@DanSebPage wow, quite a complex project. Good example to see how much folding is needed. What are these bus tracks? I‘m interested in your technique.

Hey Krassmann. All the drum parts go to a bus group track, so they can be processed with some additional effects. Same applies to the bass and synth groups. I usually apply some EQ to the groups as a whole, maybe some compression / side-chain or saturation etc. Just allows a bit more 'shaping' of similar instruments after their initial individual effects. Also means you can pull down the volume of all synths/bass/drum parts with one fader during mixing stages!

@el_bo, what is your workflow like? My routine is almost always the same. I improvise a stretch, divide it into parts, add a lead line or drum track, plug in various synths, minimal effects, rarely more than 4-6 tracks and a careful arranging mix. A track is usually complete in under three hours.

I certainly don’t tax the capabilities!

I personally use it as a direct replacement for FL Studio, using loads of plugins, effects & automation (the project below currently opens up with 102 plugin instances!) I also have no issues with it - it's a brilliant piece of software, very processor efficient, and I'm always pleasantly surprised at the frequency of updates this DAW receives.

@LFS My only niggle is the lack of 'clone' patterns, I currently try to use colours to identify pattern types in my projects, and as you can see in the attached screenshot, tweaking any one of these patterns, leads to a lot of copy/pasting. Please tell me clone patterns is somewhere on the to-do list?! (I don't mind if it's near the bottom, as long as it's on there!!)

    Hi @DanSebPage,

WOW - that project does look impressive... :)
Glad to read that Cubasis seems to work and perform as expected for you!

Pleas let me have more details about your clone pattern request.

Hi Lars. By 'clone patterns', I mean you create a pattern of midi notes as usual and then duplicate ghosts of that pattern throughout the track. If you decide to move a note in your 'master' pattern, all the 'slave' patterns automatically match the change.

Currently in Cubasis, every single pattern placed in the timeline is unique, if you change one note, add another drum hit, tweak the volume of a note, etc. you have to copy/paste that change to all instances of the pattern in your track.

Clone/ghost patterns would save loads of time for an incessant 'tweaker' like myself!

  • @el_bo Just out of curiosity, what AUv3 'plug-ins' are you using?

Some plug-ins are more stable than others and to keep my sanity I stay very far away from AudioKit based stuff as much as I possibly can and the only one that has not yet caused me any issues is the latest AK Rack Reverb.

I also feel that the 'app cleanup' I've been doing lately contributes to overall stability of my system...
...I just delete apps that cause problems with more than one host and make an extra effort to avoid apps from those developers in the future.

    Cheers!

I also never got as far as taxing capabilities.

Nine times outta ten, 3rd-party software instruments wouldn't make any sound, when re-loading a project. I had to manually swap the plugins (Keeping MIDI in place), then re-choosing the plugin. From there, it'd playback normally. Then, invariably audio would drop out randomly while looping. It took re-loading CB3 to get it to start playing properly. Add to that the corrupted audio bounces (Not every time. But enough to make me feel i couldn't rely on them).

This was on 2-5 track projects, in early stages.

    Hi @el_bo,

This should definitely not be the experience when using Cubasis on all regular current iPad devices.

You may give these steps a first check:

    • Create a new project
    • Close all apps, including Cubasis
    • Fully shut down the iPad

Does Cubasis works as expected on its own, once you've relaunched the iPad and app?
Once checked and approved, try to use a few 3rd party apps.

Here are a few more articles to check:

    Thanks for responding :)

I have the current, basic iPad 9 model.

I tried various different things, including using CB on it's own, after hard-reboots (Holding on/off and Home until reset and return of Apple logo). Various things, really.

I watched a video from a YT channel i'm subscribed. He mixes all his music in CB, on iPad. But it turns out that it's mainly audio recorded from external synths. So I thought that before deleting the app I'll try an experiment to see how stable it is in a project that only uses CB internal sounds and FX. No 3rd-party, at all. And I've not experienced a single problem I've yet to try bouncing-to-audio, so that remains to be seen. Otherwise, it's been great!

I understand that I should've deleted it instantly. But I thought it a worthwhile experiment to check. I knew I'd be re-initialising my iPad soon, so thought it'd be ok. Will be re-installing the iPad at the end of the month, so at that point it'll be gone. Of course, if you'd prefer I delete it immediately I absolutely will. Otherwise, perhaps I can run various tests to determine what's happening.

In the meantime, I'll look at the documents you linked.

The most notable problems (The one's i can remember) I was having were with Arturia's iSem and Virsyn's AudioLayer. While it seemed to happen with other synths (Can't bring to mind), the Arturia was the one that would most often not play on project loading. And AudioLayer was the one that most commonly experienced audio dropping out after a certain amount of play-throughs of a loop.

I remember these the most, as they were the last thing I was working on.

In light of my current experience using internal sounds/FX only, I'm inclined to believe the fault is not solely with CB.

  • @LinearLineman said:
@LFS, just published my 600th Cubasis track. Is that enough of an endorsement? Time to revise my review, I think!

The most problems I have with CB3 are with the SWAM instruments. They just don’t work and play well together. I always manage to get the job done, but if I use more than one SWAM track it requires regular reloading or freezing.

Every so often, as well, the program will simply not load a project and I have to give a hard reboot. And on rare occasions I have to get the app open by selecting “open with new project” in settings.
I’m thinking this probably never happens on the desktop version.

These issues, of course, do not in any way diminish my appreciation for Cubasis allowing me a sublime creative experience. I know I only use 10% of its capabilities because of the simplicity of my technique and that it is a tool that I will never outgrow. So please thank the team for me personally, if you would. I suspect I am one of the most prolific creators using it on iOS. Cubasis makes that possible.

I like the logo change… now please consider an update of the Home Screen! 😘😎🙏

And, of course, I always admire your imperturbability! Happy Easter, Lars.

    Hi @LinearLineman,

600 published tracks... WOW... that is indeed an incredible number.
We're glad to read this and to have you in the Cubasis family... :)

It might make sense to get in touch with SWAM to let them know about the issue.
Of course we're at hand to exchange with them on a technical basis, if required.

We're happy to read that you do like the new logos... :)

Stay healthy and happy easter holidays, Mike!

    Best,
    Lars

Please tell me clone patterns is somewhere on the to-do list?! (I don't mind if it's near the bottom, as long as it's on there!!)

Can i ask what model of iPad you're using (The memory etc.), the types of soft-synths (Low-CPU intentionally, or whatever you wish) and what kind of CPU usage is being reported.

    Thanks :)

Hi El-bo. It's the 2021 11" iPad Pro. I've never selected a synth based on it's CPU usage, I merely chose whatever synth takes my fancy and trust Cubasis' muti-threaded capabilities to handle the CPU load.

I don't really pay attention to the CPU meter (and am currently away for the weekend, so can't check) but the iPad (& Cubasis) just seem to be able to handle anything I can throw at it these days without any audio dropouts - it blows me away how much it can handle in real-time with no audio bouncing required.

I had one project a few months back that was just starting to glitch out the audio (until I increased the latency up a notch). However the very next Cubasis update claimed 'much-improved multi-threading', and lo and behold, after the update, it could handle the exact same project with ease at the lower latency setting!

I really believe Cubasis' multi-core performance is what sets it apart from other iOS DAWs personally.

Thanks, man! Really appreciate the thorough reply.

I really love the app. Not that it bears any real resemblance to the Cubase that I used back in the 80's, onwards. But it definitely feels closer to a traditional DAW (I've been on Logic since 2007), and so very much like 'home'. Made the hiccoughs all the more frustrating, for me. However, it seems people are really 'flying' with the software, so...

    Thanks, again.

Just yesterday I removed some crackling from a track by disabling multi-threading on my 8th gen ipad with a pretty heavy project. As I understand my device is too old and have weak multi-core performance.

On my 'old' iPad Air 2 (which is way older than the your 8th Gen iPad) starting with the 3.4.1 update the performance is actually better with the multi-core CPU thingie turned on! (That was not the case on pre 3.4.1 updates where I had it always turned off).

There are a few (SunVox being one of them) AUv3's that play perfectly with it turned on but fail to render properly.

SunVox dev is working on support for 'off-line' rendering for the 2.1 update which should fix most of these issues and those 'fixes' will likely find their way to his other apps as well.

This behaviour really puzzles me as the playback works with multi core rendering turned on but freezing/render fails even with the 'realtime' option turned on, there is no real 'logic' to this behavior.

So when I need to render these 'problem' AUv3's I just turn multi-threading of during the freeze/render and then turn it back on again.

Me just want the Cubase Sampler Track in Cubasis and a bit more flexibility when it comes to track 2 track routing together with support for scales for the on-screen keyboard and piano-roll editor and well the tempo-track and this, and this and that :sunglasses:

    Hi @DanSebPage,

WOW - that project does look impressive... :)
Glad to read that Cubasis seems to work and perform as expected for you!

Pleas let me have more details about your clone pattern request.

    Thanks in advance
    & stay safe!

    Lars

    Hi @DanSebPage,

Thanks for the clarification... ghost or shared copy make things clearer for me... :)
Will share this with the team.

    Stay well
    & happy eastern,
    Lars

I’m all for it! Pattern ghosting in Cubasis3 would be so beneficial to me!

  • Does anyone have a demo of “presets” itself mentioned in promo page ?

  • Yea to pattern ghosting.
