New FX Plugin - TAPESCAM Lo-fi Distortion and Tape Simulator (Released)

Hi! After Punchline, I've released my second audio app, TAPESCAM.

It's a Tape FX plugin loosely based on the classic TASCAM 424 4-track op-amp gain stage, but with a little more vibe-iness.

It includes:

  • Blooming gain from gentle warmth to searing distortion
  • Color for subtle shaping
  • Wow/Flutter for movement
  • Classic hiss and dropouts, with age and tape speed modifiers
  • A close-to-blown-out EQ for tone adjustments
  • Automatic gain compensation just like your shitty walkman had

Put it all together and you get a straightforward to use, gnarly sounding tape distortion.

This one is available for iOS AUv3 (https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/tapescam/id6755081319) as well as Mac VST/AU (https://store.charles.pizza/l/tapescam)

Hear some demos and find out more at https://charles.pizza/apps/tapescam/

Hope you like it!

Look super interesting! I wish it had a little background cassette or image of portastudio tracker for nostalgia sake. I owned one of the original tascam units and remember taking it back when I saw the huge Tascam 688.

I def see myself putting this little app on my hybrid guitar pedalboard!

I pulled from my own nostalgia for this one ;)

Dude, Oh wow, that's awesome man! Yep that's the one! I actually remember what a great feeling it was to finally be able to record our band on a cassette! I ended up returning it to guitar center and actually got a Zoom effects unit! The dude was doing a demo live and I instantly bought it! I did later get a used Tascam 688! It was so worth it! I regret selling it.

    Intabought! <3

  • I had a 424. Probably was my most productive period as a "recording artist." A $150 guitar, a POD and DL-4, and the Tascam.

    Then I discovered synths.

  • Nice !!! Still use my Tascam 424

  • Congratulations @charlesv really cool stuff

  • Is this an intro price @charlesv $2.99?

  • Nice… are the parameters exposed?

  • Bought it, I've tried it only for 5 minutes, but it's fire !
1 stupid question though @charlesv , what do you mean by "Automatic gain compensation" ? Cause if I push the drive to the max, even if the output knob is to the minimum, the volume is still louder than the original sound.

  • Totally worth every penny!

Love the humor. Consider making some high end tape recorder simulations. There really aren't enough of those.

  • $3 is an instabuy for me.

    It's just the price!

The gain compensation is basically is a very slow, lo-fi compression at the end of the chain - it tries to raise the max detected volume level, including the hiss/noise source with a very slow envelope.

And not a stupid question: the signal chain puts the output before the gain compensator. The intention was to try to tame some of the signal going into it, but you're right, it's a little confusing, and I'm actually going to push an update shortly to put it at the end of chain where I think it's expected.

With the output at the end, you can pump the drive and adjust your bypassed and wet signals, in case you're using it in a live setting and need to match levels (the DSP for this runs on the Daisy Seed hardware platform so it can be used as a guitar pedal too )

    Yes, they're all automatable

  • @charlesv
sounds really fat and good :) thank you.

only one issue / bug?! here:
when pumped, if moving wow&flutter at start btw 0 and 1st line
    it produces some strange clicks/pops.

    hope it's fixable.

  • I was watching a video about Mk.Gee using a Tascam for his guitar tone, and then this pops up.👌

  • Looks awesome @charlesv
    Great work!
    Great price too!

  • This is great... Pairs beautifully with Audiothing Wurly. I bought Saturn 2 in the BF Friday sales and have spent loads more time playing with this! As noted does need a way to better control output! Drive at 1 o'clock and output at zero was adding about 12db.... Sounds SICK tho.

  • i get the tape part. what's the scam?

    Tascam…tape…scam

Mostly, it’s not a real tape or an accurate simulation, it’s just what (I think) sounds good

1.0.1 is now rolling out with the output routing adjustment, too!

  • I like it. To my (admittedly worthless) ear it gets a different sound than many of these type of apps. I also had a 424 so maybe some long lost memory is getting stirred. 😎✌🏼

  • This app is totally amazing!
Been having so much fun with it applying it to drums! Oh wow, it truly does amazing sonic sauce man!

    It's just the price!

Right on. Just wanted to confirm that for myself but also so I knew whether to mention intro sale in the 2025 App Sales thread. Cheers! And congrats on Number 2!
