Dude has some good points. I can record on iPhone, shoot it over to iPad with everything the same(as long as my AUv3’s are on both devices), and mix using FabFilter stuff. It sounds at least as good a LP4i’s Mastering Assistant. BUT to the op’s point, n-Track does not have retrospective recording ability. For that I typically just arm a track and turn it on. I ramble away while it’s recording and if I like anything I just trim the bad part out, which is easy on n-Track.
Thanks, could you tell me which DAW (AEMS/Cubasis) has better crossfade support? Here is what I mean: https://youtube.com/watch?v=HLFMV7ae3TE&t=164s
@Jeezs Do you find N-Track to be a stable DAW? In my personal experience, it had many bugs, including forgetting/resetting the settings of its own plugins as well as AUv3 plugins. But your experience may vary from mine.
This☝🏼 Also, I tried the latest Cubasis over the holiday but went back to AEMS.
I swear, once Jamuary is done, I will test AEMS to see what it's got. I do like Cubasis 3 for mastering my tracks, but there could be something to AEMS that I haven't realized yet.
I need to give it a go as well. Maybe a collab is in order 😁
That would be pretty fun actually.
I wonder if Anickt can tell us if AEMS has a dedicated drum module in it, or if I'd have to use Koala Sampler for drums in AEMS (much like I'm stuck doing in Cubasis 3).
All I can say is, for me, it’s the “least clunky” and just doesn’t get in the way like the others seem to always do at some point. It’s not as elegant as many but once I learned my way around (docs are excellent) I found I can do what I want pretty easily. At this point I wish it handled automation better however, and I will be contacting the dev on that.
Cool.
Sounds like a good plan. Thanks for getting back to me about it, mate.
It has a drum sequencer track type if that's what you mean. It's not at all what I'd consider a Drum Machine though, and it doesn't really lend itself to sequencing AUv3 plugins either. It seems to be geared toward drum sound font presets, but I'm no expert in AEM by any stretch.
Don’t use the drum sequencer much. I tend to use the piano roll to sequence drums. I use One Shot and it’s brothers or Ruismaker. Or else I have thousands of loops and I’ll use a few of them. The time stretching is good. Or I might just make my own loops out of odds and ends. Good therapy. 😎✌🏼
I don't know enough about them to compare. I don't use standard DAWs much these days and do most of my editing with crossfades in Auditor.
I wish the drum sequencer would let you customize the notes for each pad and that it would let you open the plugin instance. It doesn't seem to let you open the plugin unless you convert to an instrument track.
So, I don't use it. Not a big deal to me since I don't mind at all sequencing drums in a piano roll. It's a deal breaker for many though.
Oh I don't mind sequencing drums in a piano roll myself.
I do that in Cubasis 3 with Koala. But then again, if there aren't any drum sample loaders in AEMS, I may wait a while longer to learn it. When I produce tracks, I usually use Cubasis, FLSM, Koala Sampler, AUM, Gadget 3, etc. Those apps I grok pretty well.
Thanks @Jeezs
I went with AEMS over Cubasis because of the price and because I didn't want to commit to a full DAW on iPad when I have a perfectly serviceable setup on the PC (senseless, I know). I've found AEMS to be capable enough, but I find myself having to click around a lot to do things that I just do intuitively in Cubasis. Coming from Cubase and Studio One on the PC, and going by the demo, Cubasis just seems a lot more intuitive.
And yeah, no drum sampler or any other sampler. A fairly decent synth and SF2 player though, and two nice synth IAPs from ToneBooster. And a bunch of TB IAPs at exclusive discount prices.
Which is why I've gravitated towards Cubasis as my mastering DAW, my vocal recording DAW, and sometimes my main DAW as well when I want to create a more complex piece of music.
I like those TB IAPs, but then again TB has their plugins as AUv3 as well, which is quite handy. I do wish Cubasis had an SF2 player, but it has IAPs chock full of sounds (including NeoFM, FM Classics, and the coveted Halion sound library).
I think the reason I didn't gel with AEMS is due to the fact there's so much clicking around a lot to do things. A pain in the butt. I like to work fast.
I arrange and mix in AEMS, where I would most likely need intensive EQing, so I was okay with the IAP TB EQ. The filter I wanted to use with other apps, so I went with the AUV3. An excellent selection of plug-ins, most/all of which are worthy alternatives to FabFilter's imo.
Same. Familiarity will probably reduce friction further. But some of the UI design choices we just have to live with, unless there is a near-total overhaul, which isn't reasonable to expect.
Oh now THAT I agree with. When I spent (I think it was) a year or two as an iPhone-only producer, I used TB plugins ad nauseum since they can be used on both iPhone and iPad, whereas FabFilter plugins are iPad-only. Then again, I am a TB and FF completionist, so I have all the plugins from both companies. I don't produce much iPhone-only music unless it's in Auxy Studio.
I think for one of my upcoming pieces of Ambient, I want to sample Flowtones for the drone. 😲 Thing is a bit of a modulation monster without being an actual modular synth.
Exactly, but then again, despite it being a slower workflow for me personally, the dev did a phenomenal job with AEMS! I can't believe (I think it was) one person created that DAW and continues to work on it steadfastly, for both iOS and Android. No small feat. And checking the appstore price, he's only charging $12 currently for it? Criminally underpriced. I already have AEMS and its IAPs, but if I didn't have those, I'd definitely purchase it all for a rainy day. Has a decent vocal tuner as well in it (another IAP, but really, it's a steal).
@jwmmakerofmusic @watari_banzai
As far as “clicking around” in AEMS, I find it much more intuitive than the others, so it’s no big deal.
Getting back to the Drum Sequencer track, I spent some focused time with it. Making your own drum-kits is as simple as importing samples from Files. Each drum has an FX Grid that uses app fx as well as auv3. An ADSR that also includes a low pass filter, tuning, and reverb each with an assignable LFO. Also, panning, mute/solo, volume fader. I think I don’t need anything else for drums and if I do I’ll give Octachron a go or use the piano roll.
I actually loaded AEMS into my MacBook Pro and it sort of worked. Better than I expected. But I’ll stick to using it on my iPad as that’s obviously what it’s built for! 😎✌🏼
Now this is excellent to know!
I'm glad there's a dedicated Drum Sequencer track in AEMS. Cubasis, as I said, has no Groove Agent or anything of that sort, making it lacking in the drum samples department.
Thanks for this post. It helped me find the functionality I was missing in the drum track. "multi-instrument" mode was what I needed to select in order to get past just using sound fonts. That wasn't obvious, nor do I think it was included in the manual, unless I missed it. That's a lot of power somewhat well hidden.
I'm having trouble getting imported files to show up. Any ideas?
I told you it was a good manual! 😎✌🏼
Thanks @anickt - I did miss it. Probably because importing samples isn't mentioned, but also because I didn't try hard enough. I'll check out the "please see here" as well. 😉
I'm out of ideas how to get my own samples to import. I go through the steps, but they never appear in the file browser. No matter. I'm not lookin' for a DAW these days anyway.
Also, any drum kits you create can be found under the Multi instrument category
Import samples to the app in general or to the drum track?
To the drum track. When I add a lane to the multi instrument drum track, I get the browser to pick a sound. If I choose to import, I can find a sample in the file system and select it. But when I select Open at the top-right, the sample never shows in the list.
But nvm - I don’t want to hijack the thread.
Can N-Track embed a GeoShred AU3 and record MIDI MPE from it without an external app like AUM or AudioBus?
As someone who is 100% committed to making music on iPad and has stopped using a computer for that, Cubasis is the closest to a computer DAW. Logic Pro isn't bad but I'm waiting to see if the subscription price will increase.
I've been wanting to try both AEM and the Roland DAW.
Roland Zenbeats is free to try. Though it's feature limited, it's probably enough to get a feel for whether or not you like the UI and approach.
