  • Cool! This looks like an Elastic app that I’d actually use. The others are interesting for sure, but I’ve never managed to gel with them honestly.

I’ve been having a lot of fun with this today. I put together a little track in Drambo to see how far I could push it. Ipad Air 5 (M1) running 11 instances of Elastic OSC, plus a few other FX. When I tried adding a little automation (in Drambo) it started crackling, but otherwise solid, even though the animations slowed down*. Pretty impressed by how light it is.

And it’s so quick—I made every patch here from scratch. (Oops—except for the bass.) Quick but quite deep and with a massive range in sound. This one is going to stay in the rotation.

*I should note that you can turn the animations off, which presumably saves a bit of CPU.

Edit edit edit… the drums were pretty hot so I re-recorded. I turned off the animations first (which is just the ‘particles’ behind the automation circles) and it seems to help a lot—dropped the meter in Drambo down a notch.

  • This is very cool. Can't help but compare with the recent Blofeld release. They both sound excellent, but Elastic Osc is a million times more enjoyable to work with on a touchscreen. Even as a desktop UI Blofeld is subpar. The iOS platform needs apps like Elastic Osc much more than it needs direct desktop ports, imo.

@Gavinski user experience is everything on iOS. I mean, that’s why we’re using these portable touchscreen things, isn’t it? For my part, I find myself loading up synths with great UX rather than thinking just about sound. Some developers really get it—Imaginando, BLEASS, David Alexander, Erik Sigth. And their apps sound great, of course. I’m really in love with the Elastic OSC interface, it’s so well designed. Which lets you get creative, quickly!

User experience is soooo damn important yes, and it is so mediocre in most iOS apps these days. This must change!

  • And there I was thinking I'd hold back on this and along comes @Gavinksi showcasing some of the more weird and wonderful sounds this thing can spit out. It's so far up my alley it may as well be a permanent resident! Now where's my cheque book...

  • lovely interface for a great fun engine.
I really like it. I'll use it live for sure:)
Bigups Oliver and the team behind
    and thanks Gav for video.

  • My few questions are..

    • Does it have midi-out support in the AUv3? (I consider this almost a 'must have' when a plug-in provides a play-surface with pitch-bend, mod-wheel. If not an option to hide the on-screen keyboard should be added).
    • Does AUv3 automation work properly in LogicPro for iPad? (Ie. are touch & release events implemented for AUParameters).
    • Can user presets be exported? (Are the presets stored in iCloud / Files app for easy export and import?).

Other that that it looks like a really nice implementation of Mutable Plaits Module...
(Already have a few apps implementing it, Spectrum, TeraPro and miRack so from that perspective it's not an 'essential' purchase)

There are already a couple AUv3 synths that run Plaits. There's the free app bundle Spectrum by Burns, and there's the BrainZ expansion for Tera Pro.

Does this new one do anything that would be missing from either of those apps?

Spectrum has 14 models, BrainZ 16, Elastic OSC has 24. Spectrum and Elastic are 8 voice polyphonic, Tera Pro max 128. I’d say that Elastic OSC is the most immediate of the three and very playable.

The original Plaits has 16 synthesis modes - what are the extra 8 in Elastic OSC?

If I recall correctly there were some firmware updates giving the OG Plaits 6OP FM Synthesis etc.

All of these extra 'oscillators' are not present in Spectrum or TeraPro...

Perfect, thanks @Samu. From the page linked to…

  • The extra oscillators don’t seem to be present in MiRack Macro Oscillator 2 either. Pressing the two buttons oscillator selection buttons at the same time (as described on the page linked to by @Samu) doesn’t seem to work, for me at least.

  • So would Terra Pro Brainz and Popsicle FX basically give me Elastic OSC alas over 2 apps ?

  • edited May 2025

    @Gavinski

    But does it MPE-eeeeeeeeeeee? 🥹🙏🏽🤞🏽

edit: just finished watching your great video on it and heard you say it's not MPE. 😭😭😭. Off i go to beg another developer...

I'm so ready to love this synth, but it's just gotta bend and warp and growl under my fingers or its just not worth it.

As far as I know the other apps (Spectrum, TeraPro and miRack) have not been 'updated' to the latest plaits version thus the new oscillators are 'missing'. I don't have the 4P app which is based on Plaits, it might be using the newer version with more oscillator types...

Ideally the effects in Elastic OSC could have been based on the Mutable Instrument effects as well. It would have been like smacking all mutable flies in one go :)

No Plaits 4P app AFAIK. Only RingsFX, based on Rings.

  • How do you assign something to the mod wheel? I understand how to record various controls but, even the mod wheel, but not the assigning to say filter or something.

  • Hello, Oliver here ... Developer of Elastic OSC

Was not aware, that this Forum still exists since the switch from Audiobus to Loopy. That's great! 😀

The Mod Wheel works a bit different as usually. You can ONLY set the amout of Automation/Modulation with that Wheel. So you have to record some Automation first.

Hint, almost all UI elements are explained: first tap on the "?" icons and then on a UI element ...

    Hope that helps

Just bought the app but I'm not seeing all the RedskyLullaby presets shown in Gavinskis and Dougs videos, I only get three presets from him...anyone else got that problem?

Also, presets created in standalone don't show in the AUv3...

Love the synth. First one of your apps I’ve bought.

I will throw my voice into the chorus requesting MPE be added to this. Would really solve the final step for this synth, IMO.

You are right. The RedskyLullaby and SOi presets where not in first Apple upload, which is already 2 days old.
I already sent an update with these presets to Apple yesterday night, but Review from Apple really needs long this time.
    So patient, on the way.

Shame on me with standalone generated presets don't show up in AUv3, this will be the next thing of another update.

Ah alright, so the mod wheel controls the global amount of automation? That's a pretty unique idea, at least I don't think I ever seen that before. 😃 Cool

  • @elasticdrums You absolutely nailed it with this synth. Superb. Any plans to add multi-input/sidechain so that we can use CV to trigger the 6-op FM oscillators? …if I understand that correctly, I haven’t used Plaits before.

I’ve been having loads of fun, here’s a modular jam I put together this morning. All modulation done inside ElasticOSC, with MIDI from Euclidean sequencers in Drambo driving 8 instances, all patches from scratches. Synth of the year for me, it’ll be hard to top this.

  • @elasticdrums a great implementation of my favorite oscillator module! Two things I'd love are:

    • key tracking for filter cutoff
    • modulation that run per note instead of just tempo synched modulation (if I get things correctly). For instance, an envelope with some destinations would be great (but that might make it too complex?)

Anyway, I had great fun today buildings patches and creating music, as I did a lot in VCV some years ago!

  • Something a bit special about this one

  • @cyberheater said:

Indeed. You can start off with any of the provided patches and with a few small changes can get something radically different. It's incredible.

  • Love it! One thing that's not clear to me: How does modulation work? On the physical device you have CV inputs and Attenuverters for Timbre, FM and Morph. What's the input here? I've noticed that the LPG Decay affects modulation somehow though.

  • Update with the Presets by SOi and Red Sky Lullaby is out finally
