Sorry @LuisMartinez - I understand why the subscription model seems the best model for you. However, no amount of features will ever get me to pay subscriptions for individual apps such as this. It's not about the money, it's about the un-manageability of potentially dozens of subscriptions piling up. That's all I'll say about it, and I only do so in the spirit of constructive marketing feedback.

I wish you the best of success though. Congratulations on the release.

  • Yes, I daresay the AUv3 will be a subscription "feature" addition to the other Lumbeat apps.

If it's an AUv3 app then thats what is it, there should be NO payment other than initial purchase. Adding a subs base for additional drum sets or even beat-sets is fine, but the TYPE of app should remain intrinsic and not subject to recurring and increasing fees.

I don't agree with that at all. Developers deserve compensation for all improvements they invest time into making. The time they spend adding AUv3 capability to apps is no less valuable than the time spent adding any other feature ... and in the case of porting to AUv3 the time required is far more substantial than most features.

If I buy an IAA / Standalone app and use it for years. I'm not entitled to benefit from months of work to add a new technology for free just because I decide the change in technology is important to me.

That said. I will gladly pay one-time for AUv3 additions. Subscription? Never.

I agree, but in-app purchases are meant for that. Subscriptions are the last breath of capitalism before suffocating its most loyal supporters

  • Why not offer a one-time purchase at a price that reflects the development effort, in-app purchases for those who want to buy on demand, and finally subscriptions for those who prefer to stay automatically up to date?

we'll agree to disagree then! Charge for the initial app by all means to recoup costs, but an intrinsic part of the app IE the AUv3 "type" of app, should be included in that purchase.

Once other developers get wind of this working for Lumbeat, they will all start charging a subscription JUST to have Auv3 compatibility

Quotes by mistake , I misunderstood
    Sorry

  • This is the end of the story for me. I never do subs. Never.
Glad I paid for DPP and its kits.

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall that in the early days of AUv3 Apple would not approve AU support sold as IAP? I guess in the spirit of not allowing next iOS version support to be sold as IAP.

@wim "I 'm not entitled to benefit from months of work to add a new technology for free just because I decide the change in technology is important to me."

Not saying it should be free at all!! If you read my posts from the past I have encouraged Martinez to indeed charge for the new Auv3 tech in any new apps he creates or older ones he "re-invents".

It's an AUv3 app...the AUv3 part should be included in the purchase price, NOT the subscription price.

Ergo, charge an upfront cost, say $50, for the basic app WITH AUv3, and then add the subs for the other things I mentioned earlier.

Then I misunderstood you. Just so I understand, how would you expect to pay for it then for an existing drummer app, a one-time IAP?

Great point. Great example: MiRack. Came out with certain auv3 compatibility after release, one time purchase option, had no problem paying for it. But this sub for auv3 usage, big no from me. If they made a similar option for a one time purchase to unlock auv3, even if it’s on every drummer, I’d have no problem paying for it. But subscribing for features is such a turn off for me…

  • I hate commenting on app pricing as think it is up to the developer what they charge for their work. I was really looking forward to AUv3 Lumbeat drummers but I won't be subscribing. I don't do subscriptions. I'd pay a high price for either refreshed apps, new AUv3 enabled apps or for IAP to enable AUv3 in existing apps but subscribe? Nah, not for me.

Hope it gets a lifetime option so I buy, but do think the idea of a centralised app with additional drummers, rhythms, styles, time signatures, AUv3 functionality etc as IAP that could be continually expanded sounds like a great idea too. But, as I prefaced, only the developer knows what will work best across the whole user base, rather than just pleasing us subscription-haters 🤣

For any of the existing Lumbeat apps, for the inclusion of AUv3, yeah I'd reckon $50 "one-off" fee is fair (after all, it is ostensibly a new app) THEN add a subs based model for any future drum kits, feature updates, beat packs etc etc

  • As of now You can export midi without subscription.

It’s a tricky topic. I want developers and development to thrive, but I also want affordability, and value.

I mean, it’s hard out here for a pimp. I have no disposable income, so adding another recurring payment can be hard to justify. That said I want developers to make their “nut” - recent South Park reference. Lol.

  • For me, the best "sub" model is the one used by Loopy Pro.

  • edited September 2025

Having said all that though, it does sound very good, with good kits and beats, albeit you only get two of each without a subscription.

Goran Grooves I suspect is behind all the kits and beats, I have all their premium packs for the Beatbuddy hardware drum unit. About to get the new BeatBuddy 2, so perhaps all this is moot, hahaha!

Kinda wish they announced the subscription model when they announced the auv3. Was highly anticipated, now completely underwhelmed…
Does this mean all the other drummers are switching to sub too?

    +1 000 000

  • I have most of the Lumbeat apps (purchased gradually over a few years), and I really like them, and they offer some great features that other drum apps (and I have a lot) don't deliver for me on iPad. I'm going to have to watch some videos from people that have the full version to be able to decide if it's worth purchasing as a subscription. I don't like subscriptions, but I will accept them if they provide: (1) Value for the monthly/yearly cost up front, (2) Deliver additional value over time, (3) Offer something unique and powerful and so deep that I might prefer the subscription over a big up front permanent cost, because it might take months to evaluate it in my workflow. Bottom line is that I need to get the value out of it quickly and at the end of a year, say, also feel like what I gained was worth the cost if I decide to drop it. It can work for me, but it has to be really compelling for me to buy in.

  • Congratulations on your app release @LuisMartinez
Praying the Lord blesses you for all your hard work!
Thank you also for allowing certain parts of the app to remain accessible and for that I rated it 5 stars on appstore!

Also, regarding subs could a Loopy Pro style of subscription still benefit you? Or a hybrid where both are available? Not an expert in this kind of things but I really wish you to get blessed financially for all your great work just like Michael and Loopy Pro. <3 o:) :#

  • Just to clarify, since people mention the Loopy Pro model as a subscription. Loopy Pro is not subscription. When you purchase a license, there are no future payments required. The app is yours. You get any features added in the following year free and can use them without ever paying anything more.

If additional paid features are added after 12 months, you can get them by purchasing an upgrade IAP if you want those features.

It isn’t subscription. No payment is needed to use features you have unlocked.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I’ve got a few of these, and they’re great apps, but subs for apps are a no-go for me, and I eventually cancelled my Logic sub.

My life is filled with online accounts, passwords, services, etc. etc. all constantly changing, and I honestly don’t have the time and headspace to manage a heap of separate app subs as well.

I’d happily pay for an AUv3 IAP however.

As would we all I suspect, but Martinez has decided against that and made it a sub.

Indeed, IIRC, going back over the past couple of years, users have constantly stated they'd be happy to pay for an AUv3 upgrade (and although not clearly stated, I would suggest as an IAP, not a sub).

This release seems to fly in the face of that.

  • I’m not a cash cow, sorry.

  • @FizzyLizzy27 said:
$48/year is what shows as the non discount sub price. That’s $2 shy of Logic Pro which comes with session drummers.

I imagine I’ll get this one when the IAP is available but if every new Lumbeat app after this is the same price I’ll have to start picking and choosing which ones to get.

This is the logic that will probably keep me from subscribing.

That said, I appreciate the effort and moving to AUV3, I just can’t stomach that price.
