Incredible. It’s shaping up to be a really expensive year for those affected with GAS. Both Roland and Akai coming out with amazing machines in the same week. This is one of the best MPCs in a long time. Hats off to the engineers.

  • How much is this beaut?

  • Looks good.

    About 1 Tonverk $

  • Sorry, was wrong the Tonverk is 1.295 €.
On a german site they say 1.649 €

    https://www.bonedo.de/artikel/akai-mpc-live-3-test/

  • My first thought - are they going for regional pads off the 4x4 effectively making it an 8x8 Launchpad/push compeditor? Like that one controller that started with a Q?

The lights around each pad are suspiciously broken into quarters, rather than the solid surrounding lights theyve used for previous incarnations

Just a curious design choice if not

Aw man, all I got is this pile of Shrute Bucks and a handful of loose Stanley Nickels

@Jumpercollins : Why would you need the MPC3 if you have say an iPad Pro running Logic annd perhaps Koala already?

  • For that price I’d buy a new ipad and a launchpad pro and would be probably better served.

That is the very question I've asked myself numerous times since seeing posts about the new MPC:) LP4i with Koala, the Quick Sampler and the new stem extractor is a fun, powerful, ultraportable combination.

You don’t. If you want a stand alone box then you get an MPC. Having the MPC X, there’s nothing I can’t do with it in that can’t be done in Logic ios.

    💯

Whenever I see new hardware my GAS goes off the charts. Then I calm down and realize I already have it all on my iPad in one form or another….

The only thing I don’t have is the tactile feel of knobs and sliders but enter a controller and… well, there I have that as well. Saves me loads of money and space😎.

My personal perspective has changed. I spent many years having fun making music making on iPads stand alone. Then I added an SP404mk2, Circuit Rhythm and then a Minilogue XD and used them with my iPad in different ways. This year I bought a Mac, audio interface and some midi controllers - how I make music has now changed. My gear is now all connected and I can still switch everything on and be making music in less than a minute.

I've come accustomed to all the sliders, pads, dials and switches within reach. I now find making music on my iPad only to be uncomfortable for anything beyond making short snippets of sound. I do however miss the convenience of a portable device to take easily elsewhere (my other devices are all connected by children's blocks and blutac so that everything is at hand and hides nearly all the cables - hence they are not easily taken apart).

I could imagine myself finding the all in one Live 3 to be a useful device to scratch that standalone (but still with tactile switches etc) itch, that would still be easy to transfer anything to my main setup later for extending ideas.

I can understand people liking or preferring other approaches, but I can definitely see a Live 3 in my future if the money gods are ever willing. I don't see it as that expensive a device after what I have spent on iPad apps and on Mac software.

With midi learn on Logic Pro now, can’t we just map those controls onto a launchkey mk 4 though?

Yup, you can map any DAW with MIDI-learn to a Launchkey, issue being the Novation software Components is still not available for iPad. But, AFAIK, if you map what you need on a desktop where you can save different settings on the Launchkey and recall them.

Check out Glenn Main below where he maps the MC-707 to an iPad using Midipad 2, https://apps.apple.com/se/app/midipad-2/id896879399:

I’m kinda with ya… Seems like Ableton Note on iPad is pretty much the best all in one solution to actually make music with any structure and AUM for basically noodling like a modular.

  • The pad articulation on each pad is really cool- I can't wait for that to get incorporated into Koala or for Akai to release a midi controller with that pad functionality. I think the TR-1000 is superior, albeit a different machine entirely. I just don't see the point of the Live Series anymore- if you're gonna have to stare at a touch screen the entire time, might as well use a laptop/Ipad.

It’s a DAW in a box , there was no way to avoid the touch screen . Also , a midi controller with ipad/laptop is totally different experience . (Not necessarily better or worse , it depends on many factors)
As for TR-1000 , it seems more fun to play , like an instrument :)

Thanks @DMfan :Also, sorry for the typos..I meant “controls onto a Launchkey”

It is a different experience for sure, but the functionality is the same. And, as you very wisely write it depends on many factors, YMVV. But given the limited resources/space/permissionfromspouse/whatever for me at least, I do think the iPad coupled with a controller of some kind makes an affordable and tempting combo.

I’m in the process of mapping Zenbeats to my Launchkey 61, making basically the functionality of a groovebox like the AKAI or the MC-707. If anyone’s interested, I’ll share the results.

  • You still can’t mix time signatures on the MPC Live 3 like you can on Logic Pro , Cubasis or N-Track …See 8:52 in the video..It’s universal for the entire song .

Long time MPC user here and have 9 of them ;-)

Whats absolutely incredible is on the new Live3 is the USB C Sampling/Tracking feature. As far as I understand it's basically like the iConnectivity w/o interface?

Does anything like this exist on other audio interfaces? I can't imagine that Akai has invented this.

  • The OP-1 F and OP-XY both do this. The Push 3 will also do it with the next update.

Boxes like the Dirtywave M8 can sample from a computer or iPad over usb too.
