  • Is ableton link the only way to sync this? Because it doesn't sync for me with IAA. (My goal is to use it along with Cubasis)

just use audiobus 3 to sync them both. should get the midi into cubasis easily enough.

As soon as I select Gadget in out from future drummer it crashes every time.

I think there is a problem with the outputs....select Future Drummer as the output in the app, then in Gadget select Future drummer as the input (turn advanced midi on first). This Works. Remember to turn the master down in the mixer of FD if you only want external sounds.

I also wondered about that. Why is Gadget listed in the out section? I had it working when i choosed FD in the output as well.

Pretty sure something is broken in the implementation of midi outs. Selecting any other app port causes a crash. That being said there's no problem using the futuredrummer port so it's no biggie.

Lol. I think it's becoming clearer why iOS music apps are priced the way they are.

You could also use MIDI Link sync, send MIDI clock from Cubasis to MIDI Link Sync, and then use that to keep FD in sync.....
If it works in AB3 then this would be a simpler solution.....I'd be interested to know how Cubasis sync behaves when in AB3, i could never get the MIDI clock to sync properly with Beatstep when using looped playback in Cubasis.

Yep. Instant crash if you choose any 3rd party app port.

I'm also getting an instant crash if I try to recall a user groove that i've saved. Anyone else getting this?

And the midi out note page is odd - seems like it forgets the midi out notes you've selected when you return to it. But actually _ i've discovered it is still sending on my selected notes from my last session, even though the UI shows the factory set-up of notes. Needs some TLC I think.

That said - despite the bugs - i'm loving this app. My new second favourite app (because: Gadget :))...

  • I love this addition too, but (along with a few others) I'm putting on the back burner until 1.1 arrives.

It works for me loaded in Cubasis as a normal IAA app. Just be sure to disable Link in Future Drummer before adding it to Cubasis. SOmetimes the initial note or two may be wonky but smooth sailing overall, I have used it this way a lot.

Does it time locked reliably when cubasis is in looped playback ?

Thanks I'm going try this tonight... I've been recording FD into cubasis with both apps loaded in AB3 using the audio chanel routing in cubasis which is not too bad but I have to commit to the results or start from scratch.

I'm also getting instant crash when choosing gadget as a midi output.

I think within Future Drummer I just selected Future Drummer as the output port and in Gadget chose Future Drummer. Recording FD in Gadget is pretty sweet.

Trying it again right now on latest iPad. It seems if at any point it is loaded into Cubasis with Link on then yes, things can be screwed up. If I quit all apps, run Future Drummer by itself, turn off Link, reboot ipad, then it syncs perfectly in Cubasis. it seems if at any point in a boot session it has Link on while in Cubasis it may all go to crapo.

Right now I am synced up with Egoist slicer/drums and bass sending to Nave. All in Cubasis on latest iPad, perfect sync. I could record each drum sound independantly if I wanted to right now. it is that tight.

I'm actually loving how well it works with ableton drumracks. Best part is you can just drag and reorder a kit in ableton in a few seconds tops. it also works pretty well with modsteps sampler. now all i need to do is import a bunch of sounds in there :D

I haven't tried this yet, but keen to try when I get back in town to DAW. Guessing your sending via studiomux or modstep to Ableton?

i own an iconnectivity Ica4+ so ableton is pretty much a permanent part of my setup when i'm home. studiomux works as a good alternative but the latency used to piss me off lol. then again i'm one of those insane people that wants <3ms latency when recording. wierdly enough futuredrummer doesn't crash when you select hardware midi ports as an output. and the Ica4+ has a direct midi port between the 2 devices connected to it.

Wow good sleuthing...I disabled link, rebooted and now sync doth function with Cubasis

Now I just have to solve the instant crash when using Song mode with GarageBand

Oh damn. I have modstep and studiomux.. which may work ok, but the "latency" of setting those up to Ableton is often a flow killer! Cheers for the info

To be fair. While using studiomux I used to let the latency be as is. And just fix the midi and audio clip timing in post. Heck. I still do it with my ICA4+ while mixing "live". I just go super low latency when I'm ready to commit to audio. One "hack" you could use is to keep record quantisation on in ableton.

I think you misread me young Proto....I have -of course- paid in full for these apps, but find them a little 1.0 and thus am patiently sitting back -true to my essential Candide nature- and expecting positive things to happen as a result of my own good faith :)

  • Cognitive dissonance! I do whatever Johnny or GoneKrazy say. But they are disagreeing!

It's a little more spendy than most drum apps. But if it has foolproof midi out? @gonekrazy3000 : You're running this into Gadget and using Recife and London. Will it work with Tokyo, which I'm realizing is my favorite drum app in iOS? Will it easily work with SeekBeats or Ruismaker or — gasp! — Impaktor?

It will work with Tokyo and Ruismaker. You will just have to either remap the midinotes or assign the pads in Tokyo to the correct sounds. Ruismaker works fine if you enable gm midi but some thing that apple did in the move to IOS 10.3 seems to have made the Ruismaker only use the gm mapping for the first instance. I love Futuredrummer. But I get why some might be hesitant. In my case my main Use is actually to send midi to ableton drum racks. Where I have tons and tons of drum kits that I can just drag and drop exactly what sounds I want to the pads being triggered.

The Ableton aspect seems cool, and something I think I'll gravitate toward. I'm kind of leaning toward a piece of gear — either the Push 2, iMaschine or an MPC, since it seems there's no real good option on iOS for chopping and playing samples. But that's a topic for a different thread.

    • FutureDrummer uses GM drum kit mapping by default. It can be overridden in the app, but the process is cumbersome, may reset between sessions1, and are global - meaning you can't save different ones for different setups.
    • Ruismaker can be set to use GM mapping, but defeats a nice feature, and may screw up any tracks you have sequenced with the other mapping.
    • Gadgets don't use GM mapping. They use the notes sequentially from C3 for however many pads they have. So, with only 4 pads in Tokyo, you would be missing a lot of notes.

So, my conclusion was that putting a midi mapper between FutureDrummer and Gadget. I don't really like it but that's the best I could come up with to use it practically with several apps. One map for each using MidiFlow (not the internal AB filters, the standalone). With MidiFlow, you can save each as a "song" so it's easy access once set up. In fact, if you wanna get fancy, I think you can select MidiFlow "songs" with program change messages.

Not that I'm gonna take the time to do that for any practical use, but I have tried it for sake of curiosity, and it works.

I think i just fell in love even more. never realised how amazing modsteps sampler was since i literally never used it.
dumped a ton of awesome drum samples all nested in folders according to catergory inside modsteps folder structure using iFunbox and when creating kits it all works beautifully. creating a new kit when recieving midi from futuredrummer its as simple as dragging and dropping the audiofile i want triggered into each pad. best part is duplicating the kit 8 times with muting the sounds i want per layer and you have a 8 layer multi audio out sent to AUM for further processing.

  • I cant wrap my head around this FD to Gadget Ableton Live link thing. Why do I have to link them in the audio tab of AB3? When its MIDI i want to link? Unlogic for my head to understand

I am just using FD straight to Gadget, nothing else involved......The only reason to put them in AB is if you want to mix and combine the audio output of both, or to use IAA sync. If you are using Link for the sync and recording the MIDI output then no need to host the apps in anything

Yes indeed, ModStep is a gem, it has so many different uses
