is an improvement however.

  • By the way, I used iMazing to back up my iPad before doing this, and you should consider it too if you're thinking about trying it.

  • For now, the main app incompatible with iOS 26 is Patterning 3; most others work well.

Good tip. Yep, P3 crashes on launch for me in standalone or AUv3 mode.

  • By the way, if anyone is wondering, yes, the UI is slower on my M1 iPad than iOS 18, and it seems to be running hotter. No doubt this is somewhat attributable to the fact that it's a beta, and betas always run a bit hotter than the final release. But also, no doubt iOS 26 will challenge older SoCs. I'm kind of hoping there's a way to disable a lot of the liquid glass eye candy (there might be, I haven't looked for one yet).

That's already fixed in the latest P3 beta :sunglasses:

Cheers! Yep, fires up just fine for me in iPadOD 26 beta now.

  • Love the idea @mjm1138

Interested to see what happens. Cheers!

    Quite OK actually...

I'd rather spend the time using the apps I have instead of talking about them...
...on that note I've not bought many apps this year as there's not been that much worth buying.
(I'm counting a whopping 5 actual purchases of 24 app-store downloads this year).

I've also spent more time on sending feedback to developer rather than venting about stuff that doesn't working in forums ;)

As for apps and stuff in general, I look forward to iPadOS26 and updates to existing apps.

    Cheers!

  • So is it worth downloading the beta at this point, do you think, in order to try it out? For example, how's the battery usage compared to current iOS?

Even though I am tempted I'll wait for the official release...
...all I know is that performance should not be judged directly after install since iPadOS does a LOT of house-keeping (re-indexing etc.) during the first few days post install.

  • Hi IpadOS26 Beta-User, :)
Is there a significant update/ improvement of the stage manager (multi screen use) in IpadOS26? Could not find Infos about that…
THX, Cheers and always happy music making 😎🤩

This is true. My iPad is not running so hot now as it was right after I installed the beta.

That said, @Michael_R_Grant in my experience running an iOS beta will pretty much always use more battery than the GA release, and will pretty much always have more bugs and incompatibilities. So far everything seems to be working for me, especially now that P3 is patched, but I couldn't in good conscience recommend running the beta unless you feel you're well-aware of, and tolerant of, the risks.

  • So I've given it a go and am definitely liking it so far. The multitasking is so much better than before!

  • Very much like iOS 26 and iPadOS 26. Just wish files app had audio preview in place. But still generally pleased.

  • I like the new multitasking for the most part, it’s definitely an improvement. But the new design language is just bouncing right off of me, especially in macOS. It’s just aqua 2.0, but it feels dumbed-down. Duplo-ified. I’m sure there’ll be iterations before it hits GA, so I’ll reserve final judgement, but so far I’m not impressed with the aesthetic.

  • I got bored and decided to install iPadOS 26 (beta 4). I figured it might be worth the risks...
Well, it got stuck on the iPad reboot after the install. The Apple Logo just stayed and stayed.

So I looked for recovery advice and took those steps as detailed in this video:

It seems to take 1 1/2 hours before the Apple Logo disappears and the "recovery page"
appears. I tried the "self" recovery and that fails.

I got my MacBook Air connected and at first it did NOT recognize the iPad in the finder
even with the recovery page loaded.

But today the MacBook recognized the iPad and failed telling me to update my MackBoo OS
so I'm do that. I'm about 3 hours into a download of this new 8GB MacBook OS. The iPad is standing by
with a nice fresh recovery page that loaded after about 1 1/2 hours.

Hopefully, I will get the new OS on the Mac.
It will recognize the iPad and "download" an install image for the iPad and I can install it.

Then I will have days of fun re-installing all my apps. Of course, the OS may install and
protect my data. That would be nice. I opted for the 2TB iPad and it's about 50% full...
    25% with Decent Sampler instruments.

I have contacted Apple Support and have an appointment at the Apple Store tomorrow
in case it needs a factory refresh or the Geniuses at the Apple Store have a more expedited
process that customers don't have access to.

I will update as my adventure continues. This is how I learn best. I break shit and learn how to
put things back together. Good times.

Must've been interesting when you learned to drive. 😉

But I only broke speed limit laws in general. In California the ticket only jumps in price for 20 miles in excess of the posted limit so most freeway traffic stabilizes around 80 MPH with a posted speed of 65 MPH. Anyone that insist on driving the speed limit actually creates more risk for themselves and the cars nearby, IMHO. But the law is the law. It's the enforcement that drives behaviors.

Right now, all the enforcement in the US seems to be focused on identity: "Show me your papers." They have put $150B behind shifting the make up of society. It's not pretty when the dominant group starts slipping in the stats.

Insurance covers a multitude of sins but they still charge enough to compensate for accidents and legal consequences.

Back tp the topic at hand: Beware of iPad OS 26 (Beta 4)... you may loose more than Patterning 3 compatibility.

I needed to update my MacBook to support the recovery of the iPad. After the update to macOS sequoia 15.6 I attempted to recover the iPad. When the iPad was detected on a USB cable I authorized the recovery. The Mac started to download an os image from Apple and failed with an error that I will paraphrase:

"The update required for this iPad is not currently available."

I suspect the iPad has asked for an iPadOS 26 image... I'll learn more at the Apple Store in the morning. I love visiting the Apple Store. All I need is a "valid business reason" and this is a doozy.

I could be there for hours

  • Good help from the Genius Bar helper.

I arrived with the iPad displaying the recovery screen (which saves potentially 90 minutes).
She connected the iPad with a USB-C cable to a store Mac but her next steps was something I did not try.

Even with the display screen displayed she performed the 3 button recovery steps:
Top volume button clicked (from a portrait mode perspective)
    Bottom volume button clicked
Top edge button hold until the MacBook popped up a connection message to re-install the iPad.

That MacBook did not have the correct image preloaded so she asked if she could connect to a server
back stage to save the 9GB download of the image. I said OK and she disappeared for ~20 minutes
and returned with a freshly installed iPasd for me to register with my App Store credentials.

It then showed a had a valid iCloud Backup from 8/18… so I only lost some Notes I took yesterday on the
restore process but those notes still appear on my iPhone so they will reappear in the iPad at some point in the recovery/sync fir any app with shared data across devices.

I had 20 minutes to survey all the updated products and nothing jumped out at me. The new iPad is only 0.3 inches larger
and I would appreciate something more in the 15 inch range like the largest MacBooks.

Now that I know the restore process I might try another iPadOS 26 install…

At this point I have 34GB restored of my 1TB backup.

I don’t know if it’s particular to the 26 beta, but Audio Damage Dubstation 2 has become very unstable for me, to the point of unusability unfortunately. Dubstation has long been my go-to quick and dirty delay, so it’s a bummer!

Edit: Okay I’ve retested on the latest beta and things seem happy again. Hopefully just a little OS bug that got squashed.

  • My iPad is back… the restore from an iCloud back-up taken 2 days before I bricked it with the iPadOS
26 public beta 4 has finished downloading 777GB of mostly musical apps and data. I learned a lot
and am tempted to try another install. May when they drop a newer release.

I have a question: is the developer release more or less likely to give me grief. Any guesses appreciated.
I think I can recover without needing help but that Apple Store visit did serve to get me an iPhone update from the AT&T store strategically located next to the Apple Store. The new iPhone would not
transfer it’s contents to the new iPhone so I installed and then started adding purchased apps as I wanted to use them. What seems weird is that an installed app also gets my data possibly from an
iCloud back up or maybe the data came from the older iPhone… I’m not sure.

I kept the older iphone and didn’t take the very small cash value so I may end up with something that can run NS2 or another abandon-ware app in the future.

  • Time to revive the thread as tomorrow on the 15th of September iPadOS26 gets released to the public...

As usual I'll go 'all in' when it drops (around 7-8pm local time in Sweden) and I don't really expect to bump into any major issues, have not heard about anything alarming to be honest.

Unless there something gets really messed beyond any logical reason I'll likely stay quiet after the install :sunglasses:

  • How is the iOS 26 experience with an external monitor? I tried with iOS 18 and it was honestly meh, I was hoping for something more with the new "everything is a window" experience but I don't have much hope.
