  • Picked up 2 and left the mini. Can't complain for the price! No, they don't sound analog, but what soft synth does? Best to take these apps on their own terms.

  • btw, where is th promised iMini update? They said it's in review along with Phase84 and iProphet.

In the "Arturia iProphet - out now" thread, Mano/Jay from Retronyms wrote on 16-December that the iMini update was submitted and unfortunately won't be out until after the new year now. As others have suggested, I'll believe it when I see it. I've been waiting for it since September.

  • iSEM's a nice synth, iMini suffers from lack of support and sounds pretty awful on my iPad, nothing like the real thing IMO

Ya, ISEM is not bad I must agree except many of the presets are on the week side for my taste, but a lot of good sound inside with a bit of work. It really is enjoyable over all. but the Iprophet which I managed to hold off on until last week just sounds so wicked pad wise I could no longer resist even given my strong dislike of the retronyms brand. I really expected a possible purchase disappointment and was very happy to start exploring and now find myself going back to it almost daily to reshape sounds with all of the vector settings. It's five bucks ya know? Without a doubt it is worth five bucks even if you could never use it live it just sounds excellent. If it breaks in half I still get to keep both halves, so I really am not able to complain to much without sounding petty, but it is Retronyms , just saying. Their track record is a bit lacking. As far as Imini goes, it too is alright and for five bucks I would not pass this up if I did not already have it, no doubt. I myself do not use it very often at all though just because I have apps that are so much more of a pleasure to use.(Nave, animoog,Sunrizer, and the other usual roundups on the forum/.

  • I read that iprophet is 4 voice which was surprising but i guess you can load stuff up in Nave for more polyphony. I think i'd definitely start with iProphet. iSem seems to have some nice arps.

  • iSEM is sweeeeeeet :)

  • Paid full for Isem a while back, so it's nice to pick up the other 2 for $5/ea. Had a minimoog long ago. Nice to have one back again!

  • I can't make my mind up about iProphet - I like the vector automation between the four oscis, but it's not really grabbing me or making me feel I'd be adding anything unique to my toolbox. It's cheap enough to be tempting, despite the obvious support issues, but I hate buying stuff just because it's in a sale then not using it.

  • Try this , say this is not the app you have been looking for. It's an old jeddi app resistance trick I use.

I believe it's 8 voice on recent iPad models, perhaps someone can confirm? (Got an iPad2 myself which is 4 voice)

  • To me, the question is to spend a little more money and go for Tera. But I'm tempted as well

  • There are so many apps I want now it's getting silly. I think Sparkle might be the next winner, I'm still resisting iProphet though my force is weak...

  • Tera is excellent, once you get into the semi modular routing you can create some huge sounds. But herien lies the problem with ios, so many synths and apps that if you buy them it's hard to find the time to dedicate to each one but it's so hard to resist! I try and be as sure as i can that i will use the app and it won't just be a 5 minute thing. Resist the impulses you must. :P

  • I am so tempted as well as I love vintage synths. But I just fired up Z3TA and it made me realize how deep and amazing it is. Was playing some huge massive strings pads with it that almost brought a tear to my eye, thanking how awesome it is to be alive in this time and age to enjoy this amazing technology. I might get it after all as you guys helped me save some cash by not buying Sampletank packs which are so expensive. Instead I got the Bismark soundfont player. Decisions....the force is getting weaker in me......

Is this a new kickstarter for a wired (midi in, out, thru) Googlesque headset controller, for a new synth - iBorg?

  • I just booted up iMini for a revisit, and what a depressing experience that was. Insisted on being loaded first, otherwise an AB no-show - all patches open at full volume, and even when turned down sound distorted. I had stutters, glitches and crashes despite it being the only app open at the time, until I hit the DELETE button.

I think that's cured any thoughts of buying the iProphet. The force is strong, Monzo, resist the dark apps.

    Sorry to hear that.

Nothing that you mention running iMini + AUFX:Space recording into Audioshare via AB.

Thanks, could all be down to having an older iPad 2 I guess, but they boast iPad 2 compatibility, and iSEM which I would have thought would have used more resources, works absolutely fine - almost no glitches at all. I remember buying them at the same time and thinking that's the one I'd have problems with!

I really like iMini, but totally feel the pain. The one thing that gets me every time is the tempo. Every time you open it is reset to 120. Small thing, but endlessly frustrating!

  • You're right: Forgot mention that: iPad4, iOS 7.1.2

  • ISEM is so easy to program (well, the main synth is- I haven't dug into the 8 voice part yet) that weak presets shouldn't deter you. It's a subtractive synth with some strange deign choices (the 3 stage envelope being one), but spend a few minutes learning it and amazing bass sounds await. The filter on LP/HP combined, edged just a hair off of just low pass works great for bass because it seems to remove the ultra ultra lows, making a nice, deep, punchy, focused sound.

  • I'm still working on the missus for the thumbs up for an air2 in the new year, so maybe I'll be able to reinstall all the stuff that doesn't work at the moment!

Might as well wait to see what the new announcement is by that time. :D

  • Most know but in case someone is Retronyms shy and considering iSem: Retronyms didn't port it—Rolf of Tempo Rubato (Nave, Nlog...) ported that one.

I've always loved the sound of the SEMs so I'm definitely partial to its sound, but like @mrufino1 said, it's really easy to program and you can get a pretty great variety of sounds out of it. For me it really comes alive once mapped to a large set of external knobs and sliders. Very slight tweaks can make a lot of difference. I know it's sorta known for bass but I use it for pads, melodies and weird sounds more than I do for bass.

The voice programmer is a little weird but it's a very cool feature, especially for pads, leads and weird sounds—sorta less so for bass. :) It essentially allows you to make adjustments to each key press. The original SEM was monophonic. Then they made the SEM-2, SEM-4, and the SEM-8. These units still used the same monophonic SEMs for sound generation but it allowed you to group them together into a single poly synth by splitting the voices across each one (or a ginormous mono synth via stacking or, crazy at the time, a split keyboard synth). Anyway, since there was no preset memory, you had to dial each SEM unit to the same settings to get a poly synth. Analog being analog, it was pretty hard to get them all to the same exact settings. On one hand, it was a bitch. On another hand, it made for lively animated sounds. The voice programmer page in iSem aims to help the app perform like the latter. Try some very small envelope or filter adjustments across all 8 and then play a melody—sounds a little more animated then a flat synth tone or fixed automation or a fixed LFO adjusting the same parameters because the steps generally will not align with your melody (or chord shapes) and each pass will be a little different. I love it.

I love it enough that I've considered an iPad 2 dedicated to it.

  • ^ I've always thought the voice programmer was underrated given how awesome it is. like round robin parameter locks!

The bug fix? Apple will be on iPad Air 5 before that comes out!

No wonder it works perfectly! Amazing, it's got tons more features than iMini yet performs ten times better. Nave is a great app too - another 'big' app that still works on an old device.

lol. that's sort of what I was alluding to -- making sure you time the buy right so that you don't end up with an iPad Air X when you could have an iPad Air X^2
