I have been a fan of Tame Impala since their straight psychedelic rock days. Each release has been a drift away from that genre, but I just can’t get into this new one. The choice of doing a dance/electronic album was always going to happen imo, but the result was so underwhelming. For someone like Kevin who seemed to value and pour over sound quality over everything else, this just seems muddy, hollow, and rushed. Thoughts? Anybody else give Deadbeat a spin yet? Maybe I’m missing something/need to give it another shot…
Thanks for the rec! It is great!
I'm there with you. I really enjoy almost everything he puts out, but can't get much into this one. I must say I played it more as background music, so maybe I missed some details, but the general vibe is not really what made Tame Impala special for me. I'll give it a more thorough listen soon!
Dracula is a good track I think, catchy. Loser is also catchy but weak in structure, very repetitive, doesn't go anywhere. I've not listened very much to the album yet so will wait til I've heard more before deciding. Thing is for me with Tame Impala that I've REALLY loved some of the stuff they've done but a fair bit of it doesn't really do it for me.
I watched the recent Tiny Desk concert too btw and I didn't love the choice to go acoustic. I don't think these songs shine when stripped down like that. The production has carried a lot of the weight I think. Without that great production, you see the weaknesses in the writing. Kevin Parker is a very talented guy on multiple levels but I don't think he's a brilliant songwriter. Again though, it might just need repeated listens, acoustic versions of album tracks often take a while to get used to, similar to covers.
EDIT : The 2 videos below were supposed to be YT playlists, does anybody knows how I can remove the embedding so it won't play just the 1st track of the album?
Lately I have been enjoying Windows96. I don't know why I slept on this for so long.

Been revisiting this 11-year old gem by Damien Jurado ..

That Windows96 is like nostalgia mainlined to my veins haha. I dig it, what would you consider that so I can find similar stuff? Some offshoot of Vaporwave? Def an early Neon Indian vibe to it
It truly is!
From what I've gathered from a very short research, he's a bit of a special artist talent wise. And I agree, I've already listened to this genres playlists, but his stuff excites me musically a lot more. The good thing is he has like 15 albums or so, I'm still discovering him and try to get a better sense of his evolution. Here's a list of genres linked to him on the Discogs website if you'd like expand a bit : Vaporwave / Synthwave / Chillwave / Darkwave / Twilightsynth.
Cheers! those 15 albums should keep me busy for a while 😮
Also this if you got 40 minutes!

Big fan of Suede here. Last album is great
Wow, that was fantastic, it took me back to the 70s when this music reigned supreme, such a brilliant drummer and those vintage synths never sound old do they.
Thanks for sharing 🍻

This song introduced me to the shamisen - a very cool, plucky instrument. Some very fun j-pop.
A bit on the weirder side, but I like it!

I have to say that this is one of the most fascinating opening song
I just recently found out about Alvvays and now I'm hooked

The Meters — first two albums (instrumental).
This time of year I like to dig in to any of the numerous Lost Trail albums. A husband and wife duo producing a unique hauntological, shoegazey, ambient, americana infused sound that come off as some sort of rural dark ambience. At times blistering, haunting, intimate, ecstatic. Super cozy and good.

This wild duo -- guitarist and drummer -- using looping pedals, microtonality, and a truly dadaistic aesthetic has to be seen to be believed. Live footage here... Angine de Poitrine.

Been absolutely hooked on Oklou just lately
New infected Mushroom album is one of my favorites in a while. Reminds me of some of their older stuff.
