The Zed Synth Pre Release Demo for iPad and iPhone, Super Synth
Here is a quick look at the amazing and brilliant new synth for iOS called Zed from developer Richard Meyer who earlier brought the Patch Morpher app. This synth is capable of some very clever stuff. And it works in both the input and effects slot of Audiobus and also its Inter App Audio.
Full midi learn is also included and will be priced around the $10 mark making it a very affordable synth indeed giving you a lot of bang for your buck.
One of the best features is the ability to process and control any audio being fed into it i.e voice, synths, drum machines, guitars. Letting you then play chords or melody’s with these instruments a bit like a vocoder but with lots more control. This is one seriously good synth. And to boot its also universal for both iPad and iPhone.
At this time of writing we have no firm release date yet.

Great-sounding-synth. It will be the first app I'll buy not on sale! (after AB2!).
@Doug:
Could you try ,on launch video to bypass Zed for hearing the audio source dry? It could help me understand the "vocode" engine easier. (which BTW is a huge addon for a synth). Thank you very much!
Thanks Doug, looks - and sounds - like an insta-buy!
i've already thought of a dozen ways i want to use this
I only scratched the surface, I'd had the synth for like an hour before I made the demo, loads of cool stuff going on in there
Hi folk,
I was really chuffed to see Doug's demo - I'm working on some improvements.
And YES! A wet/dry knob for when the synth is being used as an effect would be worthwhile - I just need to figure out where to put it in the UI.
It's also NOT a vocoder, although it can sound similar in some cases. You're using the external audio to hit or stroke the string resonator. It works particularly well with drum kits as they turn into rhythmic strumming.
Hope to see you guys soon!
Richard.
BTW: The user manual is available online here: http://www.jazzman-ltd.co.uk/zed-synth/user-manual.html
Zed's dead, baby, Zed's dead.
Sorry.
I'm still getting incredible sounds with Zed
I'd love to know how. I'd have thought Marcellus Wallace got all the sounds out of Zed. Maybe "getting medieval" included some funky black magic. Or maybe Butch was just wrong...
...sorry...
Thanks for the video, Doug.
@RikMaxSpeed sounding really good. Is there a quick way to get back to the overview page from the subpages (like, single tap vs scrolling back)?
I was wondering that too, easy to navigate too via the overview but needs a button to get back
"Zed's dead".
Movie dialogue reference, if it got by you its proof that Tarantino's cinema wasnt immortal after all.

Tap the top bar of the section you are in, it will jump back to the overview.
Thing that has me looking forward to this the most is the audio pass thru function, wish more synths would support this, wondering if you can use a usb mic with it. Also like the visual feedback as it can be handy to see the sounds sometimes, can't wait for this to land.
@RikMaxSpeed When?
Looks and sounds great! Instant buy for me but please add optional scales for the keyboard like most of the other top IOS synths.Thanks!
Hard at work - just spent a 4 hours building patches, both synth & audio filters. It works really nicely with some of the other IOS synths, and I was able to create a reasonably credible piano reverb for SampleTank's grand pianos with sympathetic string resonance.
Thanks for the encouragement guys! Hope to submit to Apple after the weekend.
Navigating, well there's a lot to navigate, looks like you could inadvertently change parameters, but really loving the sound and the possible permutations with AudioBus, can't wait to try.
Intro special price maybe?
Wow can't wait for this synth!

Looks like lots of original and exciting stuff in this one - definitely one to watch out for!
@RikMaxSpeed
This looks big and fresh!
Any tests on "older" devices? Ipad 4 here.
This one definitely appeals to more than the Casio app. Nice sounds, RikMaxSpeed. And nice playing, Doug.
iPad 4 is fine. The synth displays how many voices it can achieve on any given patch, and it'll scale back the Spring Box effect if it detects stuttering. You can also disable the 4x oversampling which is fine to do if you're not playing the really high frequencies.
Navigation: there's plenty of space to press & scroll the screen around without touching the controls, and you can tap the current panel's name to jump back to the Overview screen from which you can jump to any other panel. Having spent quite a few hours with this yesterday I can confidently say it works.
I'll work on some more patches & sound demos today!
Very stoked for this! I'm gonna get it anyway since I have an Air 2, but I'm curious, is it usable on devices with the A5 processor such as iPod touch 5G and iPad 2?
@RikMaxSpeed, Nice feedback love the 'meaty' organic sound with your synth, keep up the good work, good to see fresh ideas here on humble iOS.
Looking forward to this one! Anyone know if it has ios7 support?
Sorry, IOS 8 only, mainly because I can't test it on IOS 7.
And here it is running on an iPhone 4S, so an 800MHz A5 dual-core CPU. I typically get 5 voices of polyphony even on patches that use the Spring Box, though I don't think it could do the full 88-string reverb.
The UI is functional too, I have code that adjusts the fonts & graphics to any screen size and resolution, retina or not.
@RikMaxSpeed
I'm saving a spot for this on iPhone and iPad - looks way cool
Any news regarding price & release date?
Looks like a must have for me if it can be made to work well with Guitar audio in. I've been looking for something like this, other than Jam Synth of course, to use with Guitar.
It's submitted according to the dev's blog, (on 28th)...also read that the gui has changed a bit....can't wait....I want it NOW!
