  • @Kaikoo From what I've seen so far of Patterning I'm more than satisfied with it's features as It seems to be pretty darn complete, different time-divisions and pattern lengths per instrument, song mode and plenty of automatisation and import/export options seem to be well thought out too. It's not a 'sampling workstation' and was never intended to be one either but for what it does it's up on the top of the list and I feel it will be well worth the wait :)

    Thank you! Sir.

  • Samu, you should be a beta tester for sure

  • @Musikman4Christ I dislike NDAs way too much, 'open betas' that can be discussed freely are more fun. NDAs are fine for 'paid work' but on my free time I prefer to be 'free' and share the knowledge I've gathered as it benefits both the future users/customers and the developers if they keep their eyes open, it also helps building an opinion on the features that may be important to the users. The 'generic brain-storming' that happens here in the forums brings out ideas that will in the long run benefit both...

As for the bugs I find in released software I do try to report them back to the developers when I find a repeatable pattern to reproduce them. I also send constructive feedback and feature suggestions to the developers of the apps where I see potential for future improvements, some listen some don't...

I'm just a geeky hobbyist with an interest in the technology behind making noises :)

  • @Samu "I'm just a geeky hobbyist with an interest in the technology behind making noises"

+1 me too, and that is the best quote I've read in a bit!

  • @TGiG That's cool...

When I got my Yamaha SY-85 long time ago (-92) I had to get file-format documentation From Yamaha for the samples stored on the floppies because I felt Midi-SDS was too slow (it was slow, writing the same files to floppy on the Amiga 600HD and loading them on the SY-85 was a lot faster than sending the same samples over Midi-SDS). I also made some assembly programs on the Amiga to generate samples and convert them to the native format used on the SY-85... Those were the days...

  • @kaikoo MIDI clock sync in Patterning is brought to you by Michael Tyson's Spectacular Sync Engine :)

You can also configure each track to send MIDI to different MIDI ports / channels / notes and the notes can be automated, so melodic MIDI sequencing is possible. Some other MIDI messages types (CC and Pitchblende) will be supported, but I'm not sure if they'll be in 1.0, there are some snags I'm hitting and think it can wait for an update.

The loops can't have different tempos, but they can have different step durations / step counts. i.e. The kick drum loop can be 18 dotted eighth note steps and the snare can have 7 triplet quarter note steps. etc. In Euclidean mode, a loop subdivides a measure of 4/4, so you can do interesting polyrhythms that way.

@jocphone The time signature is more about labelling the timeline than changing the actual patterns -- since the loops can be many different time signatures at once, that setting doesn't affect the actual output. Different tempos on the timeline is a really cool idea! Not there now, but I think that could be cool, though it make make the most sense to tie time signatures to the patterns themselves rather than the timeline. Not sure, but I'll think about it for an update (or I could delay release for another month or two while I sort it out?)

@kobamoto about OS requirements -- it requires OS 8.1. Sorry iOS 7 people! There's some new iOS8 stuff under the hood that I'm using so it's not possible to do iOS7. As you know the transition from iOS 7 to 8 was a bit messy, so it's much more feasible for a independent developer like me to be looking forwards to future compatibility rather than trying to support backwards.

There's another video up, this one from Synth Anatomy.

  • thanks for all of the feedback!

  • Any release date?

Its the only app on my wishlist for this summer and i cant stand waiting and looking preview videos of this slick app.

  • @Proto it's scheduled for August, fingers crossed

  • This will be the most amazing, and advanced app I've ever seen! Can't wait any longer!

  • Think we need to go into double-jinx reverse-expectation mode: @benkamen Please spend the rest of the summer tinkering idly, no hurry, no rush, plenty of thinks to occupy ourselves with. More haste less speed. A watched girlfriend never learns etc etc

  • The honest truth is this, Patterning really does live up to the hype

Thanks Benjamin. Would love an app that allowed tempo automation. Must say this app does sound interesting already so don't sweat it trying to produce the app with every feature asked for. A few brilliant features executed well is a better start than a load of buggy features that no-one really needs. Anyway good luck with the launch whenever you decide to release.

  • yeah, go ahead and add individual tempo per pattern if you get a chance, from what I can tell you look quite capable and I'm ready to pay for it.

  • I kill the pain by watching the preview videos over and over and over, waiting for the buy button appear and thinking maybe i need a new hobby and go outside.

    Great idea.I love pancakes :)

  • Crap, iOS 8 only (I understand why). Guess I know what I'm doing then when I have enough time.

  • Yeah, that's s cool app. Now if it ports to iPhone or I get me an iPad...

  • I'll jump in and echo what Doug has said: Patterning is fantastic. I've also been able to play with the beta version, and it is both simple and deep, if that makes sense.

I'm no drum programming expert, but I found it very intuitive and easy to create some wicked loops. The control over parameters, and the ability to customize so many of them can really create some nice variations in sounds. The sample libraries are also diverse, and sound great.

    You will not be disappointed.

Patterning feels almost like a 'rethought tracker' when it comes to the level of flexibility and automation :)

Missing options would be different sound/sample per step and some playback-options such as reverse and offsetting sample-start but for those kind of effects I'll use Renoise.

Patterning really feels like a new fresh approach into chaining together sample based drum/sample patterns and loops and will for me most likely replace some of the others...

  • Same i just assumed it already had reverse and offsetting , love renoise too but it's not on iOS :(
