HALion Sonic Play is AUv3 so creating AUM projects with multiple channels of HSP with proper MIDI routing would sound a lot like a layered “Preset” and any channel in AUM can be automated for some Modulation FX of various “layers”. Still… I can see the benefit of editing Layers which really implies the DAW aspect is embedded in the sound module. Since, the typical Digital Workstation was constrained RAM/ROM limits on the older hardware layers could extend a 1GB ROM into hundreds of Presets… most of which seem somewhat cheezy by today’s standards. Still, apps like Korg’s iWaveStation continue to bring me great pleasure.

I won't make that decision for you, but just to clarify: the orchestra included in Iconica Sketch is based on a different library than the strings included in HALion Sonic Play.
You may want to check out our dedicated Iconica Sketch and HALion Sonic Play tutorials to get a better impression of the differences in sound and content.

Since there’s no instrument list available, anyone care to give a ballpark estimation as to the amount of real world instruments which are included as opposed to synth sounds and sound design presets? Any rough idea as a percentage of the whole would be helpful.
Also, I gathered earlier in this thread that the chord pads can’t be recorded as MIDI by the host app - is that correct? With every host?
@LFS will Steinberg address these MIDI shortfalls in what they (you?) are touting as a "complete workstation?
Will you even acknowledge that a user cannot either create nor edit splits/layers and arps? And will these pretty BASIC "workstation" functions be added in an update or IAP?

This is just ballpark figures from the factory content, not the expansions:
guitars:
about 10 nylon string and 5 steel string
bass:
20+ upright, acoustic, fretless, electric- pick and fingers
brass:
40+ sections
bells and chromatic percussion:
30+
drums:
a dozen acoustic kits and percussion sets
electric guitars:
only a handful, 4 or 5, that don't sound synthetic to me
ethnic:
10+ instruments, I am not familiar with all of them enough to judge their authenticity
keyboards:
too many rhodes and wurlys to count, probably 20, some may be emulations
organs:
about 40
pianos:
maybe 8 or so that sound pretty "realistic"
strings:
about a dozen "realistic" ensemble and solo strings
reeds:
20-30 sax sections, solo saxes, expressive flute, accordions
So that's over 200 instruments that aren't obviously synth sounds, although I won't claim to know how those presets were created. I'm guessing, if I were to go through every preset, I would find at least 250 "realistic" instrument sounds, 12-15%.
You may listen to these presets and think they are, or are not, "real world". I feel like I need to include this disclaimer.

gah. All i really want is clean electric guitar sounds. I was interested because it had a guitar harmonic patch, but I dont want to spend $ for one patch and 2GB of space.

Just pulled the trigger on this new HALion Sonic Play app, and wow! Impressive collection of instrument sounds! I haven't even made it through the acoustic guitar folder yet, as I've already found inspiration for some music.
These are going to prove quite useful for my compositions moving forward. Well done @LFS and the Steinberg crew!
I don't know if this been asked already but I payed for Halion Sonic Selection and I wonder if it's an extra discount for us who already own that when buying Halion Sonic Play. Or, do I pay as much as anyone who doesn't have it?
The toggling silence on the amp effects are still there so I'm not very happy with Steinberg but, I'm curious about the above.
If I remember rightly, @LFS stated that those who haven’t already purchased HALion Sonic Selection (IAP) won’t automatically have access to those presets and they must make a separate IAP to have them all available in the HALion Sonic Play, the cost will still be £14.99 whether you have Selection or not but you will only get the 900 Sonic Play presets. If Sonic Selection is deleted - all those 1100 presets disappear.

Does it have some good realistic choir ?
The choirs in HSP are vowels and a number I’d different words are sung, not really what I would call realistic choirs, but the choirs in HSS are more realistic, but what makes them sound better is having access to full filter and ADSR controls, you can change a gentle AHH into a abrupt (how do I write a abrupt AHH) lol

Thanks for the effort but I don't think that's correct. HSP will replace HSS so if you don't have HSS you can't buy it and the extra presets from HSP (320Mb) will never be available for HSS only.
You made me at least look for the article Lars referred to.
My conclusion is there is no "extra" discount for owners of HSS and I personally wont buy it then, and that's fine.
My apologies, I have just been through all the messages on the Cubasis forum and I do appear to got some things wrong, particularly where I wrote “@LFS stated”, this was incorrect and I don’t know where I got that information from! and I’m now more confused with what I found:
Steinberg's HALion Sonic Play for iOS (iPhone and iPad) features over 2,000 sounds/presets. It is available on the Apple App Store for an introductory price of $14.99 USD (25% off its regular price) during the launch promotion running until August 24, 2026.
This means if you don’t have HSS it doesn’t matter because you get all the HSS and HSP presets, but if I delete HSS IAP from the Store in Cubasis I will loose 1100 HSS presets!
I now understand the meaning to your original question.
