Hey @JesperNordin & @j_liljedahl beta tester, huge fan and blown away with your incredible app :)

I am curious as to how you put the Beethoven info into GP?
Can we import our own midi files to manipulate?

Yes, the app can use a portion of a MIDI file as a scale. Just put your MIDI file into GP using iTunes File Sharing or the iOS Files app, or "open in" from AudioShare etc. It will then show up in the Scales list in the Scale Editor, where you can select the region of the file to use.

Yeah I thought it was the case you could import midi files or scale files by putting them in the Files GP folder but they don't show up in the app, for me anyway :)

Ok, I opened in from Scalegen and that worked

Make sure they end with ".mid" and it should work regardless of where it comes from.

How can i import .exs files from my Laptop to my iPad with gestrument pro?
I tried to use i tunes filesharing. I copied the exs files with iTunes to gestrument. But where do i find them inside gestrument? I can’t find anything for importing files. And they are not listed in „Sounds“. Thanks!

Very sorry, but even though I said previously that one can import EXS files it turns out that I had forgotten that we never got that working for user imported sounds, only the factory ones (where most of them are EXS). SF2 works fine, though.

Yeah I think I tried a scala file first instead. Mid works great :)

Scala files work as well, make sure they end with ".scl".

So how long maximum can these midi file portions be ?
Trying to get my head around how these imported midi files interact.
    For EG:
say I have a 1 minute midi file with melodic content, and rhythmic pauses in the melody etc.
Can this midi file be imported and the phrasing, notes, and rhythmic performance from the midi file is available to interact with?
Or is GP just using the successive notes from the melody, and we are interacting with these melodic steps / and therefore nothing to do with the timing info of the midi file is used?

I would love to import sections of existing ideas (midi files) - and re interact with the rhythmic and melodic content that is in the original midi performance to expand upon the ideas in GP.
Breaking a musical idea into portions of midi files, then have these multiple ideas all interacting on the playing surface, and spitting out new midi data.
Also - perform on GP / record midi output - then re import sections of that performance, and interact again.

Really looking forward to indepth video tutorials.

  • Any chance for a collapsible parameter section? I love getting my kids involved and the more screen real estate to make sounds the easier it is to keep their attention.

  • Does Guestrument Pro negate the need for ScaleGen?

@Artefact2001 We had a free beta software to translate Kinect data to Midi CC on our old website for many years. We are working on a new version, since the old was a big buggy - but if you want to try it I can send you the old version - email me at [email protected]

Otherwise you can wait and we are planning to do something quite interesting in this area;-)

I am very much looking forward to this. Any plans to include data input via the leapmotion (it‘s nice and small to transport, compared to kinect...)?
Cheers and thank you for this great App!

  • @Mayo - for now Gestrument Pro only imports midid files as a series of pitches to use as a scale. But we have many thought, ideas and plans for this area - stay tuned!

  • @kobamoto said:

You could probably come up with a good method for creating custom scales in midi, then importing them as scale maps, but ScaleGen is still the quickest way to build them just the way you want it without a lot of fuss, so it's staying on my iPad.

  • thanks Aaron

  • @kobamoto @aaronpc - yes that's correct. Actually we think that the scale editor in Gestrument Pro is way better at its core, but it still lacks some functionality that we have in ScaleGen. Hopefully we can either bring that functionality to Gestrument Pro, or update ScaleGen with the new updated version of the scale editor.

  • @rezidue - do you mean in the Instrument settings? We have talked about different ways of simplifying both them and the lists of presets, scales and so on. Hopefully we can do it in future updates.

For Scale import, it uses the successive sequence of notes. Scales has no timing or rhythmic information. We have plans for additional ways to interact with MIDI files for the future, including using both melodic and rhythmic information from the file.

You can hide the sliders etc, just tap the slider toggle at the top left. The instrument editor panels is closed by either long-pressing the instrument tab again, or tap the X button in the editor panel title bar.

What is the maximum amount of successive notes we can import from a midi file?

Currently 1024, which is the maximum number of pitches in a Scale regardless of where it comes from.

Hi! Thank you for gestrument pro it blows my mind!
I apologize if it has already been asked, is possible to arpeggiate with different notes in scale with the pattern generator? Something like +1 +3 +x like steppolyarp besides velocity and probability?

Currently not, an arpeggiator/pitch-pattern generator is coming in a future update.

amazing, can't wait to find out what's else is in store for this amazing app!

ps — how do I hook up a kinect?! (2:12)

Thanks. This is the video I needed to see its potential.

What CC messages can be sent? I have identified the modulation on channel 1, the pan on channel 10, the volume on channel 7 and the custom one on channel defined. Any other?

It's CC numbers, not channels. But yes, those are the four CC that can be sent per instrument. We will also add a toggle to make the sliders and cursors send their corresponding CCs as well (currently they only receive).

    Really nice presentation. Well done.

  • Is this app universal?! Can I download it to my work iPhone and then to my iPad?

Thanks for the info...what an amazing app !!

You can just look in the App Store to find out :) But yes, it's universal.

Guess I should use the app for longer than 15 minutes before asking questions! Thank you. Had some fun last night.

  • After digging a little more into Gestrument Pro, I must say it's an impressive instrument, a totally new way to make music.

  • @j_liljedahl - any plans to be able to share presets?
It would be really great to see how others interact , and general sharing of info/tricks
