But are people ready to pay considering the iOS price is a fraction of the desktop price?
I don't think the work involved would be that significant. Other desktop devs manage - mostly - to design their apps in a way that touch response is not hugely problematic. I dunno, either do it right or don't do it at all, is my view
I guess you're not in Europa then as here we have 14 days to refund (Right of Withdrawal). You can always try to refund.
I already have. I might buy it again in a future version but as of now it didn't give anything I don't already got. It was fun to try though.
I’ve been on the fence waiting to see what the feedback was like, and it seems to confirm my initial reasons for hesitating, which is it’s not bringing anything particularly unique to the table that my existing apps don’t already cover.
I like the punchy bass drum sound, but I need more reasons than that before parting with twenty quid. Sample import, non-fixed channels, and deeper access to the synth engines and then I’d be tempted.
A pass for now.
I think they were initially right to only want to make a great drum synth -
with the valid argument that there are already multiple sequencers (including DAWS) for desktop & IOS ;
now they have given in to the requests for a sequencer they will have too many demands for their ongoing development time - sequencers are a blackhole of user requests for expected features -
meanwhile the fundamentals of the synth side still seem unfinished -
in addition to the many critiques above ,
my questions regarding velocity modulation from pages back have still not been answered .
So a less than great drum synth with a less than great sequencer is the result .
edit - let’s not forget Unfiltered Audio are still months into adding the additional full fat sequencer functionality users requested - maybe Baby Audio could have learnt from that .
edit+edit - also let’s not forget both companys come from fx & synth backgrounds , so building realtime sequencers from scratch is a whole new ballgame for both of them .
Fair points. I think the synth engines sound very good, for the most part, but I think @Slush is right maybe that the ride is a weak point. The sequence randomiser is very fun and produces some great results. It's just frustrating not to have a way to get those sequences out of the iOS version. A simple way to jump between multiple variations of a sequence would be a good start and would make it less frustrating that there's no midi out, and surely wouldn't be that much work to implement?
I kind of assumed Ableton Link was a default inclusion for MIDI related apps. That’s strange.
I miss the Ableton Link feature too, it would be a great addition to the app for sure!
The thing is this;
I spend a lot of time with Blip Box again, I love that thing! It's such a great little critter capable of lots of experimental stuff. It is great for techno/electro. No it doesn't do rides and cymbals well, but Tekno definitely doesn't do that as well either imho. Blip Box hats can hit hard. Fantastic for kicks, rumbles, basses and fx. With some external fx on Blip Box it can sound so bad ass and deranged and the UI (which I consider just amazing in it's simplicity) invites you to tweak, experiment and come up with weird surprises. If this thing had a sequencer with p-locks and some fx...... (I emailed to dev about this twice but never got a respond
).
After the launch of Tekno I was excited, but that tanked quickly after spending time with it and I hate to say that. It's jut too limited in synthesis and the UI annoys me. To me it sounds great upon the point when it comes to hats and there it goes downhill for me. The tweak-ability does just have its limitations and I just miss the straightforward Blip Box weirdness and creativity. I did not expect me to say this but considering the price of Tekno and the way it is now I feel it is an unfinished product I am going for a refund.. I am afraid an update will only adres some sequencer issues and that is just not enough for me to keep me excited with Tekno and take the risk of keeping it. I can pull off the same stuff and way more than that with just using Blip Box. The clap synth I will miss for sure. I hope it will improve in the future and have some features to it that truly makes this drumsynth a game changer.
I thought of Blip Box straight away when I heard the Tekno demos. The only thing stopping me using it is the lack of a randomiser - a bit of a slog setting up new kits, it’d be nice to get a head start with a random set.
Yes, that would be a cool addition, but I am not sure if it will give the best results as in useable percussion sets. You really need to tweak Blip to get a kick or a hat and what not, but in Tekno there are 16 synths and each synth engine has its own limited range so within that range you will most likely always get some interesting results. In Blip Box, use a preset you like and tweak it until you have something new, I think that's the best approach.
@oldsynthguy same. Although, my opinions might have swayed if I was part of the beta. I'll 9 x out of 10 buy the apps I beta.
I have all the prime iOS drum apps, and use them all regularly but I gotta admit- hammerhead has been more than enough, especially with the right sample kits.
I find myself using hammerhead as a backbeat and layering other drum apps along the top.
Like using hammerheads bass channel and loading Vancouver with 2 drum shots, or putting a gnarly high hat in clap machine and assigning it to hammerheads bassline.
Yah for me drum sounds are all about layering and I just find Tekno makes a great addition for this purpose. Unfortunately automation isn't working properly for me in BM3, does in Cubasis though.
How do you layer drum sounds in hammerhead?
I think they mean layering other drum sounds by using another drum app in addition to hammherhead.
After testing the desktop version I decided I didn’t like it very much. Mind you, it has some interesting sounds but I don’t like the UI and the fact that they seem to have ignored the standard MIDI drums map. That last item doesn’t seem like a big deal to some, but for production purposes it’s an annoyance not having compatibility with every other MIDI compliant program and plugin.
Normally when I see a drumsynth on iOS I need to have it. I had the same with Tekno but also had my eyes on a Pulsar-23. Thing is if I would buy a Pulsar-23, it would need to be in the same colour as my Lyra-8 (Green). Because the availability was a thing, I was building/ experimenting a lot in Drambo. Inspired by the sounds I heard of the Pulsar-23, I played with noise, spectral filters, crushers and different filters. I had a lot of fun and was quite satisfied with what I ended up with. Not only did I learn something during this process, it also shifted my focus from the ‘Latest new drum app’ to really enjoying the process and play with what I’ve already got.
With that said I found Motto Akemie and JPercussive some nice additions to iOS. I think there is still room for Tekno if you like the character of the sound. Hopefully for Babyaudio they can fix the things mentioned.
For me things went quick last week when I found a nice deal on a green Pulsar-23. Budget gone for the year but what an awesome machine!
The Pulsar seems like a cool unit. I have been drooling for a while on an Erica Synth Perkons, but it is expensive!
The initial version did not have a sequencer and it does not follow GM midi standard ? That a weird choice. I was going to buy it but it’s useless to me if it does not follows midi standard.
Hi everyone,
We are aware that the recently released preset packs are not behaving in Tekno 1.1 and will be looking to patch this as quickly as possible.
We appreciate your support — hope everyone is loving the synth!
To those who have purchased Tekno, how does it compare with FAC Drumkit? I'm a Baby Audio completionist and may get this sooner or later. But meanwhile just wondering what differences there may be.
Jakob Haq has a great rundown of Fac Drumkit on his YouTube channel.
In short FAC does its sound design with both samples and synthesis and you can mix the two together.
Tekno is all synthesis and has built in Fx and a sequencer the Fac does not.
I’d liken Fac more to SeekBeats as far as the “electronic” sounds you can get out of it and it’s wildly flexible envelopes.
They both have several different synth engines dedicated to each bit of kit. Both pale in comparison to the amount of engines that Battalion has.
Any plans to offer as an option standard MIDI drums mapping for these sounds? I can't even consider Tekno until this is changed. Even if you're offering non-standard sounds, you'd typically map them to lower and higher frequencies according to the placement of standard instruments.
And I will note that Fred Anton Corvest also did not implement this standard when he made FAC Drumkit, which really limited it's use for me after I bought it.
Thanks mate.
I should've specified I do have FAC Drumkit already (I'm an FAC completionist). And, I plan to get Tekno sooner or later.
But, for synthesized drums, I usually use FAC Drumkit and the Tokyo AUv3 from Gadget. (Yeah, that latter one is an extremely simplistic drum synth, but I get lots of mileage out of that.)
Hey Tristan - I just came here to ask about preset pack availability on iOS, and then saw your comment.
Has the preset issue been solved? Also, I can only find preset packs to purchase on your site. Will those work with the iOS version? I like the idea of presets for Tekno AND samples for my Digitakt.
Is it possible to bind the «effect sections» Synthesize/Effects etc to a midi CC? I would love to add some LFO action
That were my question.
Just where Im switching to samples of drum machines. Made host templates suits samples.
Not sampled if it were Battalian but havent bought yet.
Just wondered if you would need Tekno just for samples but not sure sure if you do with a Fac and Blipbox sample palette.
Plus it would be £30 I think just to gain samples ( for me )
I dont have to sample.
Perhaps I will finallly just use Drum machines as intended. Sequenced and on board sequencer.
My advice would be to stick with Blip Box, as you can pull out most sounds from it and even more wicked stuff. I have found the hats and most higher frequency sounds from Tekno to be too weak. Hopefully there will be an update. I do love the clap engine.
Thanks Slush.
Think I got my samples covered.
I can tell you, at least in my experience as of a couple days ago, the official desktop preset packs still won’t load on the iOS version.
