Yah I completely under estimated just how much that would hinder iOS for me as a music device. When my M1dies, the next one will just be a base model mainly for basic browsing/streaming and I'll get something like Ableton Move or Roland Aira instead.
You can get the 5gen mini. It's still fast and has the headphone jack
Just saw in a Reddit thread that someone said that stem splitter does work on the new iPad mini even tho it says it requires an M powered chip. This puts this back on the table for me
It seems the iPad minis use binned versions of the iPhone 15 Pro chip. The iPhones have an extra GPU core. Seems like Tim has been saving the rejects for this product
It’s quite surprising that the iPad uses the A17 Pro chip as that was the one made on the first TSMC 3nm process which was apparently very expensive and Apple quickly moved to the newer 3NE process for the M4s and the A18 line. Which is why the M3 was so short lived as a processor.
There was no non-pro version of the A17 and the A17 pro was only used in the iPhone 15 pros.
None of this means anything as such. I just thought it was interesting from a nerdy perspective.
Heard the same about b stock chips selection for the mini.
Overall, it's quite meh of an upgrade. The same display, almost the same CPU (performance wise). To only noticable upgrade is 8gb of ram vs 4 on previous gen.
Hopefully mini 8 would be something more spectacular. We will find out... in ca. 3 years 😂
Okay, I just checked, and Logic's stem splitter works on the Mini 7 just fine.

Still rocking the 2020 mini and it works but disappointed the tech isn’t there to put a M chip in it. Will pass on another incremental drip release by Apple.
What other 12.9 M chip users are considering getting the mini 7? I’d probably get more work done , going back to the 12.9 when necessary.
I find my mini2 screen a bit small for using while walking outside and my fingers actually prefer the classic 9.7" (my last base spontaneously crapped out). But not having usb c and doing files over lighting was pretty rough and flakey back in the day. Since there would still end up a day where there is no longer a headphone jack ios device that is practical for me I figure why prolong the pain? Maybe by the time my M1 croaks there will be that super amazing low latency Bluetooth standard implemented.
I've been waiting for the next ipad mini. I have a 5. I'm disappointed they didn't at least go M1 chip on the new one. I'm not sure I'd sell off and upgrade. That said... I don't really notice any processing issues ever on my mini 5. Everything works fine. All my graphics apps, video editing, and Auria Pro actually works better on my ipad mini than it does on my ipad pro M2.
The only problem with it is that my mini 5 is only 64GB (it was a gift)
As I mentioned, my Mini 7 can run Logic's stem separation just fine. If it can do that and also run Auria Pro, it is rather powerful despite not having at least an M1 chip.
FWIW, the latest A series chips have higher benchmark scores than the M1. as long as Apple doesn't lock it out, Mini 7 should handle most anything it can and more
The M1 uses more power than the A17 Pro for reasonably similar performance. The A17 Pro has nearly 50% better single core performance than the M1 iPad, the M1 has double the performance cores so wins on multiple core performance.
but overall the A17 Pro is pretty close in performance to the M1 and uses less energy and will have better battery life.
And as I mentioned before, it's a binned iPhone 15 Pro chip. What else were apple going to stick that chip in? It makes no sense to put it in any iPhone as the new 16s use the newer 3ME TSMC process which has completely taken over from the manufacturing process they used to make the A17Pro. My guess is they have enough chips already made to fulfil the run of the Mini and they can stick an A18 in it when they run out without too much drama.

If you’re in the US, OWC has some used mini 5’s for sale. If you’re not in the US, I don’t know if they are a good source or not, but I bought my m1 mbp from them a year or two ago and it’s been great.
I’ve been looking at some of their iPads because I need some for live sound gigs and don’t need the most recent, but the iPad mini 2 I’m using to run my faders is showing its age now.

@israelite Wow, single core performance definitely makes a difference for demanding audio plugins.
Decided to pick up the iPad mini 7 to try out against my M1 iPad Pro and I’m probably going to trade in the M1 Pro and keep the mini. It handles everything I’d use it for with ease from stem splitting in Logic (only a few seconds slower than the M1 Pro), to all of my sessions in BeatMaker 3. The form factor is just so much better as a tablet. Not missing the 120hz as much as I thought. Ill see how I feel in a few days but right now this feels amazing.
Why not jist keep the pro though? You probably won’t get that much in trade for it .. It’s good to have, no?
Thinking also about getting mini but 6 and would never get rid of the M1 pro since it has super useful stage manager which sadly all minis lack
$370 for a 256GB M1 Pro which puts the 256GB Mini at $179 with education pricing. I don’t think that’s a terrible trade considering how much I’m liking this form factor.

Can get at least $500 for it if you do not go through Apple. Their trade-ins are rubbish.
You get less from Apple but the time saved having to deal with a private sale is worth it for me.
Fair enough, time is money. The 40 minutes (maybe?) total messaging on Facebook to sell one of the most popular consumer goods on the planet, is worth the extra $150+ for me!
Exactly the way I felt after switching to a Mini 6 last year. My Mini 7 has 512gb storage, so a much-needed storage upgrade. Also uses the Pencil Pro, which is fun to use with now having a hover cursor in ProCreate. And I love purple as a colour.

That's my secret. It's basically a monthly "rent-to-own" subscription, so it's easily factored into my budget thankfully.
