Exciting tape recorder style Daw, possibly coming to iOS!

I was a little disappointed that portatron doesn’t seem to be coming to iOS, but out of the blue this appeared on the Hainbach subreddit. In the comments, the dev expressed interest in developing for iOS! Could be very interesting!!

  • Just as I was researching on how to make a tape recorder style template on Cubasis 3. Fingers crossed!

  • Would this, in essence, work similar to the tape feature on the OP-1/OP-1 Field? If so, I want to beta test this. It's rare these days I beta test anything outside of what I already test.

  • Not sure at all, but I think yes. It's supposed to emulate a multi track tape recorder!

Nice! This one will be an instabuy for me if it comes to iPad! I liked working that way on the OP-1 Field when I had one.

  • I’d like to see this on my iPad! 😎✌🏼

  • I would absolutely buy this.

The developer just posted on Reddit that he's looking for iPad beta testers for this one. @jwmmakerofmusic , this is your chance!

Fingers crossed this will be compatible with my older iPad Pro, forever stuck in iPadOS 17.7.10...

Cheers mate, but unfortunately I can't view it without joining Reddit.

I'm not one for joining new social media if I don't have to. 😅 Maybe convince the dev(s) to come here?

HI Everyone, glad y'all are finding this as fun of an idea as myself! I'd love for anyone here to test drive it for iPad if you are willing. Here's the beta link: https://testflight.apple.com/join/Q76VVGJM

This new iPad version has tons of new features like built in software instruments I made as well as effects like spring reverb, tape delays etc. Also new functions like being able to record in reverse, zoom in on the tape waveforms, and various tweaks. If you'd like to test it for Mac or Windows please let me know and I can send out keys. I should have this new big update ready for mac and windows within the next day or so once I confirm internal testing.

  • @GulfCoastSynthesis I may be dense, but is there a manual anywhere I can read? :)

I have one available for a previous version but its very basic and doesn't include a lot of the new features. I should have an updated version soon esp one for the iPad:

Thanks mate. Can't wait to test this out over the weekend. Meanwhile I will "rtfm" and familiarize myself with what's there. Can't wait to make Ambient and such with this. 😃

  • Wow, @GulfCoastSynthesis, Thank you for building the iOS Version also,
For all multitrack fans, this is an amazing tool!

I was already testing the Mac Version and flashed bei the simplicity, sound! and creativity booster.
The new features are a big plus also.

    Happy testing everyone ;-)

Signed up and installed, but will have to wait until after work to play with it! Do you think to use auv3 instruments I'll need a loopback soundcard or 2 devices?

You should be able to select / route any multi track input as destination for your instrument in the Model8 instrument dialog.

I'm debating allowing third party plugin support for the iPad version because it can get complicated very quickly. If users load faulty plugins and cause crashes then the app can get bad reviews - that's a big reason why I built in all of the software instruments and effects but I'm looking into adding at least for testing.

  • This sounds really exciting! Will be following this one!

Honestly, I think most people on here at least will expect, or at least want auv3 third party app support, it would certainly open things up, but I understand that it could be complicated for you.

Perhaps another way around it would be to make your DAW an auv3 'effect' that could be loaded into something like AUM, but that accepts audio-in for recording other instruments.

I don't know if you know Koala sampler, but it acts like that. It has it's own in built synths and effects and workflow that makes it a full DAW, but you can load it as an effect so you can sample other plugins easily.

I've had a play around inside your app, and it seems really cool, i love the tactility ( is that a word?) with you being able to physically manipulate the tape and the all-round retro vibe and sound.

I'm waiting for a USB dongle so I can connect my midi keyboard to my ipad and have a proper play with the included instruments.

  • I’ve got my guitar going through sounding nice with the built in compressor and reverb, how do you get the drum machine to play?

Nice! For the drum machine you need to click the Off button to turn it on - if DAW sync is on though it will only play when transport is playing - also make sure the drum machine is routed to a channel input and that input is set to monitor

Sorry, new question, I tried changing the bpm in the settings/metronome menu but it doesn’t seem to stick, resetting to 120 I think instantly, that might not be the right spot though I guess?

Can you try adding custom samples to the drum machine - curious if that aspect works for you. Thanks!

Doesn’t seem to change the sound, still displays ‘load’ after you select a file from the browser…

Okay awesome thank you, this is a known bug - it works on my end but another user had the same issue. I'm going to push an update for this and others that will auto update onto test flight today or tomorrow.

  • Also curious what people think of the alternative UIs I added - I added minimal dark mode and light mode for people who may not dig skeuomorphism...
