Song of the Month Club - June 2016
What is the Song of the Month Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. Instrumentals are fine, but songs with vocals are even better. A bad vocal is better than no vocal, so if you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.
We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material.

This is a song I've just finished.I wrote the lyrics and the melody many years ago (when life was being a bit shite as it sometimes is) but never really did much with them.I recently rediscovered them and finally took the time that I should have done long ago to produce it.Apps used Auria pro,Isymphonic orchestra,thumbjam, Igrand piano,Korg IM1 & Darcy of GarageBand fame on the drums!

Melodramatic tour-de-force Mister Leo. Was thinking I was getting a bit of clipping, but probably my headphones, did have it at full volume to get the full wrenching effect of it all
I like how you go up steadily through the gears on this one. Can easily imagine this being sung in a major Broadway or West End musical.

Hey, @LostBoy85: great ballad! The chorus melody is very strong, and the vocals are very good, as always. Congrats!
@LostBoy85 Your production skills are improving big-time, love that fat low bass and the music is very well executed. Great vocal performance as usual, I especially like the phrase where you slip into a brief falsetto.
The arrangement is good as well, with the dips at 1.30 and 3.30 adding some nice dynamics, and the piano in the outro is lovely. It's a very polished piece.
If you wrote and arranged all the music then congratulations, because it's a big step up from what you were doing 12 months ago and very well executed.

Here is our's for this month, it's probably as poppy as I ever want to get, but hey the sun is shining so sing along.
Threw this together over the weekend and am rather pleased with how it turned out. No vocals as of yet but that's because I am terribly slow at writing lyrics, so perhaps another version will appear in the future. FYI, no guitars were harmed (or even touched) in the making of this little gem, which pleases me to no end even though I love my guitars.

@oddSTAR I hear that -especially in the Old Cuntry- comparing anything to U2 is a terrible insult these days, but that's what I was put in mind of for the first 60 secs before the chunk guitar came, but then the next guitar at 1.30 brought me back to some unreleased imaginary album somewhere War and The Unforgettable Fire. I say all this as a positive ....and it's a nice enough rumble along. Blocs is particularly conducive to getting going in this way, but while I'M ALWAYS saying I'd like some vocals/words on stuff, this sort of piece, while accomplished in its way, needs a vocal for me to get beyond the first layer of understanding or enjoyment (or generic comparison). I think words, even in verse/verse/chorus/verse/chorus format bring the shape and tell the story in away the music alone cannot. For me. So, I'd say a good start, but perhaps asks more questions than it answers.

Regardless of using no guitars, @oddSTAR, you managed to create a song that could fit in a New Order or even Joy Division album, or one of the bands influenced by them (Editors, Bloc Party etc). Very impressive, and if you told me the "guitar" riff was a guitar, I'll totally believe. Congrats!
Hey, @orchardman: did Darcy play the drums? I have, for the sake of constructive criticism, to say that the fade out came a bit to early and proceeded a bit too fast. Other than this, a very good pop song, reminiscent a little bit of The Cranberries. Liked a lot the breakdown where the guitar plays the I-V-IV progression (sounded like a I(sus2) - I7M(sus2) - IV, which is the same thing. Was it the case?) with a very nice chorus effect. The mix is fine, the balance is good, and the singer's performance is outstanding as always. Keep it up!
Nicely done. Sounds like real progress with the mic/sound. I like where this is in the mix a lot, but then I can't say more than I really quickly forgot about 'the mix' and 'the balance' and 'the sound' and just enjoyed the song, wondering all the while about Henry's backstory. Great lilting and lovely vox. What a clear true voice she has. Apologies for (meaningless) comparisons, but couldn't help think about 'Everything But The Girl'.
A very proficient use of all apps listed and a good piece, @deltAdata. This is soundtrack-ish, and I can totally imagine it being used as the theme song of a Law & Order-like TV series. Good job!
@orchardman Nice song, the mix sounds a little too bright to my ears and the snare and the guitars are competing a little bit with the vocals in terms of frequency range - it might be the reverb rather than the instruments themselves though, but something doesn't sit right in the higher frequencies for me, there is a slight harshness there.
Nice arrangement, good vocal melody and also like the slight sense of melancholy in the vocal. It's good to hear more use being made of the voice with the subtle background vocals and harmonies. My favourite part is the break at 2.30 with the organ and guitar playing the chorused riff.
@trackedout despite it's very fucked-up nature there is a lot to like in this track: the vocal is really good, despite the distortion and being buried in the mix, the vocal keeps me listening throughout the track even though the words are pretty much indecipherable, there is a decent melody and a sense of yearning to the voice that makes it work.
The guitar breaks are great too, love some of the playing. The production is a bit too in-your-face and fuzzy for me though, even though I quite like a lo-fi esthetic the production here detracts from my enjoyment of the song, I think it would be better if there was more room for the elements to breathe, and for the voice to be more clearly audible, and for the overall effect to be less of an all-out sonic assault - save that for selected parts of the song rather than having it happen throughout.
It's a good song though, just needs a slightly more sympathetic production to bring it out.
Funny that @JohnnyGoodyear always compares my stuff to the Jesus and Mary Chain, because this is the closest thing to Psychocandy I've heard on SOTMC.

The core is build around Figure loops, but I added some Alchemy, Drumjam, iKaossilator and Turnado .
Arranged off iOS since I wanted to get familiar with Ableton. I love to fiddle with Figure but it is pain in the ass to export the samples and I am not quite sure about the quality of the samples and I got clicks too with the full volume set in Figure mixer ...
I wonder if the track is working a bit without understanding the words. It's from 1977 TV series "Rachotilkovia" when I was 5 and I remembered it forever.
Some of the words sound like
The whole world is full of sounds. And every sound has its rachotilko (noise spirit). We can see them (and speak with) only through the glass that once upon a time was made by master glassmaker.
How many such in the world? Only one. You're lucky that it's You, who discovered it.

@LostBoy85 : Wanted to swing back around and say that I loved the vibe of your track. Great atmosphere and instrumentation in there. Those strings...yum...and your vocals are like butter!
@trackedout : That track is really cool--I dig the overall sound and the raspy vocals coupled with that guitar tone really work for me.
@theconnactic : That is one crazy track...maybe crazy like a "tree ocelot?" I'm not really in love with the guitar solo around 40 seconds in, but everything else was so interesting that I had to listen through to see where it went. The break in the middle was a high point for me, but the opening and recurring synths are also very cool and I thought the guitar strums accented it well. Very creative work!
@orchardman : This piece made me think 10,000 Maniacs, for sure, which is a compliment in my view. Great instrumentation and a nice clear mix. The vocals are good and the lyrics certainly kept my interest, although there were a couple of places where I felt the vocal phrasing didn't track closely with the timing of the instrumentation which I found to be slightly distracting...but that was really a minor gripe. Overall, nice work!

The solo after 40'' - actually the theme melody, not a true solo; it recurs at the end - was made with the Nordestino (Brazilian northeastern) modal scale - an acquired taste, for sure. Glad you liked the synths: they were mainly Polysixx recorded into Auria, except for the "spooky meows" of the break, made with FF Twin 2.

@theconnactic I found the second half of the tune worked better than the first, especially the synth break at 1.10 which I really liked and the guitar riff that comes in after it.
Other parts of the song were a little too busy and disjointed for my taste, and the playing was not as melodic as some of your other entries, and also the electronic drums didn't really groove enough for me.
The middle section worked though, that was quirky and strange in all the right ways, and contrasted nicely with the intro and outro.

@trackedout hey dude I've gotta admit I really liked the vibe of this track.The drums and guitar sound so cool and buzzy! The energy is high and I love the style of your vocal delivery,very INXS I thought...
However,you've gotta give the listener at least a chance of figuring out what your singing mate and it's bloody difficult on this track.Theres no point working so hard to write good lyrics,sing until you finally get the take you wanted and then bury it with effects!
YOU CAN SING! Take the chains off that Ferrari mate and put your frontman where he belongs...up front!
Its just a few tweaks away from being BAD ASS!!

@theconnactic Hey man,what I liked about this track is that to me it sounds completely different to any of your other stuff that I've heard,its always nice to hear people trying new things every now and again,pushing the envelope...etc.
