Battalion by Unfiltered Audio (Released on iOS)

"A deep world to get lost in - This delivers that in spades!" - Jamie Lidell, Hanging Out With Audiophiles

Unfiltered Audio is back on iOS with its instant classic Battalion, perhaps the most advanced drum machine available on any platform. Battalion includes over 20 synthesis algorithms and 5 sampler algorithms, each built for advanced sound design via simple controls. All eight drum channels can use both samples and synthesis simultaneously. 11 filter modes and 11 distortion algorithms add further sculpting options to each voice.

Additionally, all eight drum channels contain rich modulation available for every parameter, including two LFOs, two envelopes, and more. A global Performance page shows a simplified interface that allows you to manipulate every drum channel simultaneously. Want to hear your drum beat tuned down an octave with a single knob? Done. Need a global boost to distortion or a dramatic filter gesture? Easy.

Each drum channel contains two sequencers. The first sequencer is a manual step sequencer with ratcheting, probability, velocity, pitch, micro-timing, and more... per-step! Each parameter lane can run at a different speed and length, making generative, evolving patterns a breeze. The second sequencer combines Euclidean patterns with an Unfiltered-designed permutation engine.
Both sequencers run in parallel and receive further shaping via an array of Sequence Modifiers. Want one drum sequence to speed up while another slows down? The SHAPE parameter is here for you. Need that hi-hat to be a bit lazy? SHIFT will nudge it to rush or drag. And if you think drum machines have no soul, wait until you combine per-channel SWING with global HUMANIZE.

All of this advanced sound design is glued together with a flexible mixer and Unfiltered Audio's evocative effects. Battalion contains two new Unfiltered Audio effects: Shatter Delay and Headspace Reverb. Shatter Delay combines granular stretching, dynamic ducking, sample crushing, and feedback spectrum sculpting into a melange of echo bliss. Dubby, dark, dotted echoes? Chaotic glitch storms? It's all here.
Headspace Reverb evolves Silo's ten classic reverb algorithms with additional filtering options. You will always find the perfect reverb for your drum mix.

Battalion includes over 150 presets to get you started. These cover a wide variety of genres and tempos, from glitch and IDM by esteemed sound designer DataBroth, to futuristic hip-hop from Willie Green (head of our favorite Backwoodz Studioz). From smoky and loose to shiny and mechanical, Battalion is ready to be your go-to solution for every rhythmic task.

  • WOW! Can’t wait for the iOS version..

  • 20 synth engines + sampler with 4 playback mode per voice, complex modulators, generative beats with tempo modifiers, randomizers, variations, and performance view? Damn, that's impressive! Looks like UA learned what's where interesting in software drum machines and supercharged it with clever ideas, somewhat inspired by eurorack systems.

  • Love the look of having many engines with different characters and condensed controls. Looks pretty inspired by Elektron’s “machines” approach. Always love a good randomise button too. I’m hyped for the iOS release!

  • Not sure if I'd switch from Sugarbytes Drumcomputer. Generative and synth options look similar, the sequencer here looks worse because it's not a flexible grid that can vizualize swing and humanization like DC can.

So it IS the year of the drum machines…

    I told yers

  • Looks like a good replacement for Waldorfs IAA drum machine

  • Looking forward to this - all UA apps are gr8!! 😻🎛🌈

  • Looks like a lot of controls, but i really hope the iOS version is universal.

  • iOS! let's go! I'll get it on Desktop too. A good drum machine is a good time.

  • The more I research, the more I like it! This is insane, it’s like Hammerhead and DC metamorphed into something incredible. 🤩

  • Can’t wait for the iOS version they make the best music apps

Just try PC demo. And don't forget to get day off from work :p

This looks excellent. Love how they have included the randomise options with the "amount" control which also exists in Silo etc. The number of synth engines opens up a wide range of sonic possibilities.

    Looks amazing and fun Indeed!

Any rumors/info on when this will get to IOS? (And do we know for sure that it will?)

  • I feel like I could do most of this synthesis-wise with Drambo. That being said, UA's plugins sound really nice and the presets/randomizer/condensed-ui will have me buy it regardless.

I love dRambo, but please recreate Batallion in dRambo so I can laugh my a55 off and start to question the meaning of life. 😂

  • Wow. This one looks really powerfull

  • Next you’ll be telling us it will have its own built in automation 😛😛😍

    :D

Drambo is great for percussive synthesis and you can go far with it. I haven't uploaded all my drums but here's an example one https://patchstorage.com/hatᴱ/ . Lots of other good stuff on patchstorage. Drambo's wave scanner, wavetables and FM can get you all manners of percussion

I didn't mean to disparage UA, one of my favorite plugin creators on iOS. Ease of use and well made engines go far, even if you can synthesize them yourself. Especially because for many people Battalion would be a great self-contained app without having to muck around with an AUv3 host. Mostly just brought it up to say that for folks who are already deep into the iOS space, they may be able to achieve similar sounds already.

Yesterday I just got your patch. Damn awesome. Playing with it and the ZX81 from Machine Aura (a Digitone + Cycles replication), is a blast

Well, that’s a challenge if ever I’ve heard one.
Many moons ago I attempted to recreate dRmcomputer and didn’t do too badly actually.
    Here’s the vid.

When I get a moment I’ll hone in on Battalion as I’ve learnt a lot since I did “Faster than Light”.

I don’t want to put myself in a position to defend the Batallion over dRambo, it was not my intention at all. I’m using dRambo in every single one of my projects. And Batallion will never replace dRambo. 🫣

BTW, you did a breathtaking job with the dRmcomputer, and FTL speaks for itself, magnificent. Respect! 🫡

No need to defend Battalion at all,
    the challenge is in recreating
    the functions of another instrument
not whether one is better than the other. 😏
Though I attempted to recreate drmcomputer
there are elements that I cannot recreate.
I may even get Battalion myself at some point because I love drum machine apps.
For the record I've recreated quite a few instruments now and
one of my favourites is a mono synth inspired by the Behringer Crave.
@rs2000 actually asked if it was Moog over on the Beepstreet Forum
which I thought was a great compliment, that preset,
by the name of Aurelius, is also going to released into the wild. 😁

    Thank you.
I've yet to revisit it however when I do I'll release the preset into the wild.

    I actually prefer the latter.

EDIT: there was a picture in the post above but it seems to have vanished for me...

Yeah I was gonna say, you forgot to upload that on patch storage. 😜

As far as Battalion goes, idk, I don’t really need it, personally…

But if it’s $4.99 or less, I’ll probably buy it to help support. Any more than that, then I think I’ll pass as I already have 724 different drum machine apps PLUS Drambo.

What I’d really like to see, is for some of the Lumbeat @LuisMartinez drummer apps to be updated with AUV3 support. Then we’ll have something!

And until Drambo gets updated with more options for odd meters, time signatures, and grid settings for it’s sequencer and piano roll, there’s still the good ole process of basically using Atom 2 as your drum machine sequencer… either hosted inside Drambo (When using Drambo as the host) or by using separate Drambo and Atom2 auv3 instances in another host. (Whatever it takes to get the job done)

The only thing with this setup, is the fact of Atom 2, while it still works perfectly as of right now, sadly, hasn’t had any updates, nor any activity at all from it’s developer in how many years?
