Hey all,
I recently got a Mac Mini. I was initially hoping to use GarageBand, but have run into issues with it not recognizing some AU plugins.
I’ve been looking into Reaper but I am also kind of tempted by Cubase Elements which is on sale for the same price. Anyone have experience with either?

Based on the alternatives you mentioned, I would personally suggest Reaper. It is a full-fledged DAW with no limitations in number of tracks etc., which you can download it now and try it before purchasing it.
It's far more complicated (for better or worse) compared to Garageband, but it's highly customizable and extensible, which can be distracting at first.
I would suggest to focus first on replicating your workflow from Garageband to Reaper (load VSTs, record, routing MIDI controllers etc), and then to start looking into optimizing things (e.g. change/rearrange UI, track templates, making use of actions)
Logic is probably the best bang for the buck in music software. You get everything you need to make music in one package. It’s more than Cubase elements but you will quickly hit limits with that one.
Reaper is great if you have a particular kind of brain. It’s not for the feint of heart. It’s good for the kind of people that like to spend ages tinkering and adjusting the app. There’s a whole community of people that make skins for it.
As far as cost goes I bought Logic Pro X in 2014. I’ve not spent a penny on upgrades since and in that time it’s added so many cool features, effects and instruments — plus it’s the best way by far IMO to share project from iPad to Mac and back. Just, say, the Quantec RS reverb would be a $200 plugin on desktop.
I think that If you buy a cut down DAW you’ll regret it. Buy once buy well :-) it’ll save you in the long run.
As for GarageBand not recognising some plugins, some of them are a pain to authorise especially if they’re auv3s. If so, make sure you open them all first as apps on the Mac then try again.
If theyre in the apps folder, they’re auv3. Standard AUs go in the plugins folder in the library.
There’s a free trial for Logic on the Mac.
Logic has been the best audio thing I’ve ever bought for 30 years. So yes — I’m very biased.

Thanks @indigo and @klownshed !
I didn't quite get to play too much with Garageband, even though I wanted to stick with it before purchasing a new DAW. The problem is that I can’t use any midi fx AUs with it, and even with plug-in wrappers, I couldn’t get it to record their midi output.
Reaper is pretty impressive for the price, and I liked being able to open both vsts and AUs, and the idea of scripting. Was mostly interested in Cubase for its score editor which does a pretty good job of translating the midi cleanly (I am trying to analyze songs and some of them aren’t in printed songbooks).
Logic was able to match what Cubase was doing after some setting tweaks (at least for the midi I was testing). It was also able to open the midi fx, record their output, and it even opened some AUv3s. I also saw a video about the smart tempo function which won me over.
The price over time also ends up being cheap given the lifetime license. I figure that if some of my AUs stop working over time, I can always use the built in Logic fx.
I am almost certain that I will get it even it it means being even more locked into the Apple ecosystem.
thanks for that suggestion.

Ableton Live went rent-to-own, with no interest charged on top.
Only valid for a new license for Ableton Live Suite, no upgrades, no updates, no simpler versions.
https://www.ableton.com/en/rent-to-own-ableton-live/
Smart on their part, but I'm perfectly happy with their Standard version and don't feel like I need the extra 70+ gigs of samples with the Suite.
You’re welcome! I love free UAD plugins also (and have plenty of UAD that were not free as well). I’m going to try this today, I didn’t have time to do it yesterday.
Oh wow. I can't utilize this but I most certainly will when the time is right. Thanks so much for pointing it out!! This is hella exciting for my specific use case and availability
Im sure for many others as well... I just don't wanna speak for anyone else 😅
If you're a fan of G-Force Software's synth plugins (I'm a recent convert) you may want to look at this current sale of 49-50% off of their DMX drum (Oberheim DMX emulation), IconDrum (LinnDrum emulation) and Halogen FM synth.
Since I already have their DMX and IconDrum plugins, the one I'm really waiting for now to go on sale is the Novation Bass Station, which is really nice.

G-Force plugins are ace. Their mellotron is probably the best one there is and their synths are up there with the best IMO
I got Bass Station and a few others from GForce ‘free’ with a Novation keyboard. The software bundle that come with Launchkeys is properly good.

I did it! I used Ableton Live Lite for years and had Suite in and out of my cart several times. I enjoyed Splice’s rent to own program and finished those, so I look forward to finishing this one. Ableton’s plan is pretty flexible too, you can pay more and or pay it off at anytime!
