I couldn’t help but notice another „thanks to gav“ by Gustav scholda in his latest App Updates. That you have that kind of impact with your honest and kind ways always encouraged me to contact developers to tell them my excitement about their work and also giving opinions about ideas for improvement. And for that especially I for once wanted to thank you.
Oh and as an example: I think I wrote Gustav that’d be great to have an adsr modulator once and now his apps have it and I can use it. Not to think I had anything to do with the idea by itself but I still feel like I’m part of the audio world thanks to that.

Hi Pia, there are 2 things it sounds like you miss: one is how many different, interesting audio examples I used to have in my vids, the other is the massive comments section filled with comments. But changes in both these areas have nothing to do with Patreon or Twitter, and they have more to do with the community than me, tbh Pia.

Video length, detail and number of examples:

if I was getting more financial support from devs and viewers I could still be doing those kinds of vids. I did videos like that regularly for about a year when I first started my channel. Some involved absolutely huge amounts of work. I would often cram in insane numbers of unique audio examples - each of these sometimes took tons of experimenting and finessing to come up with.

This was the pandemic and my real world work had dried up almost completely, I was living off savings and had found this passion project, which I genuinely loved. But later I discovered how little I could make from YouTube ad revenue and realised it was madness for me to continue putting that effort in. I never wanted to be rich or famous, Pia, but a man needs to eat and live and have a balance in his life. I was burning myself out in every way, creatively, physically, financially. How could I keep using my savings to support myself while putting that work in, when I was getting almost no sponsorships from devs, very few donations from viewers, and very little income from YouTube.

I have to save for my future, I am generally living in Asia, outside any welfare systems or insurance systems, in a not so great financial situation, in far from perfect health, and one factor making it more precarious has been starting and maintaining this channel instead of spending time more doing something that actually pays the bills, this past four and a half years. I do have some part time work I've been doing, it is flexible, it is quite easy, I can do it from anywhere, but I don't earn much from it. I've never been motivated by money, but I can't continue to be too madly impractical.

A further issue was when I developed cataracts in late 2020, got them operated on somewhat unsuccessfully in 2021, and my eyes have never been the same since. Around that time it became extemely difficult for me to sit down at a desk for long periods, as I was having so many muscle stiffness and pain issues too. I would easily lose my voice while making vids and would have to do take after take after take to get things right. My sleep was bad, I became very stressed. I ended up on antidepressants and sleeping pills for a couple of years, stopping both of those only last year. Health struggles continued. At a certain point last year I was only capable of limited amounts of screen time. Even keeping my eyes open til the end of the day was sometimes hard. At times, in the evening I would want to work on videos but just couldn't, my eyes were so seriously fatigued. I couldn't even watch a movie at those times, I had to close my eyes and listen to a podcast. Now that is quite a bit better, I get less eye fatigue, but these eye issues cast a very major shadow over my life over the last few years. On doctors orders, I should be doing much less screen time than I do.

Regarding the comments section:

The comments section is a shadow of what it was, I agree. But it's not for want of trying on my part. It's because few viewers comment there any more as they are not incentived to comment by giveaways. This change in behaviour greatly saddens me too. So many apps given away to people over the years (and those giveaways take time quite a lot of time to admin). A huge amount of time, many, many hundreds of hours, spent by me over the years replying to comments, often lengthy and heartfelt replies. And then, when the giveaways stopped, the majority of people stopped commenting. Very sad, but this is the community's behaviour, not mine. I hope you'll agree that opening up regular giveaways on YouTube again is not an appropriate solution. The appropriate solution would be for more people to take a few seconds or a few minutes out of their day to contribute to the comments section. I miss those times too. In some ways also Pia, what you're mourning is a certain time, the pandemic time, when online communities like this became an important means of connection for many. This forum has also changed since then. In some ways it is sad, but in other ways it is good. Everyone would benefit from prioritising real world interaction. Digital community is a pale substitute for real world connection.

It's important to mention though that there are definitely members of the community, here on the ABF and on YouTube, Insta, Threads, Twitter and Patreon, who have given amazing support in various forms over the years, and I greatly appreciate those people. I have made a few genuine friends also doing this, even if I have met with very few in person. I am glad there are spaces where people can meet like minded hobbyists.

Sorry if this reply is a difficult read Pia, but I have to describe the facts as I see them from inside, where I do have a privileged vantage point in some regards compared to viewers. Both in terms of knowing what my own challenges and sacrifices have been, and in terms of things like understanding how YouTube and other platforms operate when you are a committed 'creator'. There are other things I'd like to say but I can't. This post would get too long and my heart would break a little too much.

I appreciate your genuine concern, Pia, and that of others in these threads, and I even appreciate some of the saltier comments in their own way. This is an important topic. I might be slow to reply to comments here on this in the next few days though. This whole saga in this (sorry @Poppadocrock!) and the other, now vanished, thread, has taken up a lot of my time and emotional energy. These things are draining for me to spend much time reflecting on and writing on, as this is a deeply personal and somewhat painful topic. I'm also currently back in Ireland visiting family and friends for the first time since the pandemic started, which is another reason why my YouTube and other socials output has been less than usual over the past month. I need to prioritise those friends and family, and myself, for a while. Wishing you and anyone else reading this an excellent weekend.

Wow Gav, you’ve certainly bared your soul their mate and it’s obvious that you have a great passion for what you do. However, there comes a time when you have to reevaluate your situation and ask “is this working for me ?” and clearly it’s not.
I don’t know just how many people there are in the iOS music making community but there clearly anren enough to make a living from. The three YouTube content creators that I think of first and foremost are yourself, Doug from the sound test room and Leo from soundformore. You have, in total, between you, less than 100k subscribers. Doug, with 71k has the majority share and even he is getting, on average, no more than 1k views per video, which, if I recall (from what you’ve said previously) is less than £5 in revenue so that’s never going to be a viable income stream. I know that you have Patreon but as you’re discovering, people either haven’t got the spare cash or the inclination to spend x amount a month for membership so unless things change that also isn’t going to provide a sustained income. The devs, whilst providing you with a couple of free codes for giveaways, presumably don’t provide financial recompense?

So in summary your’e spending a fair amount of time producing videos for an audience that is decreasing and have a Patreon that most people are either unable or unwilling to pay for and the developers of the apps that you are producing videos for are themselves unable or unwilling to recompense you for your time and effort.

There is no doubt that this is a labour of love, but on the face of it, it’s not a financially viable career choice and the stress of trying to make it one is obviously making you unwell.

I wish there was a magic solution and I for one would hate to think of you and the other content creators not producing content anymore but surely you must reach a point when you say enough is enough and look for something that will provide you with a better income and less stress?

Feel free to make a fresh thread if you want - or bring the discussion to my YouTube comments section where I just posted a short note telling viewers that I am back in Ireland so have been, and will be, less active on YT and other socials than usual. Doug is not the only mod btw, please don’t cast blame, and I have already written to Michael saying I think that old thread should be resurrected, and that I did not personally think that The Algorithm deserved banning. Let’s see what happens, but also let’s avoid too much more drama about it all. Life is short, none of this is really life or death stuff.

I do also have some sponsored videos lined up, so some devs also recognize the work involved and value the channel. I have put too much work into all this to drop it entirely without a bit more of a fight to make it succeed. I may indeed have to end up quitting YouTube or pivoting to a different niche, but let’s see. In the meantime I am trying to prioritize my health, happiness and real world relationships. Please don’t worry too much, I’m in a better place mentally and physically now than I was a few months ago. Cheers.

Personally I've set a yearly limit on app spendings (for this year it's max $600 and I'm currently slightly bellow $350 with a few months remaining).

Look, I did not start this thread, the user TheAlgorithm started it. They then made a fresh thread and I commented there. That thread got taken down. Others continued the discussion here and I responded. I was a reluctant participant in the thread, my intention was never to make this thread 'all about me', that's a gross mischaracterisation. As far as I'm concerned, the topic can end here. I prefer if anyone wants to continue discussing it, they do it on my YouTube channel community page as I mentioned earlier. Please do that folks, last thing I want is more drama.

Edit: I am not going to start a new thread on this here, I've really said all I want to about this. Let's leave it please, folks. I am not going to respond to fresh comments on this thread about the topic. If people really feel the need, they can discuss on the latest thread on my YouTube channel. This is a deals thread, not a drama thread. At this point, both the users and the moderators are allowing this insane amount of off-topic discussion to happen.

I have no idea why this hasn't been confined to a separate thread. And I literally don't care about this discussion, but I will say that making paragraphs-long posts—whether that's about how shady you think iOS YouTubers are or a dissertation on how you didn't do anything wrong and won't contribute to more drama—is just adding fuel to the fire and propagating the discussion (and egging on bad actors).

I've had to comb through drama posts to look for deals over this last week, and I'd very much like not to. Don't keep posting about how the discussion should end. Either end it on both sides, start a new thread, or impel a mod to take action. This has been incredibly annoying for some of us who don't have dogs in this fight.

Nope, my life is levels of shit on a daily basis but this week is next level shit. I come here for escapism and bargains and to forget. 😛

To put it back on topic. I’m actually going to delve into my yurt rock indie drums volume 1-7 which were free with my joey waronker pack (but free with any purchase.) You can’t download on iPhone, it says you need computer, but you can on iPad. I’ve already rewritten a track with a joey sample and it’s improved it so much. Might not be for everyone but they work really well for me.
