Cheers for sharing @egobeats
And, in case anyone's wondering, opening with the "suitcase piano" preset is a totally unrelated coincidence with the recent release of a fabulous electric piano app
These previews are from a demo video for the synth I did last week. And in fact, that actual preset (even the name) and synth design itself goes back to something I did 2023. So there you go.
I did honestly think about changing the demo, but then I figured it was kinda funny. I sincerely hope @AnalogMatthew would agree
Anyhoo, just to also let you know the app is currently awaiting review...
Great demo as always! I have plans for the metallic wood preset!
Nice! You’re too good to us @Rob_Jackson_Music 🫶
That sounds fab Rob. MPE please!
Cheers @Gavinski, much appreciated! Don't want to get too into the weeds ahead of release, but...
v1.0 supports channel / mono aftertouch as a modulation source / modifier.
v1.1 (or probably v1.2) will support polyphonic aftertouch.
So not proper MPE I'm afraid, but should definitely open up another interesting dimension of expression.
If I may say so myself, you can already do some pretty interesting stuff with the built-in modulation capabilities and a bog-standard velocity-sensitive keyboard. In fact, there's a little trick you can do even if your keyboard isn't velocity-sensitive...
And there I go, into the weeds...
Thnx Rob. Would it be fairly easy to add per note pitch bend?
Yeah... I think it would totally make sense to also capture pitch bend messages at the channel / note level when in "Poly AT" mode, so I'll make sure that's done as part of supporting polyphonic aftertouch.
Thanks for the suggestion, as I hadn't really thought about doing that!
Note that MPE uses channel aftertouch, not poly AT. So it would make sense to pair channel aftertouch and per note pitch bend.
Quote from no less an authority than Roger Linn:
"The official MPE specification states that the message used for finger pressure is Channel Pressure."
Bloody confusing terminology!
Yeah, totally get you @Gavinski, I think we're on the same page, dare I say channel?
It also doesn't help when Google AI Overview spits out stuff like this...
Monophonic (channel) aftertouch applies pressure modulation globally to all held notes simultaneously, whereas polyphonic aftertouch allows for independent, individual pressure control over each key.
So the way I'll do it under the hood is that when a note comes in, it gets assigned to a voice and I'll remember which MIDI channel it came in on. So if a pitch bend or AT messages comes in on the same MIDI channel, I know which voice to target with that message value in "poly AT" mode. Where as in "mono AT" mode (as implemented in v1.0) all voices get the same aftertouch and pitchbend message.
I think that there's a general convention that channel 1 is a global thing, and 2 to whatever are your notes / voices.
Hope that makes sense. If it doesn't, be good to thrash it out if you're willing before I start prompting AI code generators...
Just kidding. ANALOGy8 was 100% made with below average, but real intelligence
Ack, I only know a little bit about mpe, you'll have to dig into the muck yourself, glad you're up for trying tho!
Sounds great to me!
It would be funny if all new app releases started with suitcase piano presets 😆
Sounds great!
Is it weird that there's this little nagging something inside me that's a tiny bit annoyed with myself for always grabbing every one of Rob's apps? 😂
I also came to say ... I love the font used in those videos.
Omg right?! It’s just banger after banger, so annoying…. 🙄
Not only does the synth sound great, the reverb is gorgeous. Is the reverb part of ANALOGy 8?
@abf - sure is.
Thanks folks. iOS version has just been approved - iPad / macOS only initially I'm afraid as the UI is a little more complex...
congrats @Rob_Jackson_Music
Oh yum. This is sounding right up my alley hole!
Hi Folks. If you're free 8pm GMT tonight (Sun) there will be a video premiere of the new synth, ANALOGy8 by Doug on The Sound Test Room YT channel. Hope to see you in the chat!
The app will be available in the App Store when the video goes live. iOS initially, as the macOS version is still awating review.

Just to be clear, it will be a universal purchase for iOS and macOS, but iPhone is currently not supported as there's a lot more going on here in the UI. It scales OK, but I took the view that it isn't really usuable scaled down to that size. Sorry if you're iPhone only.
I'll be ready!! I'm eager to see it!
Awesome, thanks for the heads up @Rob_Jackson_Music
Rob just posted a new video showing the UI, very cool!
We got dials!!!!!
App Store link, iOS (iPad) only at the moment, macOS will hopefully get through soon.

@egobeats - any chance of editing the subject to include "released" please?
Overview
ANALOGy8 is an 8 voice polyphonic, or mono virtual analog synthesizer. Each voice has 3 variable shape oscillators with wave folding, plus a noise source. There are independent amplitude envelopes and velocity-sensitivity for all 3 oscillators and the noise source. This is slightly unusual, and can be used very creatively when designing sounds.
The filter stage comprises two independent variable mode filters per voice, with two and four pole variations of lowpass, bandpass and highpass ladder filters, with drive / saturation. Filter cutoff can also be modulated with velocity. Each filter has its own ADSR envelope. Each oscillator and noise source can be routed to different filters independently, or bypass the filter stage completely. This is another slight departure from typical synth designs.
There are four independent modulation sources per voice. Each source comprises a variable shape LFO with its own ASR envelope. LFOs can be sync’d to host tempo or set to drift in an “analog-ee” way. LFOs can also be switched off allowing the modulation source to be used as a simple ASR envelope.
Modulation sources can be assigned to 22 voice parameters - 1 mod source per parameter. For example, mod source 3 could be assigned to the pitch of oscillator 2 and the cutoff of filter 1, and so on. As modulation occurs independently for each voice (i.e individual played notes), the modulation capabilities of ANALOGy8 make it an interesting choice for anyone who likes evolving, or even slightly unpredictable sounds and textures.
The effects section includes an analog-flavoured delay with host tempo sync option, a variable size reverb and a compressor / limiter stage.
@Rob_Jackson_Music I’ve edited it Rob
From the video demo there's a lushness to the sound ... not too dissimilar to the lushness of Continua.
Thanks @thesoundtestroom - loved the video earlier.
Cheers @craftycurate ! Continua is an amazing app - I love it.
I like to think the modulation options play a big part in that. If you turn off the mod sources in any of my factory presets, the sound goes incredibly bland and one-dimensional to my ears
Sounds great ! It will be perfect t for Synthwave music.
@robjackson no iphone?
From @Rob_Jackson_Music: “Just to be clear, it will be a universal purchase for iOS and macOS, but iPhone is currently not supported as there's a lot more going on here in the UI. It scales OK, but I took the view that it isn't really usuable scaled down to that size. Sorry if you're iPhone only.”
Re iPhone,
It runs fine and scales reasonably well, but I just found this way too fiddly from a usability perspective. This is on my iPhone 15 Pro.
I think it would need a dedicated iPhone UI / layout to be honest which I just don't have the bandwidth to do right now.
Hopefully I'll be able to get to it at some point.
Also while I'm here, there's a known issue with the LFO Rate on the MOD 3 modulation source which will be fixed in the v1.1 update coming "soon", or probably not so soon, given the speed of App Store reviews right now...
That update will also have another 25 factory presets.
Cheers for now, and thanks so much to everyone who's bought or expressed interest in ANALOGy8!
Just from what i see in demo you can easily release this also on iphone - UI is scalable, the format you picked (aspect ratio of plugin) would work perfectly on iPhone too in my opionion in landscape mode .. don't underestimate our iPhone fanatics how tiny knobs we can accept as totally OK UI
I am 100% sre this will be pretty comfortably controllable on iphone
i would love to have this baby on my iPhone
