Is it possible in LK matrix to switch from Midi mode to Live control mode without losing all clips and starting all over?

Can you please elaborate a little more regarding this issue? We've just tested switching between an Ableton live session and a Midi session, and all the information in each one wasn't lost. What's the workflow that is causing that issue and what are you exactly losing regarding the clip information?

    @Samplix

We couldn't replicate the hanging notes issue you're describing. Have you tried the suggestion by @symianbeatz? Switching bassalicious by other app to see if the hanging notes issue persists?
Also, are the hanging notes only caused when using Launchpad? If you create a clip with a lot of notes and send it to bassalicious, do they hang?

  • I wasnt clear enough. The information in each session stays when I switch, but independently of each other. I was thinking: when I create midi clips in MIDI session, I would love the option to transfer all the midi information (clips, notes) to Live mode when I switch to it.

That's actually a pretty neat idea, sort of using midi mode in AUM as a sketch pad and then flipping the midi into live mode to take advantage of all your favourite desktop plugs.. maybe a convert to feature could be implemented..

It could be interesting but you can't do that right now. What you can is to save a project as an Ableton Live Set. Just click the save icon on the top bar and choose SAVE AS LIVE SET. Then send to your computer and open in Ableton.

Is there a way to create clips with „fixed lenght“ settings? (without creating an empty clip beforehand)
if not @sinosoidal any chances to get this implemented with the launchpad pro mk3? this would be very useful in my opinion. furthermore how do I send crash reports? are they generated automatically (I use the testflight version). unfortunately LK does crash quite a lot in my AUM setting. Also hanging notes are a problem for me..

Have you tried tuning of the midi clock send from the launchpad? That worked for me as far as hanging notes goes.. I like to see fixed length clips too, would be a time saver for sure asni mostly work in 4 or 8 bars..

Can you please make it clear what do you mean with fixed lengths clips? When you create a clip, by default it has a fixed length of 1 bar (4 beats). You can also start recording a clip without a pre defined length by arming the track, arming the song to record followed by pressing play.

So yeah, it'd be nice if you could predefine the default clip length you wish to work with so that if your preference is 4 bars every time you create a clip it's instantly four bars as opposed to the current 1 bar and then have to go into the clip inspector to make it four..

Thanks for the reply, very refreshing to have a Dev listen to suggestions..

That is a very common suggestion. We will write it down and implement it on the next LK iteration.

Thanks for the feedback! It is also very rewarding to work with an engaging community!

We have made available LK 1.12.4 beta (build 284) which includes a new matrix settings for default clip length. Let me know if you need to be added to the TestFlight and send me your emails via pvt message.

  • Here is the changelog for the latest LK beta (1.12.4 - Build 284):

    • Added record count down setting (defined by default to 0 under MATRIX - MIDI settings)
    • Default clip length is now a setting (defined by default to 1 under MATRIX - MIDI settings)
    • Tempo can now also be set via input dialog
    • Piano-roll vertical viewport navigator was reintroduced
    • Controller module's knobs were repositioned below buttons
    • Fix composer keyboard notes preview
    • Fix MATRIX's Live mode crossfader

If there is anyone here that wants to be added to TestFlight, please send me a pvt message with your email.

Thank you so much for adding this per my request! Unfortunately I can’t do TestFlight since my devices are limited to ios12, which it won’t run on, but I look forward to this making it to the official update, so I hope it works out! But nonetheless thank you again for listening and already implementing at this stage!

Also, are the hanging notes only caused when using Launchpad? If you create a clip with a lot of notes and send it to bassalicious, do they hang?

    @xglax
Sorry for the late reply! I have tested the issue of hanging notes again with the latest beta version (in AUM). I managed to cause hanging notes several times within half an hour with different apps (Bassalicious 2, OPL, Moog Model D, SquareSynth). I don't use quantisation in the process, so that may be relevant. I use the Launchpad pro mk3 as my midi controller. And yes, I have already done a hard reset of the iPad several times.
It is unclear to me what is causing the hanging notes. Sometimes I can deactivate the synth plug-ins briefly to solve the problem. In one case, I noticed that apparently two identical notes (E2) at the beginning of the clip trigger the problem (see attached Ableton Set Export, Track 4, Scene 2). When I start this clip, I get reproducible hanging notes (E2). Is it possible that LK generates two notes on top of each other when the note is played just before recording starts? I can't explain why there are two identical notes on top of each other at the beginning of the clip....

In order to validate this problem we will need to set a common ground. We will need to use the same AUM version, and the same synth, preferreably in the same version as well.

Let me check with @xglax which of this synths we have. Then we will ask you to make a video where you start from the scratch, launching AUM, loading the synth, setting your routing, and reproducing the problem.

Thank you very much for the implementation of the functions "fixed length recording" and "record count down" which are very important for me.
    Below some feedback on this:

    • I would appreciate it very much if the setting for the default clip length was a pull-down menu (e.g. to the right of TEMPO, choices: OFF, 1-bar, 2-bar, 4-bar, 8-bar, 16-bar, 32-bar).
    • As an Ableton / Push user, it is a bit unusual that I first have to generate a clip by double-clicking (on iPad or via Launchpad) to record with "fixed length". In Ableton, pressing once on a pad (from the Push) is enough to start recording. However, a distinction must be made between "fixed length" = on (e.g. 2 bar) or off.
    • In order to be able to use the "record count down" function in the way I am used to (as in Ableton), I have made the following settings in AUM: Transport Midi Control: Record when stopped=Yes and Toggle Play I have mapped to the Play Pad of the Launchpad. I also linked the fixed length pad of the Launchpad with Metronome on/off. In LK, I also activated the yellow infinity sign under Clock Source next to Host. I saved these settings in an AUM template. Is there an easier way to use "record count down" like in Ableton? For me, the play button in LK makes little sense if it is not linked to the one in AUM..

Sorry but right there is no space to have that setting next to tempo. Don't forget that LK also runs on phones and the space is very limited on this kind of devices.

After some search it seems that Ableton Live itself does not have a setting for a default clip length (if it has, please let me know because I could not find it). Therefore I believe this is a feature that Push provides.

    • In order to be able to use the "record count down" function in the way I am used to (as in Ableton), I have made the following settings in AUM: Transport Midi Control: Record when stopped=Yes and Toggle Play I have mapped to the Play Pad of the Launchpad. The problem is that you are using LK as a plugin inside a host. Ableton Live is the host itself. Right now we are not aware of any other way of making this happening but this might change the in the future as are always trying to find better ways of doing things and we learn a lot from users like you, that challenges our products and knowledge.

  • It is a valuable Push feature, not Ableton Live

  • speaking of premium Push 2 features: a auto ZOOM FIT mode (like on the push display) would be awesome! for example apply ZOOm FIT every end of a clip lenght or end of recording. I find myself pushing that icon after every loop I record. But maybe thats just me..?

  • I'm seriously impressed by your level of commitment to your product kudos guys👍

  • @Samplix

The latest beta includes the fixed length feature you were asking. Remember that the fixed length will only be applied when you create clips in record mode (this happens when you press a slot without a clip and the track is armed). Before, this action was creating a clip without a pre defined length. Now, with this setting, when the clip is created with recording, it will record until it reaches the defined length.

Regarding your request about the auto zoom fit, thats actually a nice idea. It makes sense at the end of a recording, but what do mean auto zoom every end of a clip length? Every time it loops?
