I also did a lot of beta testing and sent several letters to the developer regarding the timing.
Never once got a reply. So i thought wtf?
The timing divisions time signatures and bars etc..some got fixed, but did it get fixed completely?

I never got a reply either. Dev communication is soo important in making a good product unless your product is genius from the start, which this one ain't.

I even got couple of emails from Marcos Alonso and his app IS from another planet.

So many apps, so little time...

  • I guess I must have been lucky then, getting almost instant replies from the dev...

The quantise works a bit different from other apps with options for 1, 1/2, 1/3 and off...
But knowing that the base is 1/16 it's somewhat easy to figure out that 1 is 1/16th, 1/2 is 1/32nd and 1/3 does 1/16t.

The are still some cosmetic issues to work out in the grid-editor, remove some redundant menu options and and iOS9 stability fixes and well we'll get AudioBus in both input and output slot.

After the iOS9 update hits the AppStore i will do a proper test and report back the issues that still bug me personally to the dev. (Current version is quite shaky under iOS9.0.1).

I use the tape-recorder in FingerBeat as a 'pocket memo' and record stuff into it and chop out the interesting pieces to pads for sample-madness and for that it's hard to beat ;)

  • Just got the promo code from Sergio. Sometimes one has to be a bit more patient I suppose..

  • I did testing on it also and sent some concerns, I got rely from the developer with a promo code also. Sweet.

FingerBeat has just been updated. It can now export 'perfect' loops and can optionally bake in the tailing samples into the beginning of the loop. It also automagically bakes in the bpm into the export-filename among other smaller fixes :)

I've exported a less than perfect loop via audiocopy. Tail still present. It's probably just me.

  • edited September 2015

@supadom You need to enable 'loop' and 'mix tail' to get the 'perfect' loop...

You can find that setting when you're in the pattern editor and select export from the menu.
    Hope it helps.

After that you can use the 'iCloud Drive' option to send the file to AudioShare.

  • Cheers @Samu I've totally missed the perfect loop switch, now all good even if there's still a tiny bit of silence at the top.

  • I proposed a 'Beat Repeat' button within the Drum Pads page: there's room within the layout as-is to near the lowest big pad. This tied to adjustable timing settings could echo the MPC repeat scheme: all the basics plus triplets.

To me this would be phenomenal within FingerBeat.

Are you using the bundled samples? I've noticed that some of the bundled samples are not 'perfectly trimmed' and I suspect they were recorded with the 'tape deck' and it doesn't yet offer 100% sample-accurate editing but it has a zoom :)

I checked the samples after extracting them from the App Bundle.
With my own trimmed samples I don't have any gaps in the beginning of the exported loops.

@Proppa I've also requested a 'pad-repeat' at the set quantise value which should be about the same as you request.

As far as I know there is no 1/8 quantise variants, the base is 16th notes and the variants increase the resolution (Snap to Grid 1 is 1/16th, 1/2 is 1/32nd, 1/3 is 1/16t). You can see the individual grid-steps when you zoom the grid-editor vertically.

I've also requested a 'button' which could be held down to temporarily play a pad/slice in reverse and even a suggestion how the 'reverse' steps could be indicated in the grid editor (a small 'r' inside the step-circle).

Other suggestions are per pad/slice gain (this could be used to gradually distort the sample when playing the slice/pad from edge to center).

I'll give the AudioBus implementation a spin when it's available as I've not had any new betas sent to me lately.

Screen on my iPhone 5 is starting to feel little smallish for advanced FingerBeat usage and my iPad Air 2 is just huge in comparison :D

  • @Samu I've just gotten the app via a code so haven't uploaded any samples but good point it makes sense. I really like the tactile qualities of this app but the menus drive me mad, too many of them.

Feels like BM2 all over again

  • I agree the menus can get a bit confusing but there are a lot of options there. The main idea was to keep most things simple and still keep the options there for those who really need them :)

The 'file-system' is also a bit confusing at times that's why i use the 'tape-deck' as a sketchpad and copy snipets to the pads from there. (Finding out how to do tape-effects and input-effects setting input-threshold etc. Was tricky in the beginning).

Also there are some extra options in the button menues at the bottom and it's not super obvious that it's possible to scroll the buttons left and right to reveal more options. Some menus have more optikns when scrolling up and down too.

I still do feel that the developer is very open to constructive feedback which is a good sign.

My personal nag is that i'd love to have a bigger editor for the tape-wave and be able to normalise and reverse sections of the tape. and well use the tape editor on the pad samples without need to import the wave to the tape, edit it and import back to pad, kinda 'in-place editing'.

Setting the sample boundaries for the pads and slices can become a bit trivial too due to small wave-view.

But i do love the flexibility of the app with multiple slices per pad and option to trigger multiple notes per slice (so if one pad has one piano sample it's possible to slice the pad into 4, keep the root note and 3 chord variations). Just for fun do chords with one hummed note :)

  • @Samu

Have you come across any good videos that explain what Finger Beat can do? You make it sound so interesting, but just haven't got my head around it yet.

  • @Fruitbat1919 Nope haven't found any good videos apart from what's on the site.

There is one 'private' youtube video shared on the FingerBeat FB-Page.
You can't find it if you search Youtube either so i hope this link works.

I'm hoping the Sergio has already sent some codes to the folks at the SoundTestRoom and other sites swell. I was offered a bunch of codes but recommended sending them various sites covering iOS Music Apps.

Sure I got free promo-code but I would have bought it anyway since the betas won me over...

  • @Samu thanks for the vid. Been giving FingerBeat another go. Getting there with it, but found a bug while using it on my iPad Air 2 iOS 9.01. On the pads page there is a sounds button. If pressed, the app goes to background and stops playing. This never happened for me on iOS 8.4.

  • @Fruitbat1919 That's one of those things that the forthcoming iOS9 update will fix...

  • edited September 2015

Interesting that videos I have come across date back five or six years. Like other folks I sense this should fit somewhere in the workflow as a good little gadget (oops), but get a bit stymied by the lack of immediate linear logic as a n00b (which I still feel like despite repeated visits). I fiddle a bit, understand one thing, forget how to do something else, stumble about, and then wander off. I really want a pack of three or four videos voiced by someone stern yet calm like Hazel who tells me exactly why, what and how in a sensible sequence.

  • @Samu I agree that there's a lot of options in the app but I for instance never got lost in sector. It is a deep app but about 80% of the menu content lives in the upper right corner. I think the developer got some things spot on (drum pads, tape deck etc.) and some not (menus). Of course that will not be a problem for those who have time to memorise all the quirks but some like @JohnnyGoodyear or myself will either never purchase the app or buy it but never get the full use. This could then lead to some leaving bad reviews on the AppStore etc. etc.

Just trying to say that getting it right in terms of UI serves all, the user and the developer.

Sorry, this became a bit of a rant.

  • Believe me I've ranted to the dev too regarding the somewhat cluttered menus and other things, even video tutorials covering every part of the app :) (The video I linked earlier is for some strange reason hidden so it can't be found on Youtube by a searching, but knowing the link apparently works).

I mean there's even a semi-hidden 'lyric thing' that allows the user to mark places on the tape and sync/jump to right part on the tape for 'rap rehearsal', mic/line input effects, and tape-compressor/output and argh, too many things lurking behind the curtains to be found.

I've been 'fingering' FingerBeat a lot so I find most of the things intuitively by now but still manage to find things that I haven't found/tested before...

Once the FingerBeat iOS9 update hits the AppStore I will compile yet another wish list to complement the previous list (from which everything has been not yet been implemented).

Another good way to 'rant' and 'suggest features' is the FingerBeat FB Page, especially for more tutorial videos :)

Nothing here, I guess he didn't like my joke about timing signatures from another planet...e.i 5/5, 4/3 etc..lol

BTW, did the timing and bar divisions get fixed?

  • edited September 2015

For the thin record I did spend the hour aloft between Heathrow and Brussels this afternoon trying to partially de-noob myself (again) with Fingerbeat and, as is sometimes the way, found it easier at least. Not completely clear, but the good bits were good and I made a couple of less-than-five-second slices that slotted nicely into Bilbao and that alone makes the game worth playing.

In other news the cheese parcels on The Grand Place are as good as ever.

  • FingerBeat fix through

  • Meaning:
    Updated to audiobus & ab remote;
Hoping for midi in & out then :)

  • Don't know if anything is updated, just that it now works with iOS 9.02 on iPad Air2 as well as it did before I updated iOS

I can see it updated, Fruit.

  • Is working well with Audiobus. Have it tonking (technical term) through The Great Frobulator as we speak. Fair waking up sleepy Brussels. Or it may be me who's sleepy. May be enough to perk me up into a europop session.

    Or not.

STILL, brilliant that this thingie is working with that thingie.

I have and I declare it good (again) and underrated as a destination by those who rate these things, but I have 48 hours of devilish work to do and some of that will involve tying a silk noose around my neck and dancing clumsily like the corporate bear. Longing for the laziness (and time to play) that is Austin....

  • Second hand dance stylee.

  • Hey Folks! FingerBeat update just been approved by apple with support for: iOS9 & Audiobus / Remote.
