  • I think Igrand has a good sound and a lot of different presets (though some are IAP).
I only use it in the studio.

CMP Grande is my favorite live and in studio, there's a Bechstein A 190 (IAP) that's sounds like a Bechstein A 190 I used to know and love

Not being a 'Piano Player' but I do like the noises Korg Module makes, I've not purchased the Ivory Grand expansion though...

Doug is a bette keyboard player, and the video sounds good :)

  • I have iGrand and Korg Module, both are pretty good but I would give the edge to Korg Module. It also has electric pianos so it's more versatile.

  • I have igrand and use it live with a synthstation 49 and ipad1. It's good, but the Ivory IAP in Module blows it away. However, only used that in the studio.

  • @Muzikman4Christ It's widely accepted there are three main contenders for piano on iOS. Why not listen and judge for yourself, courtesy of Mr. Woods?

  • IGrand and NeoSoul Keys for electric. Used in the studio only. My two favorites.

  • For the price I've been looking at iGrand. I think IK Multimedia should put them on special this month to help decide between CMP and Module.
I'm not a pro piano player but I want the best sounding all around most realistic sounding Piano. At least I have till the end of June to think about module.

  • @Musikman4Christ Module (esp. Ivory etc) and Neo Soul for weeping in church (and I don't even go to church, but still, heartbreakingly fine stuff....).

  • All three are very good, personally I always use iGrand for piano stuff on the iPad, and I prefer the iLectric for electric pianos and if I'm using the desktop I will use Sampletank3, but it's only my preference

  • I like iGrand the best, and my favorite Piano on iGrand is the one you get on the free app. 2nd place is a Steinway sound font that somebody suggested here and I use it in bs-16i. I like Modules' Pianos fine, they're more versatile than iGrand's, but iGrand's Grand Piano 1 is what I like for a standard sound.

And which for crying in the chapel?

I believe Neosoul keys would do that (and Elvis) proud also...

  • I have iGrand and Module and think they are pretty equal. However if you are working on something orchestral with strings, etc the Ivory expansion for Module can't be beat. I found Ivory sounds great with iSymponic.

  • @Musikman4Christ The Soundtestroom made an excellent video a couple of months ago comparing the top 3 piano apps: iGrand,Module, and CMP Grand.

Since you're undoubtedly the best piano player around here that's got to be worth something.

  • I was just going to buy the module. But than I remembered GarageBand, which I think is often underrated. So if you are no piano player, are those piano and e-piano sounds not good enough? What is your opinion?

  • Korg Module IAP Ivory Grand beat them all!

But, IK Multimedia make supernice software/sounds as well!

I have bought everything on the market, not for using it all, rather to support the developer on the iOS community...
Love to all iPad & iPhonelovers!

  • I think Module generates the most gorgeous piano sound on iPad but it's an issue of personal preference.

  • it is all a matter of personal preference, of course.

It also depends on what piano sounds you are after.

korg module has the best Steinway D Grand.

iGrand has the best uprights (a nice sounding Yamaha with some variations)
there is also a really nice Yamaha Grand as iap which I really like.

CMP has the best baby grand and also really nice Bechstein grand

  • IGrand is half price...oh man, I really need to decide now. I have been watching all the utube videos but so far I don't like the expansion pack of iGrand where the strings pad w off abruptly when playing with the piano. I was watching Doug's video and although it sounds nice that part put me off. Whereas Module pads and strings with piano sounded more natural. Decisions.

  • My personal favorite is iGrand, hands down. Within iGrand, my favorite pianos are the Rich Upright and the Soft Upright.

Apart from iGrand, SampleTank has a piano that I really love - Old Upright Piano.

I love playing piano and it is very important to me to have a realistic piano sound. The percussive nature of the piano is very often lost in many piano samples - I love hearing the "clink" of the hammer hitting the strings, especially on the higher notes. Other important factors are note decay and resonance.

The pianos in iGrand (especially the uprights) and Old Upright Piano in ST do a great job in each of those categories.

I have Module, and the piano sounds are good, but I've run into issues with polyphony (the number of notes that can be played simultaneously without loss). I've never had that issue with iGrand. (I have an Air 2, 128GB running iOS 8.3)

I actually recently released an album of piano music and I used the Soft Upright in iGrand:

Lullaby III - Watercolor by The Art We Breathe
  • I will mostly use Cubasis or Auria so gadget is not my only environment to record. Also, if I do record in Gadget I will most likely end up in Auria and there I can add my piano tracks.
I hope IK Multimedia does a bundle special with the other electric piano app so I can make a decision.

  • @theartwebreathe Not a contest with the other pianos, but have you played with NeoSoul Keys? Talking of the sounds (keys up, keys down etc etc) beyond the tones themselves...

  • @JohnnyGoodyear Yes! I love NeoSoul Keys. I love how they let you individually adjust the "noise" parameters (tine/dirt/pedal and key sounds, etc). I only wish we could get something similar for acoustic pianos (I know these exist on the desktop, but would be nice to have on iOS)!

Would also be nice to have some mic perspective options. I realize all of these features lead to huge file sizes and require some processing power, but as iPad specs improve, hopefully we'll see more of that kind of thing.

  • Wallet withstanding, I think one approach would be:

Bismark bs16i - allows you to hunt down some really good (and free) piano Soundfonts with character you won't easily find elsewhere, plus the app typically plays well with MIDI.

iGrand - before the sale ends. Good all around workhorse for just playing, with great sounds.

Module - so you can have some brilliant piano tones available to you in Gadget.

Just an expensive thought at another's expense ;)

  • Right now I'm leaning more towards the IK iGrand and electric but when I try to buy the bundle it wants to charge me for three apps when I already own Sampletank.

I saw Dougs videos and they've helped me.

  • There's a beautiful preset on the Module Salzburg piano called 'pad piano'. Just tweaking it a bit you can recreate a sound not unlike Harold Budd's most excellent piano sound as heard on some of the best ambient records in the world (IMHO)

why don't you download the free version of igrand, check if the sound quality is good enough for your purposes and then decide? it's always hard to tell from videos how the instrument will play, especially with your own midi keyboard.

for example igrand pianos have very distinct velocity layers which give them both character and potential problems on some keyboards

  • Yes good idea, get the free version and see how it feels, all these three pianos are very very good and some one mentioned earlier about GarageBand, also very good, here's a video I made three years ago, I go through ALL the GB keyboards, but the pianos are first

And here is a comparison video of 8 iOS piano apps and pianos inside apps like Thumbjam, this also features Neo Soul Keys, there is no talking in this one and my Audio ?Sync was about 25ms off

And here is one just for Neo Soul Keys which I just watched again and yeah Neo is really great for electric piano, I may have to reinstall and buy the two I really like then maybe do another demo
