@sigma79 Neoart pastels look rather lovely tbqh. Can't believe they discontinued those. That sucks.

And yes, even the base iPad is very essential imho. It's great for when you can't afford expensive supplies and can't be arsed to sit up by a desk to make trad art. Can just relax in your sofa and make digital art.

Anyways, thank you. I tried hyper realism. It's fucking difficult, even in the digital realm. The older I get, the more I love Abstract art. Just as the older I get, the more I love Ambient music and Outsider music. ❤️ Used to be a young punk, but no longer am.

@Dav Hell, that dog painting looks great to me! The point is, a person can right away see that it's of a dog, even as an Abstract piece of art. Idk, I think it's very well made, and you drew that as a kid? Amazing work!

Oh yes I forgot, I did this a couple of weeks or so ago, to get back into the swing of watercolour, it's using a photo as reference which I took in Gibraltar the previous month, I left all the good photo gear at home and only took the Fujifilm XP120 waterproof camera and it turned out to be all the camera I needed

Wow! So many wildly creative and talented folks here! I wish I could draw or paint or sculpt but I feel my efforts are the equivalent of a cheap wine when it comes to that. :P I guess what I do have visually is a decent sense of aesthetics ("good eye").... so I like to take pictures off stuff. By day I am an effects animator at Walt Disney Animation (been there for Big Hero 6 and everything since) so I create simulations and random effects for animated features (and I seem ok at that "artistically" ). In addition to that and photos I have been just barely dipping my toes into torch enameling. Generally trying to make pendants that take inspiration from photos I've shot.

@jwmmakerofmusic It is extremely cool working at Disney! I love my coworkers... it is an amazing, inspiring place to work. It's so great working on projects that are our own.... Before Disney, I worked for 19 years at Rhythm & Hues doing effects for films and the clients were soul-crushing. But at Disney I can be in a director review, show some test for an idea I had and the directors can be like "we love it! put it in the film!". Anyway I am truly fortunate.

@jwmmakerofmusic oh yeah I meant to say.... I just saw an early storyboard cut of Zootopia2!!!! That's one of the amazing perks of being there... seeing early versions of the films... and witnessing crazy ideas that pup up and (correctly) never make it to the final cut. Oh... and when they score the film, they often have a stream available to watch the orchestra as they play along to your shots (well everyone's but face it... it's cooler when it is your shot!)

Iv only just experienced how you actually add colour to create shape ( although I did paint an acrylic tree in 2012 etc ) Same kinda thing. Just add dark, then light to create the shape.

Instead of just drawing lines and coloring in.

(Of course personal music will still be crafted. I mean, there's only so long I can go without producing some sort of Ambient at least!)

Not sure what you did on BH6 but it's one of my favorite animated movies. Very nice work.

But, I definitely need to get back into charcoals someday. The "General's" brand I heard makes good ones.

Abstract art has always been cool, and I've always wanted to give oil pastels a spin." So, that's where my creativity ended up, and the piece I made above inspired a piece of Ambient believe it or not. Sometimes creating in one way feeds into another way.

I used to write quite a bit. That's always a good outlet also. Makes no difference what you choose to write, just get something down and see where it goes. Sometimes it's short stories, sometimes it's lyrics or poetry or whatever.

By the way, I used to paint with gouache, acrylics, oils on canvas. I recommend several virtual painting apps on iPad: There is the very popular "Procreate" (of course), but there is also the excellent "Art Set" painting app (which has some very convincing looking pens, pencils, chalks, pastels, markers, watercolors, oils, airbrushes, textures, etc.).

Thanks, and yes that's well spotted, the scene is very much inspired by Vermeer: the painting at top right is a Vermeer, and the map on the wall, the tapestry, and the wooden globe are also references. This is the original lighting, which was meant to be Vermeer-like (I created some variations later)

Thanks. I think I used my Apple Pencil (the first model) on iPad Pro for both of these, not based on any images or photos.

Procreate is a bit more sophisticated than Art Set, so I recommend looking up Procreate training and demo videos on YouTube to determine if it’s something you want to learn. It’s a genuine pro-level tool.

Art Set has the better emulation of physical media, like thick paint on canvas. Even the process of mixing the paint onscreen is enjoyable. So they’re really two quite different apps. I like them both.

There is a third app I didn’t mention, and it’s also a lot of fun, but I don’t use it much anymore. It’s called SketchClub and it has its appeal.
