    That's five man!

  • But good picks

  • The Alan Parsons Project, Jean Michel Jarre, Mike Oldfield

  • Dean Wareham (most of my stuff is ripped off straight from Galaxie 500)

Elliott Smith, because he wrote the saddest songs, a modern day Nick Drake, but somehow even more tragic.

And if there was one musician I wished I could be, it be J Mascis, because he is the best guitarist ever (IMO of course).

The Jesus and Mary Chain don't actually figure on this list, that's a note for Johnny Goodyear :)

  • vangelis, grandmaster flash and the furious 5, and bad brains

  • Wagner, Beatles and MF DOOM

  • Brian Wilson, Joy Division/New Order, The Cure

  • Laurie Anderson, Mark E. Smith and Tycho.

  • If I got to choose 5, it would be much different. :-)

    From different life stages:

    • Elvis Costello (college, his Columbia Records years)

    • Stephen Malkmus (my 20's to present)

    • Carl Newman (my 30's to present).

These favorites of mine all create primarily guitar-oriented pop-rock, which is peculiar because my instrument is the synth. Even though I idolize these guys, 99% of what I listen to today is new music in the indie pop-rock genre. Also, these days I listen to more singles than albums.

My "desert island" artist, if I had to pick just one, would be Stephen Malkmus (including his years leading Pavement). I have yet to meet anyone who likes Malkmus anywhere near as much as I do. Most people can't stand his voice. I have hope that I might find a fan or two here ( @richardyot maybe? J Mascis is another guy with a voice that seems to rub people the wrong way).

I was at that infamous show where HR got arrested for beating-up their manager.

  • Difficult, difficult....but for emotional 'impact' off the top of me head, musicians (singular):

Daevid Allen, Kate Bush, John Lennon

Another good one. I used to live in Kington, and cycled up nearby Hergest Ridge most days. The house I lived in was owned by one of his drinking buddies, and apparently he spent many a night in the front room after hours. He asked the bloke I bought the house off (a music teacher) if he wanted to be on his next album (Ommadawn), but the teacher told MO he 'couldn't be bothered'.

hmmm...... This is a goooood thread.

    Alex Skolnick - Testament guitarist

    The Beach Boys

And my friend, Greg Gilbertson - Best guitar player I know.

Now, if I could play/sing as good as any of them, that would be a big++++. O well............

    My friend Greg

  • Alex Lifeson

    Stewart Copeland

    Jon Lord

  • Robert Smith (The Cure) / Tracy Chapman / Adam Duritz (Counting Crows) / Many many others...

  • @thus Yes I am a Pavement fan, saw them supporting Sonic Youth just after the release of Slanted and Enchanted, when they still had the crazy drummer. I think Malkmus has a great voice, and is a great songwriter as well. Although I do think Pavement lost their way after the first couple of albums, and have only listened to his first solo album.

  • Can't believe I left out the mighty Ludwig Van ... I must be having an off day!

  • Patti Smith

    Thom Yorke

    Alice Cooper
