I got sick of my laptop crashing and crackling- and I began to notice that apps like Nave and Gadget were better for my needs than anything on PC- and the iPad also finally delivered on the promise of turning a computer into a tactile musical instrument-
I feel lucky sometimes that I don't utilize the iOS music offerings near as deep as much as a lot of you all seem to, so I tend to find very little amiss with it.
@monzo my experience has been that changing out apps in Audiobus frequently leads to significant problems with lost audio. Removing and then adding apps back from Audiobus one at a time can frequently restore your audio. Keeping the same apps per Audiobus session seems to provide the most stability.
Definitely, but not always the case. See my Audiobus issue thread - even trying to setup new channels from scratch can be a complete nightmare - for me anyway.
Got sick and tired of falling over cables, tuning analogs, off-setting MIDI tracks to compensate for each piece of hardware's internal latency, midi jitter (last truly tight MIDI track I made was with a Fking Amiga 1200!).
Tried laptop with VST's, but sound is weirdly 'narrow' despite trying many good priced audio interfaces.
ipad audio sounds open, wide and clean. No idea how or why.
And then there is Gadget, of course!
It's not a switch, just more options.
I would never see it as a replacement for desktop production at this point. I was a late adopter to make the "switch" from tape to DAW, and from hardware to virtual instruments, and still use some hardware synths and outboard gear, if the project calls for it.
If I can play or compose something better or different on a touch screen, then I'll use that method. That doesn't mean I am going to give up the guitar, piano keyboard, drums, or any other skills in which I have invested years of practice.
I like the idea that we have these little tablet gizmos that look like something worthy of a time called the 21st century. And the iPad Pros can't get here soon enough. But I can't see making a full "switch" anytime soon.
Hey everyone,
Long time reader first time poster lol
I got into iOS when I started using imaschine on my iPhone a few years ago. I thought it was pretty cool that I could export it into my maschine.
I then got Ableton and spent a year and a half learning that program but something was still missing! I got an iPad mini and the next App I bought was Cubasis. I immediately saw the potential and went on an app purchasing binge but something was still missing. I needed to upgraded to a bigger IPad (my mini was 16G)
Now I have the Air 2 128G with what seems to be a million and one apps. I'm in the process of selling Ableton cause I have so much more fun on my IPad. I love the portability and power to it. I'm deciding to focus all my effort on producing on just iOS. I found it distracting to go back and forth with my laptop and iPad even with the iconnect.
I love using audio bus and the new remote is incredible. I enjoy reading the crazy combinations everyone comes up with here as well.
Cheers from Toronto!
Welcome! That's an inspiring story. I'm also doing "just iOS" music production and I'm loving it. Mo' simple = mo' betta.
Thanks. My goal is to keep everything very simple as well. When I have too much stuff/controllers in front of me I get distracted really easy. I just sold my beat step and akai mini 2 the other day.
All in or nothing! lol
I must admit that I've been here since midi was made public, and honestly mobile computing was the next logical step in music composition. Portability and the promise of leaving behind all of my device driver woe's were big deciding factors as well as having a full blown Moog synth on a device that fits in my pocket. The touch screen is still being developed I believe and it has its up's and downs that are going through an evolution.
@Noirflux Glad to hear your voice on the forum. I take if you are selling Ableton you have solved the sync issues between apps and a DAW in iOS? If so what is your normal setup for iOS?
Not really lol but I just keep it pretty simple. Korg Gadget is my app of choice! So given that everything is self contained I have no problems there.
When I wanna start a new track I start with my drums and play drum loops from imaschine into Cubasis through the bus. Just dealing with audio. When I have a bunch of apps loaded I pretty much do the same thing. I dont use midi too much but when I do I usually stay within in the app to keep things simple.
I will admit though im still trying to find the best work flow. Theres so many apps and different ways to play lol
For me MIDI is key. I want to have the ability to alter notes, change sounds, etc with all parts of the arrangement playing at the same time. Maximum flexibility.
I feel your pain @monzo I too saw the wizard behind the curtain snoozing away...
..since moving to Surface Pro 3 using (glitch free and in perfect sync) the likes of Ableton with all its packs and instruments , Synthmaster, Sunrizer, z3ta, Spark 2 etc....I feel a great relief that it's all behind me now.
I know what you mean. I find I play around too much with midi cause it can be edited endless. So I try to record everything to Audio when I find good combinations otherwise I will be tinkering all day
It wasn't me, the mouse made me do it.
I tinker all day
I can't believe I can't figure out how to delete a track in Auria.
How?
lmao. I just tinkered an hour ago
I set aside time to just play and experiment when not actually trying to put a track together.
I'm excited to see what all the developers do with remote integration. I saw a preview of elastic drums yesteday. I was drooling and slighty turned on lol
Not sure what you mean?
To delete a track just select that track in the editor view and hit the delete button.
Thanks man, I just edited my post. I meant to say I can't figure out. Thanks!
No worries
I love tinkering too. It's my favorite thing to do in MIDI after coming up with melodies and drum patterns. You're right about knowing when to stop. I've just started learning about mixing with compressors, EQ, reverbs, etc. That stuff is tinker city!
Right? That why setting aside tinker time each day is is so important. I could spend days on one eq and it normally sounds the same in the end lol
My lastest tracks have come from tinkering to be honest.
I set up a new project in Gadget and then spend a few days or even weeks just experimenting with fun stuff like:
creating mad patches
trying out different ways of sending midi into Gadget (eg the glorious DrumJam)
re-creating styles and effects I hear in other tracks etc
messing with other apps and bringing in stuff I like as samples
Then I get to a point where I think - can I make some of this stuff into a track? Usually not all of it - but there might be a couple of things that work well together... Or I need to re-jig or whatever. But I try and kind of bend some of the interesting stuff into the start of a track and then fill in the gaps.
So it means I can play and experiment to my hearts delight and not think "oh I'm getting distracted from making music" - because it's one in the same thing.

There's wisdom in what you speak!
I've been using Gadget a lot lately. My current workflow is that I start out with London and 2-3 clips with just the kick(s). Then I work down the first column adding snare, hats, etc to the kicks. Then I move on to the second column and write some bass lines. The next column is leads, etc until I have 8 columns. I use 8 because the top row on my Launchkey is 8 pads horizontally. Then when every clip sounds good with the others I export the song to a Ableton Live project file (every iOS DAW should have this feature).
Cool. I guess you could export to the launchpad app if you wanted to keep it iOS.
My only thing with this way of working is that from that point on I couldn't tinker any more. If I felt the drums were a bit too much and needed some hits taking out. Or the lead patch was a bit harsh. Or I wanted to have a hint of the lead earlier before the lead actually came in. Or a riser/transition.
Plus don't you get weird abrupt endings at the end of some clips where a long release or delay or reverb would naturally continue on?
I kind of work like this in Gadget too. But instead of exporting, at that point I just jam a lot with the mute and solo buttons and then start rearranging clips inside Gadget to make a full arrangement.
Then once I have a full arrangement I do loads more tinkering
@Matt_Fletcher2000 I try to take care of all of the notes before exporting but you're right about loosing MIDI note control after exporting.
I wish I could stay in Gadget but there are some major features that are missing:
1) Launching individual clips from a pad controller.
2) The ability to add synths/samplers/drum machines from other manufacturers.
3) Mixing with compressors, EQs, reverbs, limiters, etc. I can't believe how much better tracks sound when you can add different effects to each track.
This has all been covered in your excellent 3 wanted Gadget features thread. So it's a trade off.
That's a good question. With sounds that have long tails I turn off looping on the clip in Ableton and use the clip as a one shot. But with Gadget for some reason I've only run into that problem a couple of times. Maybe it's the sounds I'm using or in some cases I don't play sounds with long tails at the end of a clip.
Do you run into the tails problem in your Gadget projects?
