  • In other news: Not certain I've come across such a duality in personas as Rocky Smalls and Stockhausen :)

  • My question how fast does it render on an iPad 2 in comparison with FCP running on MBA 2014 (i5). Anyone?

  • Now all we need is an excellent marvellous and sophisticated video synthesiser, with a useful variety of models and synthesis techniques.

yes beta tester for last 3 months.. and as a lurker on this here forum i seem to have found myself in the advocate role... which in this case i don't mind.. i think you are the kind of ipad-centric guys'n'gals who will squeeze some creative juice from this particular xmas satsuma. 'open in' importing from audioshare, wav, aac, mp3 all work great cut n splice as quick as tapping with two fingers either side of the cursor. keyframable audio levels and some discussion about getting some more keyframe audio fx in there too.
i used to be a cute cut pro fan...! but this is way slicker, not much to fault workflow wise..

Cool, great we get a chance to direct questions at someone who's used an app as opposed to vaguely wandering in the dark. It definitely looks great and encouraging to see AudioShare import. Looks like the developers have done their homework! Great.

Agree with this. More than anything (for me) is the sense that our guys have of the fact that work is ongoing...these days commitment/involvement from devs is almost my prime directive etc.

I thought they went a bit high on the price. Around $30 with a $15 launch would've been a little more inline. IMHO

So $20 at launch ain't too bad.

They seem absolutely committed and I don't think this is a side project. All their eggs are in this LunaFusion basket. And, they say their target audience are those who make money from video, professional video vloggers and reporters in the field.

On their roadmap is even more audio control and editing within the app, like auto-ducking and such.

  • Think I'm going to take the plunge on this too. I'm a visuals person but don't touch visuals on iPad much yet. It would be ideal if this would be able to export project to after effects or premiere with layers intact. But I don't expect that's likely to happen. However looks great for sketches.

  • What makes LumaFusion different has lots of useful information about the app and their future plans.

  • Got a quick reply about Pinnacle desktop & IOS import from Luma Touch :

"The initial release of LumaFusion does not have project import/export (only movie export). In an upcoming update we will add this support. We do intend to support import of Pinnacle IOS projects, and we are still deciding which desktop editors to support for export (FCP, Adobe Premiere, Media Composer, Pinnacle)."

& then after reply thanks , quote permission & further pleading :
"Yes, it is ok to quote this, and we will seriously consider providing Pinnacle Desktop export"

Sorry off-topic, but do you know any iPad video editors with alpha channel?

I think that's coming, but I was able to knock out a transparent alpha channel in a still image in Procreate, save as PSD or PNG and retain the transparent still alpha channel layeredl in LumaFusion

Mister Hunt, you're a visuals fellow, what's your gut instinct on this one?

I was also a beta tester for the last couple of months. Gives you a great deal of control. No other video editor allows you to work with layers and keyframeable fx. Developer seems to be on the ball with constant updates and fixes. The roadmap of more features looks rich. Price is higher than I thought they'd go, but at least they didn't go subscription which is what they were originally considering.

If you're just doing the basic transition cuts, with some "look/style" filters... The app called "Vee" is good. It also allows you to import in a soundtrack from AudioShare. Outputs 4k too. Quick and good, but limited control. It's also often free with some style IAPs.

There's another one called "Quik". If you don't want to style, or have a lot of control, but want some good "automatic editing" ie. you pick a general style, and add your clips.. "Quik" is good. It also outputs 4k and allows you to drop in our own audio. Not much control over the audio though. Quik used to be "Replay" and was heavily promoted by Apple. It wasn't free, and for extra "pro" features you had to buy IAPs. They sold out to GoPro to become Quik... then made it free.. which aggravated me. They have regular updates, and good results, but not that much control. Their algorithm does most of the work.

iMovie is decent for basic stuff and has some baked-in styles and effects, but the lack of user control can be frustrating. It also doesn't play well with others with regard to connectivity... kinda like GarageBand.

Pinnacle Studio Pro was originally owned by Avid (high-end industry standard for professional film/video editing) They sold it off to Corel, who outsourced it's development to LumaTouch. LumaTouch took PSP from a little bit clunky editor, to a more streamlined product capable of near pro-level projects. For some reason I'm not privy to, LumaTouch handed back the development of PSP to Corel, and broke out on their own to to LumaFusion. They also created LumaFX (all of which is built-into LumaFusion). PSP also exports in 4K, has good transitions and performance. You can also bring in your own audio mix but not much control over it. Until now, the only video editor you could export a high-res or low-res video to copy to Auria Pro, was Pinnacle Studio Pro. In AP, you can edit your audio, add more tracks, etc. Then bounce your new mix back into PSP.

LumaFusion also allows you to export to AuriaPro, edit, and bounce your audio soundtrack back to your video edit. They seem to be committed to making their LumaFusion the defacto professional video editing platform on the iPad. It's also universal. It's the only video editing app where you can stack layers and keyframe animated changes to video effects that interact with the layer they're stacked on. I think up to 3 layers in 4K. More in HD. You can keyframe the levels changes on each audio track that are also layered. LumaFusion is the only app that allows you to work with layers. You can choose the output you want on export, ie. you work on your project in kind of a proxy mode and decide what resolution you need on export... meaning if your source is 4k and you want your master to retain 4K resolution, but you only need a web-friendly low-res version now, you can simply choose to export in low resolution for smaller file sizes. There's a good titler built in, and you can keyframe those and/or apple effects to those too. For Pro-Level video editing, on the iPad/iPhone today... for the most control, speed, and quality... I think LumaFusion is the top of the heap.

    Great overview, thanks for this.

I was going to spend any Xmas vouchers (assuming I get some) on music apps, but this one will get my money - presuming the sale price is still on tomorrow

  • Based on the information posted here and what I've read about the experience and responsiveness of the developers and their plans for the future of this app, I am going to pick it up at the introductory price.

  • There was a question as to whether there was any reason to have LumaFX if you have LumaFusion (that has it built-in). I asked the dev because I couldn't remember for sure. LumaFX allows you to crop videos, but that's not in LumaFusion yet. However, they say it'll be adding that to LumaFusion as well. So, if you've been thinking about LumaFX and have extra $, then you might as well just get LumaFusion and get a full editor with keyframing and layers.

Where did you read that? I'm a FCPX user, but my pro-editing friends who cut reality TV at network/cable/broadcast level and feature films, either use Avid or Premiere Pro now. If they plan on Premier Pro export, that's significant.

Awesome! I hadn't seen that. I knew they were planning on masking and I'd asked for layer blend effects that evidently are coming too. I also didn't know they were planning on the import of LUTs. That's very cool too.

LumaFusion was designed from day one to be flexible and allow for new features in the future. We’ll be adding advanced compositing effects like chroma keying, Photoshop blend modes and masking. Advanced color correction including import of LUT tables will be supported. We’ll also be adding export to desktop editors like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere.

Isn't that included yet? That's a useful feature for me, the ability to use different types of overlay (as per Photoshop etc.) effect, e.g. multiply.

  • @supadom An embittered heart from previous updates leaves me waiting for at least the Spring , if not the threat of September's new onslaught .
I'm also in betatesting mode , & my 9.3.5 has been useful .
10.2 All ok for you then I guess ?

Story of all our lives (so far). As regards the app, spent half an hour turning the Missus multi-colored and making her sound like a chimp on speed inhabiting a witch. Very straightforward UI mostly. There are no doubt things upon things within it, but reassuringly easy to get the film moving...Apple pencil (other options are available etc) does a very good job with the smaller buttons.....have to go off and eat hot cheese (they call it fondue), but will be taking the Big Boy with me in hope of a quiet corner. May actually throw a few games of pool just to get some editing time...

It's fun to play with the fx that leave areas black... like "Hole" "Big Hole" "Small Hole". The black areas are actually alpha channels exposing the video or still underneath that you can keyframe control the size and location of. If you look at this recent testing video I made with LumaFusion, the part at the end where there's a sphere shape moving about the screen, distorting and exposing the layer beneath, was done this way. I could've also had an second keyframe animation going for the still image exposed or it could've been a video with it's own keyframed animation going on simultaneously.
