No problem. I really think it deserves a wide audience. I've listened to it a few times and my admiration grows with each hearing. I checked out a few (didn't have much time) tracks on SoundCloud. Impressive.
I'm curious to know how much of this was done on iOS.
@aaronpc Great to hear you back. I've only heard a few of your SOTMC tunes but already, to me, you have sculptured a style & sound that is easily recognised as an aaronpc song. Kudos mate. Apart from it being a cracking, imaginative composition, what stands out is your vocal delivery. You sound so comfortable & at ease singing. Each phrase sounds different in how & where you fit your lyrics to the music. Very good.......very talented.
Musically, you kept me incredibly interested (& a tad jealous
) throughout. So much to admire. It's all good, no....very good & especially the part at 2.50. The dynamic change there, paired with the happy, celebratory feel of what follows, sent warm tingles of joy down my crooked spine.
I couldn't make out all your words......and I really wanted to but maybe that was your plan....your vision...or more likely, my shot ears! Other than that, you've mixed with a deft touch so we can enjoy all your creativeness that shines through in droves. Oh yes sir.....oh yes!
@aaronpc sorry for the delayed response to your track, I needed a few days to absorb it and I didn't want to respond too hastily - it's a quirky track and I suspected it would benefit from some time to grow on me.
I'm a big fan of your stuff, and my initial reaction was that maybe the melody wasn't quite as good as your usual standard, but after a few days of gestation I am warming more to it. The vocal delivery is very reminiscent of Sparklehorse to my ears (and that's a big compliment).
The story is quite hard to follow because the vocal is mixed quite low, but I really like the bits that I can hear, and the ebb and flow of the music helps to give it a sense of being an evolving story. I like the first half the best, with the piano intro, the whispered vocal, and the melody you sing.
But I really like the quirkiness of the track, it's overall weirdness and the sense of innovation and discovery that permeates throughout.
@TGiG The first half builds the tension of the impending threat to all on deck. The string stabs act like a rhythm section, slowly but surely assisting with the feel of somethings not quite right on board. The guitar sounds as though it's come from the set of a Western film. This added a small grey area to the subject matter. After a few more listens, the guitar settled & it does fit the underbelly sounds. Maritime murder with a smidgeon of "For A few dollars more."
It's when you kick in those "off the wall" drums with those screechy, scary sounds that the threat level increases to red. Changes up a gear.....but no full steam ahead this time! This is the part where I can feel the jealousy.....the rage & anger of that unstable geezer. The result of Limerance (I refer to Mister Goodyears track) maybe.....again?
The chaos that all must have experienced on board is described well through your music in the last part & signals the beginning of the end. Not exactly what Annetta & Hubby had in mind for their honeymoon cruise. That you found the inspiration to write about this event in the first place gets applause from these shores. Nice one.

I understand the quirky/left field comments I guess, but this is right in my happy wheelhouse. Great song. Like everything about it. It has a personality all its own and that's about as far up the praise tree as I can get. But that in and of itself can be said of many things that one doesn't actually, really, like. This piece makes me tap my toes and feel lonely at the same time. Music and emotion combined. As a side issue, any tune that starts off and before the vocals come in I can easily imagine Thom Yorke or Green Gartside singing on sets a high expectation standard, you met that. Good work.
Would like the strings a bit more drunk at the start, they seem just a little too clean and perfect, but def. Mister Leone Goes To Sea And Very Bad Things Probably Happen and by the time the drums come in I want to be in the club that's playing this at about three and there aren't many of us left there, but somehow we all seem to know that while we might be lost brothers not all of us will make it out alive.

@markk Not much iOS on this one, I'll admit. All my songs start on iOS now, but they still end up on the pc for finishing. On this song I replaced a couple sounds, but some of the midi arps and voice layering and effects would be really tough on the iPad. I also really like to clone midi to multiple tones at once- easy on a pc but the only one that does this easily is iM1.
@Bluepunk @richardyot I'm surprised you couldn't make out the lyrics. Do you mean the chorus? I pumped up the lead vocal's volume quite a bit during this remix, but the chorus might still be tough to make out with all the effects, I guess. The last two loops of the chorus at the end are intentionally jumbled. I like how it disorients the listener, but I'd be interested to know if I'm the only one who enjoys this part.
@JohnnyGoodyear High praise- thanks much! I remember points whilst making this one where things just fell into place and gave me that little buzz feeling we're all after. Sounds like you got a little of that buzz and it's nice to see how that can carry over through time and space.

My entry for the month. Not my best unfortunately, a mediocre tune and a lackluster vocal performance. If I was releasing an album, this one wouldn't make the cut
Having said that I've been on a good run and written a few decent songs so far this year, so I have to hope I do better next month.

@richardyot Yes, you have made some memorable, great tunes this year & as a listener, not composer, I think you're being a bit harsh on yourself. "This time" IS a decent song.
How did you achieve the Wah Wah, almost vocal sound in the intro? What grabbed me was your bass guitar. Yummy, menacing riff there & it sounds so full & powerful. Also complements the bass drum pattern very well.
There's something, or someone simmering away & a growing broodiness I sense from the verses. Festering & multiplying underneath the surface ready to explode into both happiness & deep depression at the same time. Your lyrics strike a chord with me.....probably an E..............or two
The verse " you blow into my life" is particularly poignant & describes the situation this person has fallen into very well indeed.
The dynamic changes from verse to chorus & back are subtle but apparent. Helped by....sorry, is it a synth? That sound is particularly dark, deep & threatening. Like a dealer clearing his throat before screaming "No fucking chance pal" after asking him for a loyalty discount on the Charlie! I gave it a shed load of listens & think that this would make a good album track because it's a good song.....yes it is! Maybe a revisit in the future will sort out the bits you don't like so much. Is this a Richard drum track or did Darcy offer you a "drum one.....drum one free" offer.
Again, as a listener....I enjoyed it.
I really liked everything about the backing. Voice was off. It sounded like you hadn't made a final decision on how the melody should go and were making changes mid-note.
@richardyot Yes, this feels a bit like a training run. Getting the miles in the legs (which has to be done). I could tell you what I don't think is quite up to your usual snuff, but I sense you know better than me already. I admire your keeping on though, which I think is the heart of SOTMC. It also reminds me that it's unrealistic (and bloody hard) to keep topping a previous effort. Probably counter-productive too. Sometimes one has to take the step back to step forward etc. I believe this completely but find it hard to not lose heart. BUT, as with most things, the first rule is always: Just turn up.
I enjoyed quite a lot the synth effects in the intro, @richardyot! The lead vocal could benefit of a little double-tracking, but the melody is very good. The phantasmagoric pad just after the first chorus was very well chosen. The song deserves a proper ending!
Oh, a question: is Darcy a regular in your band?
First of all, @aaronpc, I liked the saturation effect you employed in the verse's lead voice. Very well done. All the synth tones are very well chosen, and the beat is very enjoyable. Congratulations!
Very nice, the time signature change, @TGiG! It reminds me a little bit of 70's progessive music. It also could be a very good theme for a mystery TV Series. Alas, I noticed that your last songs have this soundtrack quality. Good job!
@Bluepunk the intro synth was an Animoog patch which was then fed into Model 15 for further filtering/modulation. It's quite easy to get wah-wah like effects with Model 15 if you modulate the filter with a sine wave from the sub-audio range of the oscillator. (Now there is a sentence I wouldn't have written a few months ago, it doesn't even sound like English).
The bass riff is just about the only thing that is any good in the song, and was the first bit I wrote. The synths used are Animoog and Model 15 throughout, except for some ghostly pads from Eerie (new synth that came out recently) in the intro, but I'm becoming quite the Moog fanboy.
@JohnnyGoodyear turning up is the name of the game, even if you're not having your best day. Everyone writes a dud now and again, best to get them out of the way and start the next one. If it wasn't for SOTMC I wouldn't have posted this one, but I had to because of the rules of the club
@theconnactic yes Darcy is a fully paid-up member of the band, along with Bob (Moog). I don't really like any of the other drummers in GB though, and I'm obviously going to run out of road with Darcy some day, but it's very hard to match that drumming with something like DrumPerfect Pro unless you invest a lot of time creating all the fills etc..
Anyway, I'm glad this track is out of the way, I was really sick of listening to it. It's the opposite of a grower, the more you hear it, the more tired you get of it
That's why the ending was so bodged, I didn't think it was worth investing any more time into working on this particular sow's ear.

You know, I absolutely agree with you. I wanted the strings as a solid foundation and I tried to "un-quantize" them but couldn't find a solution. I purposely made everything else a bit "drunk", as you say, but the something need to hold it together in my opinion. Oh well! Thanks for your review!
