It's a pity the iOS iConfig app doesn't (yet) support the iCA+4. Does anyone have any idea how long we'll have to wait?

Really? That seems... bad. Like, deal breaker bad.

  • All I know is it's being worked on @syrupcore.

  • Good to know, thanks. I'll wait it out. Looks like it's still pre-order everywhere anyway but it'd be pretty much a brick for me until the config app is updated.

@syrupcore I believe the idea is to move away from the "metro" look of the existing iConfig for iOS interface to something that more resembles the desktop versions (so it will likely be iPad only, not iPhone - to accommodate the look and feel appropriately).

I do know that care was given to the desktop versions to get them to work very reliably since the initial focus is to be able to hook up all the gear and record into a DAW. However, I quite understand that many folks here will want to use the iCA4+ without a desktop - and I've gently nudged to mention that need too. :-) I'm with you. :-)

I was involved with the beta testing of the desktop versions as well as of the iCA4+ hardware too, and a lot of work and thought was put in (by the developers) - along with a good amount of feedback from the beta testers - to get the desktop versions out along with the hardware.

I'm glad they're considering reworking the iPad app. It makes me crazy. Since the MIDI4+ supports rtpMIDI I've been happy tweaking from my laptop via wi-fi.

Musicians friend ship date was the 10th (today) but I noticed it is now bumped to the 20th.

And now it's been bumped to the 27th. Wow I gambled and lost on this one. :/

The dmg file of iConfig Version 4.0.3 as downloaded multiple times at http://www.iconnectivity.com/iconnectaudio4plus-software-driver does not work. Mac says "image not recognized". Anyone lucky or got a proper file?

EDIT: Fixed by iConnectivity. Great support!

Btw, picked up the ICA4+ at Thomann today. Working great so far.

  • Oh and why is the volume meter so low during playback? Volume's fine, just the volume meter barely blinks.

  • Try the download now @bedhead. I spoke to the iC folks and I think any issue has now been fixed :-)

  • Also @bedhead - check on page 16 of the manual - it shows the metering and what levels correspond to which LED bars.

  • I can confirm that it's fixed and working nicely. Many thanks!

And yeah @MusicInclusive, i just read that part of the manual. It must be my Yamaha HS8 or their level settings or something. If I try to take it past two bars on the ICA4+ volume meter, my ears are bleeding and the neighbors are freaking out.

  • Always a good idea to calibrate your monitors with a new audio interface @bedhead :-)

  • @MusicInclusive which changes do I have to make in iConfig if I want to use my iPad (connected to USB1) as external signal processor in Ableton Live? I'm getting iPad audio from inputs 5 and 6, but how do i get the audio to the iPad in order to process it and send it back to 5 and 6?

  • edited April 2015

Yes got the ICA4+ today download iConfig....seems to work, and it works with my AKKUPACK!!! Yes...
but...look into the Menus of it and have to look into the manual first or look your vids @musicinclusive....

i am inside electronic since 20years+ but look into it and got a big questionmark.

The pastel colors of the menu bleeding my eyes and told me nothing logical.

    usability?....what is usability...!

But it was just a 20minutes jump into this morning.

    coffeeee

  • @bedhead - that's in the next video I'm preparing (I'm guessing the other videos already submitted are Q'd because of Musikmesse). Once I've done that I'll post some screenshots here that I'll make in the doing thereof. Should be sometime today hopefully. :-)

  • @MusicInclusive sounds great, thanks a lot!

  • @bedhead - here's the screenshot for sending the audio appropriately for outboard FX use. First the default routing, then, moving the connections so that outputs 5&6 on the Mac send to inputs 5&6 on the iPad (I chose 5&6 on the iPad to keep things separate). Then you'd set AB to read from inputs 5&6. The output from the iPad (1&2) goes back to inputs 5&6 on the Mac - and you then record those in a track in, say, Live.

  • So, here's something that's really nice with the iCA4+ in combination with Audiobus, iConfig and MiMix.

I have an iPad connected to Device port 2 and Live running on a Mac connected to Device port 1. I set the iConfig routing as shown, sending the analog inputs for the:

mic and guitar to channels 1 and 2 respectively on the iPad

... and 3&4 which is a MicroKorg, into channels 3&4 on the iPad

These are all seen by Audiobus and can be selected on the inputs as shown.

I send the outputs of channels 1-6 from the iPad to 1-6 on the Mac. (MiMix may have a setting for sending a mono out - but I didn't see it, so I left it as stereo outs - no loss in any case - in fact with a stereo effect it'd be the right thing to do).

I send the mic to Audioreverb, the guitar to Crystalline and the MK to UltraPhaser.

I send each of the result channels to MiMix, and then pan and set levels as shown. Also note the 3 MiMix output channels being sent to different stereo outs (I used MiMix to do this because Audiobus can't at present - only has a single stereo output).

Then in Live, I record from 1&2 for the mic, 3&4 for the guitar and 5&6 for the MK - all coming from the iPad because of the iConfig routings. So, using the iPad as a DIRECT processor - not outboard from the DAW.

You can see the panning I set in MiMix is reflected in Live.

    So, signal chain is:

    Analog -> iCA4+ -> iPad -> iCA4+ -> Mac -> Live.

and the routing is all done in the iCA4+.

    Works great!!!

  • I like mine so far, have to figure out the MIDI routing so I can get my keyboard controller to recognize my SH-32.

  • Mine just shipped from MF. Used their 20% off coupon code.

    20% off coupon code?

  • Just replicated the same setup as above, using Auria instead and IAA directly. MiMix adds a tad of (barely) noticeable latency to the whole AB chain. Of course, if was using Auria I might just record into Auria! :-) instead of using it as a router / host to a desktop DAW. But, hey - useful to prove things.

Note in this example I disconnected Master out from 1&2 and sent the buses to 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 instead and then sent the tracks to those buses appropriately.

    However. Same effect. :-)

  • Nice work. That's exactly what I'm looking for in a video—except to a second iPad instead of a desktop DAW.

  • Great stuff, exactly what I'm interested in too. And it reminds me again how frustrating it is that Audiobus still doesn't have "native" access to outputs 3+ on a multi-out hardware interface. MiMix is neat, but early in development and has flaws, including the latency you mentioned. Having to run Auria to access the outputs is a major CPU hit, especially when I'm mainly focused on live use, not recording on the iPad.

For a while, this made me drop audiobus and just use IAA + Auria as a live mixer, because Audiobus became the unneeded CPU hit. Then I narrowed my setup down to apps that could directly access the inputs/outputs that I needed them to, and have quit using Audiobus and Auria at all for a live performance setup. Turnado, for instance, can I/O using channels 3-4 on the Akai EIE. So can FLUX and Borderlands Granular, etc. You might consider showing one of those apps accessing the inputs/outputs of the ICA4+.

Anyway, my ICA4+ will be here next week, yay!

  • @syrupcore - 2 iPads is on my todo list ;-) iPad -> iPad.

MF emailed out personalized coupon codes in the last month or so. I used it because it was about to expire.

  • @MusicInclusive You, sir, are the fucking best! Thanks very much, works like a charm.
