What are the benefits (if any), of Beathawk over BM3?
My finger is poised above the SPA ‘Buy me now’ button, but I want to exhaust all other possibilities.
Whooo boy, that little question could become a monster thread itself. In a nutshell? BeatHawk is a tiny, tiny subset of BM3's capability. It offers AUv3 ability to work in multiple instances as a sound module and or sequencer, it has far superior (IMO) IAP sound sets available, and its red-ish. That last one is important if you're jamming out on a nuclear submarine and don't want to ruin your night vision.
Based on your feedback on both the SPAu and apeMatrix threads, I think SPA would suit you better. Beathawk is great, but I don't use the extended capabilities (piano roll, instruments, etc.) very often. Mostly it's just an AU drum machine for me.
The red thing is obviously very important, but I didn’t know about the AU thing. Can you host multiple instances of the sequencer in AUM, and trigger other apps as per SPA?
I’d be interested if I could use it as an AU piano roll sequencer version of SPA, not fussed about using it as a sound module or beatmaker though.
I’ll have to check some vids, lookee see before I plunge for SPA.
While it DOES work, I've found it to be a bit clunky, and I have a hard time working with the MIDI in BH. That's just my mileage, though - may not be others.
I personally have found BeatHawk AU as promising but not a great user experience so far, seems to lose time and UI doesn't update very well so it's frustrating, but in theory it works. On the other hand SPA AU works flawlessly in comparison.
Cheers guys. Didn’t know it even did this. I’ll check some vids later but I’m edging closer to SPA by the minute...
I would like to see what someone like Bram Bos could do with an AU midi recorder / player. I like his design ethos.
As for BH, I forgot how awkward I find it now, but at least it’s more options. Back to the fun I’m having with SPAu - so glad I bought it again.
Yes. It can even send multiple different sequences to different midi channels all in the same AU instance.
BH piano roll is a bit awkward but not too bad once you get the hang of it.
^this.
I think it’s pretty good as a sequencer. Nice that it runs on iPhone too. I’ve found that using AUM ‘s transport control rather than the one in BH reduces any sync / update issues I’ve seen.
Way less learning curve for SPA, IMO though.
I’ve just dived into BM3, to see how that would work, and half an hour of shouting at the thing reminded me of why I never use it.

Any video examples of the Beathawk sequencer being used to drive other apps? I’ve had a search but couldn’t find anything. Can you load the sequencer as multiple instances in AUM, or does it have to be set up as MIDI outs from Beathawk itself?
The step sequencer looks better than SPA, but SPA is nice and easy to load as an AU. Three times the price, mind...
Agreed. We need a sickly green AU recorder/player.
But of course!
At least it would match the sickly green hardly able to see text ApeMatrix has done to Rozeta lol
Why not give apeSoft a call? Sickly green is right up their alley!
C'mon - you know I love me some apeSoft. Couldn't resist....
I always wondered if it’s because they are on a different distance from the equator to myself and hence their sickly green is really purple?
Never got Beat hawk as a stepsequencer to work in aum. SPA was easy as pie or easy as Rozeta to hook it up. Just super convenient...
I’m getting that from the SPA vids, looks really usable, like Rozeta, and a nice accompaniment to the Brambos rhythm AU’s.
THIS.
(Don’t even have the slightest thought of regret buying SPAu)
BeatHawk goes on sale regularly and was even free at one point. SPA (the standalone version) never that I can see. I would grab SPA now.
@MonzoPro I feel like SPA is still your best bet. It's not going to tick every single box for you, but I think you'll still dig it more than the others you're contemplating.
Yeah, I think I’m there now. Funnily enough I remember Beathawk being free now, and I didn’t grab it due to the file size.
Thanks, I’ve ruled everything out now, so unless Brambos unveils a step sequencer for Rozeta overnight, I’ll be getting this in the morning.

I eagerly await your feedback!
ApeSoft Blue skin is alright by me.
and its red-ish. That last one is important if you're jamming out on a nuclear submarine and don't want to ruin your night vision.
OMG. I lost my shi% on this. LOL LOL. thanks for the laugh!!!
Ok pressed the button this morning and dived in for a 15 minute play. First impressions: really good, just what I was looking for. Hook two instances up to a couple of synths, chuck in Ruismaker, play a few notes on the keyboard for key changes and you’ve instantly got something listenable.
I’d like access to the full range of notes on screen, but I really like the no-fuss way I was able to get going within a few seconds with this one. Low CPU too. Think I’ll be using this a lot.
Yep it's really versatile, arp, drum sequencer, chord sequencer, CC modulator etc
For some reason my stomach churns every time I try and use BH, it sounds like its stomping on my soul, in a bad way... Maybe that red is ...... Satan!!
SPA has been great, would love to be able to tab between different instruments in one AU instance, maybe someday.
Have you got it working with the Ruismakers? Can't seem to get it to trigger those.
Haven't tried them yet, but I have with Vatanator.
It's a bit fiddly finding the correct trigger notes on the lanes. But once you do you can save a Ruismaker preset and re use it.
