FM4 Out Now!

edited December 2014 in General App Discussion

https://itunes.apple.com/app/id910545680?mt=8

By Primal Audio
Only $1USD for December

DISCLAIMER: MIDI is not working. Apple is currently reviewing an updated version that addresses this and other minor issues, which will be available next week.

FM4 is a four operator FM synthesizer for iPad. Modelled on the popular DX series from the 1980s FM4 provides the same gritty sound, with a modern interface, and without being bound by the limitations of the original units.

Every aspect of the hardware — from envelope curves to sine-table sizes and quantisation errors to digital-to-analogue converters — has been meticulously analysed, in order to recreate the raw and dirty sound of the original units.

The interface of FM4 has been carefully thought-out and is simple and intuitive, yet powerful — with every parameter being available on a single page. No menus, tabs, or jumping from page to page.

FM4 is capable of producing a multitude of sounds, ranging from punchy basses, crystal-clear bells, and lush pads, to organic textures, striking drums, and piercing leads.

Features:
Four operators configurable in eight different routings
Three sound engines modelled on 1980s hardware units
Eight waveforms derived from classic FM synths
2x, 3x, and 4x polyphonic unison
Tempo-syncable arpeggiator with up, down, up-down, and random patterns
Microtuning with eight different temperaments
Supports Inter-App Audio, background audio, and MIDI over bluetooth (support for Audiobus is coming)
Up to 24 voices of polyphony
Presets can be imported/exported through iTunes

  • I tested it for a while and it's my favorite FM synth now.I don't need a gazillion of Multistage envelopes etc,But i definitely need the dirty, gritty sound this one creates! All other (FM) Softsynth i know are just to clean for my taste.

  • ^ how fast/quick/"snappy" are the envelopes? i.e., does FM4 do percussive sounds well?

also, can the keyboard be constrained to particular scales?

What? Like you're not gonna buy it? =P

  • Awesome! I just sprung for some Korg items and Photophore yesterday, but then happily remembered that this is 99 cents.

MIDI not working at all?! Well, at least they got out in front of it - sounds like it will be corrected by next week or so. AudioBus would be nice too, but we'll have to wait a little.

Saw Doug's preview video, but I don't recall - bunch of presets for this one? At least it looks pretty friendly to program.

  • Wow fastest buy ever! 5 seconds after reading this thread!

  • The first time I downloaded it would not open up without an immediate crash and I could not even try it. I did a reset but no go so I just deleted and am trying again.

  • still a no go, it shows the splash screen and then disappears. It also shows that it is in the background, but as soon as I touch it to bring it up it crashes yet again.

  • All I can figure is the corrupted version somehow went to the cloud so when I redownload it still will not launch! I am running out of things to try here any ideas?

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This beast has Bass from hell.

It has good list of presets under two banks (Bank A & B).

A very simple interface on a single page.

  • so why can I not get it to launch??

ha! but yes, that's the point. i have a depressingly long list of apps that I just never use and that list...well, depresses me. I don't want to add to it. I only want to buy apps that I will actually use or that are actually nice/make sense to use on a touch screen.

  • Excellent! An early Xmas present to myself

    @Tritonman2 maybe it's a network issue?
Did you try downloading to PC and installing via ITunes (blahhh i know)

  • not yet but I just downloaded a free app and that worked just fine

  • Maybe hardware issue. I have IPad3.

  • Original ipad mini here. ios 7.0

  • Works fine on my iPad Mini (iOS8.1.2).

Definitely a new favorite when it comes to FM on the iPad.

I have to say that the presets are pretty inspirational and keep me just playing the darn thing. Sound-wise It feels pretty close to a TX81z but with way better 'factory presets' :)

  • Nice @otem_rellik. :)

Completely off topic but you still use rrarrow? Sorry. It's on sale and I remember seeing a video of using it. And because I have you in consideration and all... :)

Great videos and loving the hard case setup, by the way. Going to copy that one day.

  • I haven't used rrarrow for a bit but I still think it's a really nice app, I'd go for for it if it's on sale. I've pretty much been building custom patches in pure data for all my music needs on the ipad. I have a new one I've been working on that is a midi sequencer with timeline effects (inspired by egoist/effectrix) that I'm really excited about. I'll post it up whenever I finish. But yeah, grab rrarrow for sure, it's a fun one to get lost in.

Back on topic though, this is a great synth! I just ran through a bunch of presets and they sound really nice.

  • Thanks. Keep us posted. Although I will stop by your website.

Working fine here. (ipad air, 8.1.2)

I too have a depressingly long list of neglected apps, but luckily (?) not much in the way of FM synthesis so this was quite welcome to me.

First impressions are very positive. Surprisingly characterful sound quality but also capable of classic cleaner FM tones.

Also a great UI and some interesting tuning temperament options. (werckmeister has to be superior to equal temperament surely.)
The design makes decent use of the touchscreen and it's great to have the programming features laid out nice and clearly on a single page.

From a performance perspective, the touchscreen controls are functional but basic.
For example, there doesn't seem to be the option of constraining notes to scale or the ubiquitous ribbon style controller.

Overall, I think this is excellent so far and I look forward to MIDI being implemented. (and I hope it includes MIDI clock!)

  • Sounds really great!

  • Just added this to my never ending synth app list. Going to try it out when it downloads.
By the way, why is this app (amongst others) quite large (>80Mb) does it contain samples or something that need so much space ?
I know it isn't much, but when you have them all, it adds up quite fast

  • @tritonman2 and @Shay: Yep, insta-crash here on iPad3. @tritonman2, please let me know if you figure it out.

I like to think of it as contributing to the iOS audio ecosystem... Any support we can give to developers will help make this a more viable platform. Even if you don't end up using a particular app, who knows, perhaps the developer's next project will be a must have.

  • Just think of it as a robust library of choices. ;)

  • With Mister @busker on this one.

  • Can't find this on the UK store...
