Thanks for the reminder, been waiting forever to see this one and this reminded me to check Amazon. Watched it tonight, most excellent. Man, all those Chicago records bring back some memories...
Agreed! Though sometimes you need to take some of what Ethan says with a grain of salt.
Not sure if it’s still available, but BBC iPlayer recently had a great documentary on Aussie rock, from the Easybeats to AC/DC.
Bad Meaning Good (UK Hiphop documentary).
Russ Solomon, the founder of Tower Records, passed away on Sunday. He was 92.
I'm reminded of the documentary All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records.

Finally started to watch the 8 part SoundBreaking PBS doc and it's very cool; a lot of the same anecdotes from the 60's to '90's period but the newer technology and ways of music distribution is very inspiring...
One of my favorite music docs is the Classic Albums episode on The Who's "Who's Next". The version on DVD is the one to watch, YouTube may have it as a rental, well worth a few bucks if you've never seen it and like the Who & especially the way Townshend used his demos to blueprint the bands records.
Brian Eno - 1971-1977: The Man Who Fell To Earth. Available on Amazon prime.
Anybody mentioned "rock and roll" yet? It covers many genres and the few episodes I saw have been pretty good. It's playing on sky arts for those that have access.
With my free month of Amazon Prime (started after a fat finger click)
I've been Loving "Rockers"
..."Rockers was originally intended to be a documentary, but blossomed into a full-length feature showing the reggae culture at its peak."...
Being new to synths this old one’s helped. Shows how the building blocks in synths relate to their acoustic version e.g. string of a bow vs body.
Nice thread for newcomers.

Fearless Freaks - about the Flaming Lips is absolutely unreal. Not your standard documentary!
The Devil And Daniel Johnston- equally as amazing.
My vote goes to: Sound City

Prob. one of the best audio/recording industry docs I've seen. So well done.
‘I Am Trying to Break Your Heart’ is a great doc about Wilco making Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I love watching bands in the studio. Any of the ‘Classic Albums’ series are pretty good depending on if you like the band or album, although after watching a band making an album it gives new appreciation for the music. I wasn’t much of a Tom Petty fan till I saw the episode of ‘Damn the Torpedoes’. I’m a huge Beatles fan and there are lots of docs on them but I really liked ‘Beatles Stories’. Interviews with lots of celebs and their meeting Beatles and the like. The interview with Henry Winkler meeting Paul is probably my favorite from that movie. Also ‘Good Ol Frieda’ is a fun watch.

Seems I'm rather late to this party - but thanks to everyone for the gems I've found so far in this thread. I hope there are many more to follow!
Here's one of my favourite music documentaries, and the first one that sprang to mind when I read the thread title:
B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West-Berlin 1979-1989
(2015)
It charts the journey of alternative music in West Berlin From Punk up to the Loveparade, with a short detour into porn (something for everyone!)
Judging by previous recommendations, I suspect @greengrocer might particularly like it
Just in case anyone else shares my peculiar mix of music tastes, here are a few other favourites I haven't seen mentioned yet:
