here's my entry for June. Put together in Garageband - intro synth was a loop I found somewhere, internal GB bass, a Drummer track ... then a couple of teaser GeoShred licks before a tinkly electric piano riff kicks in. And then I had a friend do some lead guitar over top of the track - so real guitar lines from 1:40 to 2:36 and then I came in with some Geoshred licks from 2:36 onwards... I love GeoShred and always though it sounded close enough to the real thing - but doing this project and listening to real guitar vs. GeoShred side by side highlighted how much better the real thing is.

    m

Lovely laid back tune, interested to hear how you made it, contrasting the real with the simulated. It works well, maybe the guitars a little high in the mix at times, bit overpowering, but overall a great sound and deserves repeated listens. Well done!

Poems can be fine things, but have a tendency to the two-dimensional, which in and of itself (if you 'get' them), is part of their power. Mainline into the heart and head. But I've also spent a good amount of time explaining the feeling or meaning behind a poem and by then you're back in the classroom rather than a field (be it force or flowers). Not so good.

Putting poems to music can be a struggle, properly answering the question of 'is this a song or a poem'. Easy enough if you speak the words, as I have often done, but more uncertain if you choose to have a bit of a sing as well.

One of the puzzles of (romantic) love is the tremendous and certain power it elicits in people; not always suitably manifested or reciprocated. I hope the music here helps to suggest where the character in this poem is coming from....

    Love At First Sight

    Consider the cornea,
the shin bones and the thighs.
    The sound in her ears,
    the look in her eyes.

    The heart as it beats,
    her liver in function
    breathing and lungs
as they meet at the junction

    of all that has happened
    and all that will be
    and none ‘til this minute
    involving of me.

    It's love
    at first sight.

I was really getting in to this and it stopped! It's a lovely tune and needs a chord change and a verse/bridge/bit-in-the-song-that-I-don't-know-the-name-of lift at the end and it would be perfect. Lovely piano and the vocal works well in this tune. I know one should always leave them wanting more, but go on, another 45secs, finish it off... Great tune nonetheless.

Thanks for listen and the note Mister C. Yeah, it's short, maybe I'm the appetizer of song-writers...a mouthful or two and then whoosh, the bastard waiter's taken the plate away...

  • @fRAS Man! That was pretty bloody epic! I've been listening to a lot of M83 recently who I love and this reminds me of his stuff (especially with the French stuff going on) Really impressed and very pro sounding!

@fras hey thanks for listening, i can sit here imagining my music playing in diferent countrys and i dont know why that trips me out so much.. im not surr what u meant.. did u mean you liked the first mix afterall?

    Yes

Here is our's for this month, it's probably as poppy as I ever want to get, but hey the sun is shining so sing along.

Like that one. Vocal is the strongest part of this one, a great pop song, less folky than usual. Pitch control more subtle to my ear and works better. It's really well structured with a good duration and had me humming it afterwards, nicely done. I found the fuzzy guitar sound a bit too distracting where it is, but the sound on the solo guitar is really really lovely. Well done!

@crouchie thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you liked the song.

    Kinda reminded me of this
    Mean that as a complement

  • @trackedout There's an enchanting aroma about your voice both in style & delivery. It's quite intoxicating and completely suits your fuzz attacked song. Natural, unique, sorrowful...it grows on me with every song I hear of yours. I enjoy listening to it & you.

Another blistering tune from your stable that had me tapping my feet & air strumming my hands from the start. Nice little melody going on there & it flickers away at my senses. The solo flows perfectly & sounds just right with the feel of your tune. Roundabout is an apt title. Which junction do I leave at? None......keep on going till you get dizzy then go around some more mate. That's the point!

Did you say you drummed live? If so, good on ya! Reminded me of Stephen Morris (Joy Division) in its controlled frenzy. Also your bass drum had a hint of middle tom sound/ring to it which to me, emphasises his style even more with those tom flicks he used to do.

V1 feels hazy & harder. V2 after adjustments feels clearer. Both versions are very good but if a gun was pressed to my head it would be V1.....just.

This month... reaching outside the iPad. Using my Roland Juno-106 and a new TB-MIDI Stuff controller I made to automate it, and a Korg volca beats, and some funk uke. Between getting my Juno going and all the Prince inspiration in the air, I added a healthy dose of 1983-influenced app flavor... iSpark Linn Drum and iPolysix is in there too.

  • @gburks Uke for funk, who'da thunk? Gotta love the uke!

@deltAdata Interesting track. Liked the vid, except (strangely) for the presence of the ipad.

@JohnnieGoodYear Thanks for the brave track, but thanks even more for limerence. Btw, couldn't you name-drop more than Pound and Dada in short bit o' doggerel? That nets you only a 3 out of 10 on my arseometer.

  • @theconnactic Thanks Dimitri, I can rest. So glad you've written a song about fabulous felines. Hopefully they can clear out a small pocket of Moco's rodents you've left hiding out in my brain from a song before

I listened to a track of yours a couple of weeks ago on the forum. It teased me about which direction you were heading. It was different, more edgy & off the wall compared to previous I've heard. You've carried on that theme with the added bonus of a dash of electronica. Just enough to feel its presence & not outweigh the guitar magic. A very brave, challenging path for composer & listener. It works for me sir. Your mental guitaring from 2.10 is great & that break at 1.05 is jingly joy. I picture the cats scurrying, stalking hunting to this part. Good stuff.

Look forward to hearing how far you go down this route. All the way please, has my vote.

  • @deltAdata I'm with Leo on this. Your rhythm section is top shelf. That beat is obscure & kudos for being able to tie/glue your track together without the drums feeling they're from a different song. They keep me on my musical toes & I've enjoyed (unsuccessfully) trying to tap along to them. Really very good sir.

Cool, haunting music sounds perfect over your flicking effect vid which takes me into the world of horror films. The reflection coming from the screen prevents me from witnessing what app(s) you're playing. That's ok...nice edge to it even. This makes the whole experience mystical, magical, miracle like & thumbs up for that. Effective.

Sorry, more nail compliments...... My missus is jealous!

    Thank you very much, @Bluepunk!

  • sorry guys i just got some monitors and i racked one up id like to share with you guys just to listen to .. hope you guys enjoy it

  • @orchardman As you asked....I did sing along to your sunny pop song. Not very well but...
"I whistled a tune that's been going around my head." I did that too. Not very well but......
no matter because you & your wife have got the tools to create songs that allow us the opportunity to at least try.

Can hear you've been taming, learning your new mics boundaries & characteristics. It's worked & I hear/feel a smoothness about the vocal performance & production you should be proud of. Those harmonies are gorgeous & lots of small but noticeable vocal bits for our enjoyment.

Love the organ intro & throughout your song. The one panned left is perfect in the mix. The one panned right (3.05..the stabs) seems higher in the mix & pulled me too far into it. You've some chilled drummer! Almost horizontal in laid backness. If he/she really wanted to they could have added some fills to spice up the dynamics but maybe you didn't want them showing off too much.....especially if it's that Darcy Drumstick!!

You two make music that makes me wanna join in. I do. Not very well but........ No matter. You have it sussed out & can show us the way.

Ps. Why is that duck staring at me like that? Does he know something that i don't? That eye......sinister! Great pop song.

Edit. Just read the drummer was Mason. Sorry to you & Darcy!

  • @oddSTAR Great work......& all in a weekend! Your speed trial was a success. Congrats. First, I can't believe that's not a real guitar. How did you get that chunky riffage sound please? I'd love to know. I can see the apps you've used but I don't own any of those (apart from AB) & not sure which one(s) can get that sound after some fader fiddling.

Ah, that pumpingly deep bass riff & sound was cemented into my foundations from play 1. When that "chunk" guitar started it forced me to pick up a broom stick & rock out hard. Bloody brilliant sir!

This would be equally at home as a full blown, vocalised pop song or in instrumental form, as a soundtrack to a Grand Prix highlights show. Driving music with the lid down. Maybe the snare could have a bit more snap, depth, fullness to give it a tad more punch but that doesn't detract from the enjoyment I received from the experience.

I look forward to hearing your vocal version, how it changes the feel & dynamics. But, if you choose not to sing then send to Sky Sports F1 channel. Good luck with the singing.

Thanks @Bluepunk I'm glad you enjoyed it. The new mic is definitely allowing my wife to use her voice to the best effect and was a great investment. The organ is the Galileo app which I have had for years but never got round to using until now. We have used it on our latest song as well. The stab sound was actually an electric piano, I was hoping to get my wife to play piano on this song but she has managed to break a couple of fingers so instead you get me clumsily bashing away.

Not sure how we got from a weird picture of a duck to a song about a GI bride waiting for her man to return from war but you have got to take your inspiration where you can find it. And don't forget the duck is watching you :) .

Hope your wife's fingers repair quickly. Thanks for the info & good to see you revisiting dusty, old apps. Have a few myself! I'm trying desperately to shift that eerie duck eye from my scary memory bank but can't. I feed the local swans & ducks everyday but this evening I'm taking extra nosh.......and a flack jacket!

  • Well, I'm still behind on my reviews, but I was determined to get this track remaster out the door before I leave on a trip tomorrow. I'm still behind on reviews, but now I can write them while I'm on the road (theoretically).

  • @JohnnyGoodyear hey man,So il be the first to admit that some of your stuff lyrically is just too smart for me and goes straight over my head,BUT,this one got through to me and I enjoyed everything about it.The piano is ace,I like the subtle strings and the melody does a nice job with the limited time it has to work.I loved how you ended the song on "sight".Leaving the song hanging in the air, which I think is a very clever move and has power.

I think you've been listening to too much @Bluepunk though mate, cos I could swear in your opening line you sing "consider the corneaaah"!! :D :D

    Nice work mate.

  • @aaronpc Wow, congratulations, that was great! Imaginative, catchy, original.

  • @fRAS "Every sound has its own noise spirit." I'm intrigued. I don't know whether that's a comforting thing or not? Are there good & bad noise spirits? Being basic here......the popping sound of a new seal on a coffee jar would be a "good" one. Scratching a chalk board with a roll of barbed wire while having your front teeth drilled out, would be a "bad" one?

Sorry....back to your song. Groovy, danceable number that has an epic feel about its structure......& I don't just mean the length  That stubborn bass drum glues the fullness together all the way through. Could it have a bit more depth & less click? My ears really don't mind although the soul likes to feel it.

The section 1.24 to 1.43 is inspired. You've included the sounds of crickets, ducks (oh no...help), Predator & the bell from a 1971 Raleigh Chopper bicycle! Excellent. Not understanding the words, completely works. It's effective & different. I like the icky stop at 6.21. Because of its length, it's good to pause for breath now & again.

I'm a Noise Spirit virgin but I'm sure they are happy & fulfilled with the noises you've created here.

  • @crouchie said:
Might have a month off trying to bloody learn how to use Cream and Modstep (not going well so far mind!) but happy to keep reviewing!

You are a gentleman sir! Looking forward to your July return. Good luck.

  • @Halftone Love your intro. Particularly that evolving, gnarled sound every few bars. Gives it a darker more threatening feel that I liked. GB Bass sounds lovely. It's a great instrument & you've reminded me that I should use it more. Which drummer did you use? Were they from GB also? They don't drop sticks & do an efficient job but like Mr Goodyear has already said, some variations would be good if you revisit. Can hear huge, power rolls at the end of some of your beautiful guitar lines to highlight the intensity.

Wowzer......you can play that GeoShredder alright! Star of the show. I can hear & feel your enjoyment as you lick away skilfully. The real guitar work is top notch & yes, you can hear the difference at handover time of 2.36. But......nowhere near enough IMO for my ears to say that it's not a real guitar. Well done! It sounds authentic & possibly, could be set lower in the mix......there's a lot of shredding to enjoy here.

Any plans for vocals? Some broody, sparse words weaving in & out of the licks may work.
No matter cos it's a fine tune that you've crafted & an enjoyable listen.

  • Hi guys! My song this month is about Annetta Reed, her tragic voyage, and her unworldly return. Enjoy!

  • @JohnnyGoodyear You & words are married! The sheer powerage you manage to eek out of any word (including and, the, it, was etc) is testament to your knowledge & skill....your talent. Only you could come up with a first line of "consider the cornea!" I mean, there can't be another song that uses those words......& why would there be? Brilliant.
Poetry? Song? IMO this is a song. It's got music, words that are sung & that'll do. There's no confusion in this camp.......song!

Limerance. That aching need. Addictive quality of joy & pain it dishes out in the same moment. Yeah....been there as well & I'm glad you've written about it. One of those "unmanly" subjects that most blokes will boast that they've never experienced....like depression!

The sorrowful, sad music, played & arranged perfectly in tune with the subject matter, only adds weight to that desperate need & hope of receiving the same intensity of feelings back. Save your emotions.....get rejected....isn't that the point? Feel that high baby....feel that hurt. Delivery of your vocal cleverly emphasises the insecurities that this involuntary condition brings. A naivety, a charm gently exhales with every word. I felt & get it.

Thanks for reminding me of those heady, emotion filled times......& the snubs & rejections. Feel the pain? I do. Excellent.....emotionally charged pain is good for the soul.....I think?

Thanks, markk! Congratulations to you for actually finding it in the thread. It seems my tendency to post late in the month has assured the track's obscurity.
