@tritonman I currently dont have my own iPad but my significant other does and is kind enough to let me fiddle with it. A LOT.

    Classic displacement activity :)

  • @aleyas. - 'make me a believer'?

    Believe!

Gadget IMO is one of the best pieces of app design in any genre - not just music making apps.

Just buy it. It's amazing. Even if it does have:

    • no midi out
    • not enough effects capability
    • restricted audio sampling and no proper audio tracks (or iaa in)

Apart from that it's fantastic for, you know, making music on your iPad.

I think I may purchase both module and flux fx this time around. Thought on Auria but will probly just pony up 50 bucks when pro comes out. Does not seem to be much else out of Namm up and coming except maybe roland sound canvas. The price on module is even better than when it originally came out so I think its a good one.

  • How about the IAPs, Matt? Do you recommend them both?

So, ended up buying this. Some might think it insane, but I actually found SunVox more intuitive as far as workflow is concerned. I think I prefer the later as a self contained groove center, as it seems more versatile, whereas much of what I've heard from Gadget sounds kind of samey. I'll try making some ambient music in Gadget though and see if I can mold it to my vision. Glad you guys convinced me though, it is quite fun!

  • I bought module and got the Wurlie IAP, really impressive sounds. The organs are top notch too, just wish they were as tweakable as Gallileo. The piano is good, won't be splurging for the Ivory. The latency with a midi keyboard in Gadget makes it unplayable until you change it in the ipad settings (not in the app itself as I discovered thanks to an old audiobus forum thread). I'm a gadget fan and this just makes it even more seductive.

  • Yes. You have to go into the external settings and change latency setting. Absolutely essential.

Telecharge, the Bilbao and Abu IAPs are, in my opinion, great. I find I'm using them almost more than the synths often. I'm building lots of kits for Abu and using it a bit like Egoist/IMPC but internal to Gadget so you have total control and automation.

If you don't want to bring in (many) of your own samples though, you could probsy get away without them or with just one of them. Depends on how you want to use gadget.

For me, the strength of Gadget is being able to make complete and polished tracks in one app very nicely/easily (bringing sounds from other apps in). You have to 'give yourself over to it' a bit and get used to its way of working. But then it becomes a very efficient and productive way of working.

Agree with this. Is also one of the most accurate descriptions of modern relationships at this point in history.

I'm going to ass-u-me that if you had to pick one it would be Abu?

    Difficult one.

For simply bringing in samples (especially slightly longer ones) and playing them, Bilbao is much better (16 samples of up to 5 sec long and you can automate which part of the sample is played).

If you want to work more like Egoist and have a single break, loop or weird sample (up to 10 secs) you want to slice up and make a cool riff with - then Abu is better (it has beat repeat, an arp and reverse for example - and the xy FX pad is nice).

I think if I had to choose then i'd probably have to go with Bilbao actually because almost everything you can do with Abu you can do with Bilbao if you fiddle around long enough in the sequencer (apart from reversing a sample) and Bilbao gives you longer samples which you can splice back to together to kindof allow a basic audio track (which i've done a fair bit).

It's pretty much 50/50 though. Abu is quicker to play with and more fun.

I'd just get both if they're half price.

  • Cheers, Matt.

  • Let the rather large yet wonderfully large sounding downloading of module begin! Yeah! I just can not get over the great sale. Off to do some more app research while I wait.

I think I'm going to buy gadget today, at $20 it looks really amazing. It also looks like it's very easy to get ideas going. I resisted for a long time because I have caustic, but I can't seen to get a workflow going in it. I'm pretty fast with nanostudio, but everything I do there winds up sounding the same.

You know I try to avoid "appaholism" now but this looks very deep. I was thinking of beat hawk but for me I think that would be fun for a few minutes then join the many "it's only $5" apps that get no use.

Quick question- gadget can now multitrack export, correct? So I could get the tracks into auria easily? That's a total pain with nanostudio.

Don't talk me into it or out of it, just confirm this and enable me...;-)

It looks cool though, and besides, I don't want limits, I want horizons.

    Yes.

Enabled! My current workflow is mostly Gadget into Auria, hope you dig it as well :)

  • Wish I had enough free storage space for Gadget into Auria.

Currently mine is Gadget then a quick master in Audio Mastering. Quick and efficient though.

  • I'm going out to run some errands and will purchase an iTunes card with korg in the gift line...

  • Oh man, this app is fun!

I feel ya, Matt. Just yesterday had to delete a lot of my "nice to have but not currently essential" music apps to reclaim precious disk space.

    @mrufino1 I don't want horizons, I want limits.

Gadget is one of the things that offers them. It's front rank.

    And it's a blast.

And when's your birthday? Ask for Module, fully monty.

  • Think I'm gonna buy module in about an hour.

I won't be able to run or access it yet because I'm on ios7.1 on my Air still. Plus I really don't have enough room until I ship out a load of stuff from AudioShare to Dropbox.

But hey. I can't resist a sale and I can't resist anything Gadget related. Not sure how much I'll use the Module gadgets, but guess I'll see if it was worth spending £15 on some piano patches.

Had Gadget, picked up Module last night just to be able to add a few traditional sounds to Gadget. Can't say there's anything over the top about it, but will work for what I need it for. Disappointed that all of the acoustic pianos (even the dark ones) are a bit bright sounding for my taste. I have more useful piano sound fonts running in Bismark right now. Maybe just me, but Module is barely worth the discount price in my book.

  • @rad3d I like Module very much, but there's no limit to quality and if you've got better choices to hand already then I'm nothing but jealous :)

  • Not complaining, just not as impressed as I expected to be. No better choices in Gadget, but I can always export tracks and replace when I feel I need something different.

  • Yes you really should share these presets for bismark that are better than module. I have found none that come close so far and Ive tried a bunch. I got module last night and must say it is definitely worth every penny. Without a doubt the best pianos for ios to date. Hell I listened to the comparisons of motif, ikmulti and korg and korg was the best I heard .

Definitely not trying to berate the quality of Module. I realize it's perfect for many users, just thought I'd add my view as it isn't for me. No doubt these are quality samples. I'm just looking for a darker sound and was really surprised that every one of these acoustic piano sounds have a high pingy attack that can't be eq'd out with the 3 band eq included. For most, that's a desirable part of the piano sound. I grew up with a 1930s era Steinway Grand in my house, and it just never had that type of attack to it, always a very deep and warm sound with a much softer attack. That sound has just stuck with me.

I think the first day I did a search for piano sound fonts, I ran across a free one called WST44F, which I believe is a set of Steinway samples. Has a nice warm tone that fit what I was looking for, and sits well into my compositions. I got it from one of the more popular free sound font sites, but can't find it right off.

Now, keep in mind, piano is far from my first instrument and I'm not going to pick up on other aspects that are going to be important to a more seasoned player.

All personal preference, though. I was just expecting that the ultimate piano module would have me covered... Still nice to have access to some of these sounds in Gadget.

  • @rad3d good two cents...and thanks for the tip on WST44F.

  • @rad3d Brilliant! I spent 15 minutes on a slew of unknown sites at the edge of greysphere looking, but that saves a lot of uncertainty out walking the edges.

  • I just listened to that soundfont in bs-16i. It's darn good. I can see some use for the soundfont but I find the Module default and Ivory piano samples far richer. For my ears, there's no comparison.

@rad3d, have you tried playing around with the lowpass filter in Module to get that dark sound you're looking for?
